BJP president Amit Shah meets President-elect Ram Nath Kovind; PM Modi expected to arrive soon. Kovind was elected India's next President today. The NDA-backed
candidate, a Dalit leader, won nearly 66 per cent of the votes cast by
an electoral college of MPs and MLAs. He will be
sworn in on July 25.
Immediately after the results were announced, the 71-year-old addressed the media in an emotional, but short speech among the noise of celebratory firecrackers and sweets, at his home.
"This is an emotional moment for me today. Rashtrapati pad par mera chayan Bhartiya loktantra ki mahaanta ka prateek hai. Choosing me for the President is a symbol of the greatness of Indian democracy," Kovind said.
