In a major move, the Supreme Court has ordered a CBI probe into 62 cases of extra judicial killings in Manipur. The CBI will have to submit an investigation compliance report by January 2018.

The killings are allegedly by the Army, Assam Rifles and the Manipur Police in the state hit by decades of insurgency.

The Indian government has defended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) at a United Nation's forum. Manipur civil rights bodies have documented the deaths of 1,528 men, women, and children believed to be victims of fake encounters.

Irom Sharmila, who ended the world's longest fast, which ran for 16 years, last year, against AFSPA, got married yesterday. A fitting wedding present.
