Large parts of Kaziranga National Park in Assam have been inundated due to incessant rain. More than 50 per cent of the area has been submerged with elephants, rhinos and deer migrating to the upper reaches of the park at Karbi Hills. However, as this image shows, many animals were caught in the floodwaters with little chances of  escape. In fact, ANI reports that the flood level is expected to rise.

M Das, Assistant Conservator, Kaziranga National Park said many animals were dead, with some killed by speeding vehicles on the National Highway 37, which passes through the Park.

Forest guards have started patrolling the area in boats for fear that poachers would seize the opportunity and cull the stranded animals.

Till now, the flood has inundated more than 20 districts of the state. The death toll in the current floods rose to 32 after seven more people were killed on Monday. The Brahmaputra continued to flow above the red mark throughout the state for the fourth consecutive day.  -- Agencies
