Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan turned 72 on Wednesday, July 5, and his birthday was celebrated as a gala affair in his Delhi bungalow with the who's who of New Delhi turning up.

President Pranab Mukherjee was there as was Vice President Hamid Ansari. Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent him a birthday card from Tel Aviv.

But the most interesting guest was Ram Nath Kovind, the BJP's presidential candidate. Paswan told him that he was lucky to be greeted on his birthday by the sitting President as well as the incoming one.

Chirag Paswan, the MP from Jamui, put together his father's birthday bash with meticulous care. President Mukherjee remembered the time when Paswan entered Parliament for the first time, in 1977 from Hajipur, remarking then that he was very young. Paswan was all of 31 then. Now you are the treasure of Bihar, Pranab said, and wished Paswan many more birthdays to come.

Paswan told Pranab that he considers the President his elder brother, and thanked him profusely for all his guidance in parliamentary procedures and practices.
