23:50   Trump signs executive orders seeking to revive controversial oil pipelines
US President Trump signed executive orders Tuesday clearing the way for the controversial Dakota Access and Keystone XL oil pipelines to move forward, another step in Trumps effort to dismantle former President Obamas environmental legacy.

He also signed an executive order to expedite environmental reviews of other infrastructure projects, lamenting the existing incredibly cumbersome, long, horrible permitting process.

The regulatory process in this country has become a tangled up mess, he said.

It remained unclear how Trumps order would restart the pipeline projects or expedite environmental reviews. Many of those reviews are statutory and the legislation that created them cannot be swept aside by an executive order.  The White House did not immediately release texts of the orders.

22:49   RBI may not relax cash withdrawal limit for 3 weeks to a month
Your weekly cash withdrawal limit of Rs 24,000 is likely to continue for another three weeks to a month before the Reserve Bank of India finally decides to relax the cap.

The central bank, however, could double the daily withdrawal limit at the ATMs after a detailed analysis of transaction patterns and payment modes, sources said.

The RBI has increased the withdrawal limit at the ATMs thrice since the announcement of the demonetisation of bank notes of Rs 500 and 1000 denominations on November 8. But the weekly limit has been maintained at Rs 24,000.

Sources said that the central bank may increase the withdrawal limit from the ATMs to align it with the weekly cap of Rs 24,000. The move aimed at taking pressure off the banks.

22:13   RBI gave thumbs-up to design of Rs 500,Rs 2000 notes in May
The design of new banknotes of Rs 500 and Rs 2000 denominations was approved at the May 19, 2016 meeting of the Central Board of RBI, an RTI query has revealed.

In his application, Mumbai-based activist Jeetendra Ghadge had sought the exact date of the approval of the design of new bills.

"The new design of the bank notes was approved by the Central Board of Reserve Bank of India in its meeting held on May 19, 2016," the Central Public Information Officer of RBI stated in the response.

RBI cited section 8(1)(a) of RTI Act to refuse information to Ghadge who had sought to know exact date of the first meeting held at the apex bank with the agenda to print new currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2000 denominations, and the exact date for the order allowing their printing.

Ghadge today said the RBI and its Governor need to come clean on the entire processes of demonetisation "so that responsibility could be fixed and the common people's trust is maintained."

20:28   'Home Boys vs Outsider Modi': The pitch for Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav
The Congress has a sales pitch for Uttar Pradesh: "Apne ladkey, baahri Modi (Home Boys vs Outsider Modi)". The tagline offers Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Congress boss Rahul Gandhi as a package deal against the PM, who represents Varanasi in Parliament.

Congress sources said that the catchphrase has been offered for review to Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party after they finalised their alliance over the weekend. The symbiosis is based on the calculation that together, the parties stand a good chance of accruing the support of the Muslims, who constitute a formidable 18 per cent of the population and have traditionally voted for either the Congress or the Samajwadi Party.

20:03   Why Modi picked Abu Dhabi prince as R-Day chief guest
Rajeev Sharma tells us: Diplomatic symbolism reveals how Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan is head and shoulders above most foreign dignitaries, except perhaps the United States president.

One, Prime Minister Narendra Modi breached protocol for the second successive year and received the crown prince at the airport in New Delhi on Tuesday afternoon.

Two, Sheikh Mohammed was chosen over two important leaders as the chief guest for this year's Republic Day parade -- Justin Trudeau, Canada's prime minister, and Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh's prime minister.

Indian prime ministers have rarely received foreign dignitaries at the airport, with a few exceptions like the US president and the king of Saudi Arabia.

Modi personally chose Sheikh Mohammed as the chief guest for the Republic Day parade. His prime reason is economic as the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority has over $750 billion sovereign funds to invest.

Abu Dhabi's August 2015 pledge of investing $75 billion in Indian infrastructure will top Modi's agenda when he holds delegation-level talks with the crown prince on Wednesday afternoon.

Sheikh Mohammed returns home on January 26 evening.

18:16   Congress names Priyanka as 'star campaigner' for UP polls
After having played a key role in sealing a deal with the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been announced as one of the star campaigners of the Congress for the upcoming assembly elections.

Priyankas name figures in the list of 40 star campaigners and it is expected that she would play a prominent role in the elections.

With the alliance almost seeing a deadlock, it was saved by the last minute intervention of Priyanka with the Congress settling with 105 seats and the Samajwadi Party with 298 seats.

Besides Priyanka, the other star campaigners include Sonia Gandhi, former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh, former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, Congress general secretary Ahmed Patel and senior Congress leaders Raj Babbar, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Pramod Tiwari, Randeep Surjewala, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Manish Tewari.

Earlier, it was reported that she will not campaign beyond Rae Bareli and Amethi, but her name figuring in the star campaigners' list fuels speculations that she might get a larger role in the campaigning. -- ANI

18:06   Will withdraw 2016 notification on Jallikattu: Centre to SC
The Centre today told the Supreme Court that it would withdraw its 2016 notification allowing bull taming sport Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu in view of the fresh legislation, passed by the state assembly, on the issue.

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told a bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra that the Centre has decided to withdraw the January 6, 2016 notification issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forest allowing the sport.

The court, which had reserved its verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the notification, said the concerned bench would take a decision on when the application of the Centre would come up for its consideration.

The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment), Act, 2017 piloted by Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, was yesterday adopted unanimously by a voice vote in the assembly after a brief debate. The Bill would now be sent for approval to the President.

Nearly 70 caveats have been filed in the Supreme Court seeking prior hearing if pleas challenging the new legislation allowing Jallikattu in the state come up for consideration.

17:33   Digvijay alleges flight he took was low on fuel; airline says no
A Goa-bound SpiceJet plane from New Delhi, which had Digvijay Singh among the passengers, was diverted to Mumbai inviting sharp reactions from the senior Congress leader who alleged the flight was 'low on fuel' and he would think twice before taking the airline in future.

However, the airline denied the Congress leader's allegation of inadequate fuel in the aircraft and said the flight was diverted to Mumbai only due to congestion at the Goa airport runway.

'Spice Jet SG 141 Delhi to Goa diverted to Mumbai for lack of fuel because of air traffic congestion in Goa. Heard for the first time (sic),' Singh said in a tweet.

'Would think twice to take Spice Jet next time!' he said in another tweet.

SpiceJet flight SG-141 Delhi-Goa was diverted to Mumbai due to air traffic congestion in Goa, the airline's spokesperson Tushar Srivastava said in a statement.

"The flight had adequate holding fuel and held overhead Goa airport for some time before being diverted to Mumbai," he said.

17:04   Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan living separately: Amar Singh
India Today reports: Politician Amar Singh was a close friend of Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, until their fallout a few years ago. Amitabh Bachchan had earlier remarked, "He is a friend, he has the right to say what he wants to say," when Amar Singh claimed that Big B warned him not to accept Jaya as a member of the Samajwadi Party. However, his latest remark may not go down too well with the superstar.

Amar Singh has claimed that Amitabh and Jaya live separately, and also hinted at a rift between Jaya and bahu Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. ABP Majha quoted the Rajya Sabha MP as saying that the media believes him to be responsible for every rift, whether it concerns the Samajwadi Party, the Ambanis or the Bachchans.

He said, "Even before I met Amitabh Bachchan, he and Jaya Bachchan were living separately. One of them was living in Pratiksha and the other lived in his other bungalow Janak. There were also speculations about a problem between Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Jaya. I am not responsible for that."
Amar Singh has earlier gone on record to say that it was Amitabh's decision not to stay friends with him.

15:52   When a BJP neta compared SRK with Dawood
BJP National General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya not very well known for his finesse strikes again. The target -- Shah Rukh Khan.

Reacting to the the incident where a person died and two policemen suffered injuries as the crowd went berserk wanting to get a glimpse of the Bollywood superstar at Vadodara railway station, Vijayvargiya compared Shah Rukh with fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

"If Dawood Ibrahim comes on street, there would be crowd to see him...you can't gauge the popularity on the basis of crowd," the top BJP leader said.
I will not comment further... people have understood what it means," Vijayvargiya added.

The leaders rant come just days after he posted a poster of him on Twitter hitting out at Shah Rukh Khan's soon to be released film Raees.

"The Raees that couldn't be of its own country is of no good. On another side we should support Kaabil that is patriotic," he said without naming Shah Rukh.

Shah Rukh's Raees and Hrithik Roshan's Kaabil are slated to be released on the same day - January 25.

15:16   UK govt loses Brexit case, parliamentary nod required now
The UK government loses Brexit Article 50 case as Supreme Court dismisses its appeal. The UK Supreme Court ruling means the government requires parliamentary assent to start the Brexit process, reports the BBC.

Its decision is one of the most important constitutional cases in British legal history.

The Supreme Court had ruled on whether or not Prime Minister Theresa May had the right to trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty to begin the process of leaving the European Union, or whether she must first obtain the consent of the British parliament.

In November, the British High Court ruled that the prime minister could not start the process of leaving the EU without first getting the consent of parliament.

Priyanka Gandhi to campaign only in Amethi and Rae Bareli. She will not go for any extensive campaigning in UP, reports NDTV.

Belying reports that Priyanka would in fact be taking on a much larger role in the upcoming UP elections, she will now restrict her campaign trail to the Gandhi bastions of Amethi (Rahul Gandhi) and Rae Bareli (Sonia Gandhi).

Priyanka has been managing the twin constituencies in the run up to every election campaign since 1999. Party sources feel that Rae Bareli, represented by Indira Gandhi, will be the ideal launch pad for Priyanka in 2019.

14:56   Narendra Modi is pulling India back to the 1970s
"Our problem is that there is too much democracy in India -- that's why difficult decisions never get taken,' declared Sunil Alagh, marketing consultant and supporter of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The bon vivant was responding to the uproar over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's shock decision to invalidate 86 percent of India's currency. Alagh's lament betrayed a longing oft expressed by the country's affluent and well heeled -- a craving for the precision and order of authoritarian leadership.

13:15   Has Mt Everest shrunk? Survey of India to measure height
The Survey of India would soon "re-measure" the height of Mount Everest to verify doubts expressed over it in some sections of the scientific community following the major earthquake in Nepal two years ago and to help scientific studies, Surveyor General of India Swarna Subba Rao has said.

"We are sending an expedition to Mount Everest. Its height was declared, if I remember correctly, in 1855. Many others also measured it. But the height given by Survey of India, even today, is taken as the correct height. It is 29,028 ft. We are re-measuring it.

"Two years have passed since the major Nepal earthquake. After that, there is a doubt in the scientific community that it is shrinking. That is one of the reasons. Second reason is, it helps in scientific studies, (tectonic) plate movements etc," he said.

All the necessary approvals have been obtained for the expedition and the effort should begin in a month, he said on the sidelines of a meeting of Geospatial World Forum in Hyderabad.

12:44   Kamal Haasan: Jallikattu protests felt right
Tamil actor Kamal Haasan holds forth on Jallikattu.

In a press conference in Chennai today, the actor said he wants "a reasonable explanation" for the alleged police violence against peaceful pro-Jallikattu protesters in Chennai yesterday.

The actor, who doesn't support the ban on jallikattu, also said the protests in Tamil Nadu are a culmination of Tamilians wanting a bill to allow the bull-taming sport for the last 20 years. "This ban is intruding on Tamil culture," he said.

The actor was only half joking when he said he hoped "the cops in the video weren't real". He was referring to photographs and videos of police personnel torching auto rickshaws on the streets."I hope there is an explanation on the clips of cops committing arson. No law or legal system is infallible," Haasan said, adding that he is against bans of any kind as a matter of principle.

12:39   Swamy demands President's rule in TN
BJP MP Subramanian Swamy on Monday demanded President's rule in Tamil Nadu to redeem the state from the "Naxals, Jehadis and Porkis', after the protests over Jallikattu at Marina Beach in Chennai turned violent.

In the tweet, he contradicted his earlier position where he asked for Sasikala Natarajan to be made the Chief Minister of the state in place of incumbent O. Panneerselvam.

"Sasikala should take over. NRH Natarajan be kept far away from power. Panneer (O. Panneerselvam) is a good man but the road to hell is paved with good intentions,' Swamy, a Tamil himself, had tweeted earlier.

"President's Rule necessary. CRPF, BSF and Army must be mobilised for strike. It is now or never to recover TN from Naxals & Jehadis & Porkis,' Swamy wrote in Twitter.

Genuine agitators have dispersed. The main organiser said he is leaving Marina. Today there are people with Prabhakarans and Hafiz Sayeeds posters. This is now an ISI-financed agitation, Swamy said.

10:57   Jallikattu effect: K'taka wants Centre to lift ban on buffalo races
The domino effect has begun.

After the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Monday unanimously passed an amendment bill for conducting the bull-taming sport of Jallikattu, the Karnataka government is pressuring the Centre to revoke its ban on the traditional kambala or water buffalo race.

Replacing an ordinance promulgated two days ago to allow jallikattu, the Bill to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 was unanimously adopted by the House after members of all parties spoke welcoming the legislative initiative.

Karnataka Chief minister Siddaramaiah on Monday said the state government was in favour of kambala, and sought the Centre's support just as it has supported jallikattu in Tamil Nadu.

10:36   'Budget won't influence voters' minds'
Coming out in support of the Supreme Court's order which dismissed a plea seeking postponement of Union Budget presentation ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in five states, former home secretary and BJP MP RK Singh on Tuesday said it won't influence the voters' minds either way.

Singh told ANI that the apex court's decision indicates the government's stand.

"The situation is such that state polls now keep happening. If you start postponing constitutional functions because of the polls then you will probably not be able to perform your constitutional functions on time," he added.

Singh further stated that the state polls are decided on the basis of specific issues where the Union Budget is for the entire country.

"Therefore, it is not that Union Budget will sort of influence the voters' minds this way or that way. So, I believe that this order is right," he added.

The Election Commission yesterday ordered that no state specific schemes shall be announced in national budget in the interest of free and fair elections. It may be ensured that in the budget speech the government's achievements in respect of five poll-bound states will not be highlighted.

09:31   Delhi fog plays havoc with flights, trains
As dense fog continues to engulf northern India due to the fall in temperature, several trains and flight services have been affected on Tuesday morning.

As many as 25 trains are running late, 9 have been rescheduled and one is cancelled due to prevailing fog conditions in the national capital. Flight services were also affected, with 11 international and nine domestic flights getting delayed and one being cancelled.

The continuous fog has been disrupting train and flight services since more than a month.

The meteorological department earlier said the temperature in the national capital will hover between five and seven degrees for the next two to three days.

09:14   Trump's White House to have 'Skype seats' in its press briefing room
The Trump administration has announced to have four 'Skype seats' inside the press briefing room at the White House, which will give access to journalists outside the national capital.
"Beginning later this week, I'm excited to announce that we're going to have four -- what we call Skype seats, live here in the briefing room," the White House Press Secretary Sean Spicertold reporters at his maiden news conference on Monday.

He said it will aid those who do not have necessary security clearance to enter White House.
"This will open up the briefing to journalists who live beyond 50 miles of the Washington DC area and to organisations that don't currently have a hard pass," he said.
As always, any organisation is welcome to apply for a day pass. "But we're excited to open up into the field and fold here, a diverse group of journalists from around the country, who may not have the convenience or funding to travel to Washington," he said.
"I think this can benefit us all by giving a platform to voices that are not necessarily based here in the belt way," Spicer said.
This is the first time that the White House is having Skype seats inside the White House press briefing room. The previous Obama Administration was a frequent user of Twitter, and Facebook as part of its outreach to the press.

08:41   No schemes for poll-bound states in budget: EC
After the Supreme Court turned down a plea seeking to restrain the government from presenting Union Budget on February 1, the Election Commission also cleared the way for the government to stick to its plan but forbade it from announcing any schemes specific to the poll-bound states "which may have the effect of influencing the electors...in favour of the ruling party".

While a bench of Chief Justice JS Khehar and Justices NV Ramana and DY Chandrachud said that there was nothing wrong if the Union Budget was presented as it might not amount to violation of the mode code of conduct, the EC in a letter sent to the Cabinet Secretary late on Monday evening opined that announcing state-specific schemes or highlighting government's achievements in respect of the five states in the budget speech would disturb the level-playing field.

"The commission hereby directs that in the interest of free and fair elections and in order to maintain level playing field during elections, no state-specific schemes shall be announced in the national budget which may have the effect of influencing the electors of the five poll-going states in favour of the ruling party. It may be ensured that in the Budget speech, the government's achievements in respect of the said five states will also not be highlighted in any manner," stated the EC.

00:02   Army's para commandos to miss out on R-Day parade
Despite all the hype around surgical strikes carried out in Myanmar and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir by the elite Para Commandos, the Indian Army has decided not to showcase these heroes at Rajpath during the 68th Republic Day.

Their space has been given to the Black Cat Commandos of the National Security Guard, who would be making their debut this year at the parade.

This year, the NSG Commandos would be participating for the first time. Para Commandos were there last year and could come back next Republic Day.
