20:39   Jallikattu success sparks demand for lifting ban on Karnataka buffalo race
With the decks getting cleared for the bull taming festival of Jallikattu in neighbouring Tamil Nadu, there is a growing chorus for organising Kambala, a traditional annual buffalo race in marshy fields, held in the coastal districts of Karnataka.

Spurred by the Jallikattu agitation in Tamil Nadu, Kambala Committees have decided to meet in Mangaluru tomorrow to strategise their agitation.

"By coming Wednesday or Thursday we are also planning an agitation in this region. By organising a large-scale agitation in Mangaluru we want to attract the attention of  politicians and the whole nation."

"Kambala lovers from Udupi and Mangaluru regions and 150-200 pairs of buffaloes will participate in it," Kamabala Committee President Ashok Rai said.

He said 'when Jallikattu has got permission, Kambala should also get it, because no violence is involved in it. It is part of our cultural heritage'.

Karnataka high court's division bench, headed by Chief Justice S K Mukherjee in an interim order in November 2016 had stayed holding of Kambala on a petition by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals challenging it in view of orders passed by the Supreme Court on Jallikattu.

Kambala Committees have filed an interim application, seeking vacation of the stay.

20:24   Kerala Guv's doubts delayed Jallikattu ordinance by a few hours
The ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Saturday evening tweeted that Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao has approved the Jallikattu ordinance, but deleted the tweet after sometime.

Heres the reason.

Kerala Governor and former Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam had telephoned Rao that there are a few clauses in the ordinance which are wrongly stated and may entail legal impediments, a Thiruvananthapuram Raj Bhavan source said.

Consequently, Rao talked to Delhi and even the Prime Ministers Office was in doubt for sometime.

However, later it was clarified to Rao by the government that the apprehensions of the Kerala governor were wrong.

Once a clarification was provided, Rao signed the ordinance.

Hence, there was a delay of a few hours in signing of the ordinance. R Rajagopalan

14:27   6 CPI-M workers arrested for BJP man's murder in Kannur
Six Communist Party of India-Marxit workers were arrested today in connection with hacking to death of a Bharatiya Janata Party worker at Andaloor in nearby Dharmadam a few days ago.

Police said the accused, aged between 25-31, were Marxist party workers and sympathisers hailing from Andaloor, from were the victim also belonged.

While the CPI-M leaders had earlier claimed that the attack on 53-year-old Santosh was a fallout of a property dispute between his relatives, police said it was due to some political rivalry.

The incident was said to be in retaliation to the attack by alleged Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh workers on some Student Federation of India students who had gone on an excursion earlier.

Santosh was attacked inside his house and had 21 injuries, mostly on hands and legs. His wife and children were away at the time of the incident on January 18 at around 11 pm.

12:16   SP faked rift; minorities must vote for BSP to check BJP: Maya
Once again asking the minorities to vote for her party, Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati has said that this is the only way to check the Bharatiya Janata Party in the upcoming state elections.

Targeting the Samajwadi Party, she said Mulayam Singh Yadav made his brother Shivpal a scapegoat to divert attention from son Akhilesh's 'failures'.

She also said that the rift in SP was faked by Mulayam and Akhilesh.

Taking a dig at the hiccups in SP-Congress alliance, she said both the parties are like sinking boats.

"The Congress and S P are sinking boats. It is difficult for the SP to return to power," she said in Lucknow.

The BSP supremo said the news of alliance has exposed selfish motive of the Congress.

Mayawati reiterated that the people of UP would not vote for the SP and that she will ensure that victory is marked by the BSP in the elections.

Taking a jibe at the two factions of the Samajwadi Party, Mayawati said the groups will lead to the defeat of each other.

Meanwhile, Mulayam loyalist SP leader Ambika Chaudhary joined the BSP in Mayawati's presence on Saturday.

11:38   Nitish, Lalu, Rabri to join 'world's longest human chain' in support of liquor ban
Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Yadav, his wife and former CM Rabri Devi and their two sons -- Deputy Chief Minister Tejaswi Yadav and health minister Tej Pratap Yadav -- will join the human chain at Gandhi Maidan in Patna, in support of prohibition today.

People of Bihar will form the 'world's longest human chain' to support liquor ban in the state on Saturday. A team from the Limca Book of Records has already arrived in Patna to take note of the world record set to be made.

Five satellites, Indian and foreign, will capture the unique spectacle of men, women and children of all age holding hands for a cause. Besides, four trainer aircraft, two helicopters and over 40 drones will also capture the images of the human chain.

Nearly 2 crore people, including school and college students, will join hands across the state from 12.15 pm to 1 pm.

The state government has already engaged its entire machinery in preparation for the worlds longest human chain, which will spread across 11,292 km in the state to demonstrate public support for prohibition. It will probably be first of its kind event in the country.

"The proposed human chain will be from east to west and from north to south Bihar that will cover all panchayats, blocks and districts," officials said.

The Nitish Kumar government had imposed a total ban on liquor in the state on April 5 last year. Since then, more than 16,000 people have been arrested on charges of either consuming or transporting liquor in the state.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has also decided to join the human chain after Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Kumar for imposing prohibition in Bihar.

Later, BJP's ally Lok Janshakti Party of Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan also announced to join it. From M I Khan in Patna

09:49   Trump gives Oval Office a makeover, reinstalls Churchill bust
US President Donald Trump has given a makeover to the Oval Office withing hours of moving in to the White House as he reinstalled a bust of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and introduced some other changes.

The bust was removed to outside the Treaty Room in the private residence of the White House from the Oval Office in 2009 under Trump's predecessor Barack Obama.

Trump, however, has retained the bust of Martin Luther King Jr, brought to the Oval Office by Obama.

Inside the Oval Office, Trump is also using the famous Resolute desk, an 1,880 gift from Queen Victoria and first used in the Oval by John F Kennedy. It is now being used by its Seventh President.

According to a White House pool report, the drapes in the Oval Office have been replaced. This morning they were crimson. Now they are gold.

Additionally, a bust of Teddy Roosevelt is in one of the bookshelves. Some of the artwork have also been swapped.

According to a CNN report, some paintings have also been replaced by Trump, including two by the door by Edward Hopper.

08:31   Bank employees to go on strike on February 7
Bank staff and employees unions have given call to strike work on February 7 to highlight problems faced by them while implementing demonetisation and seeking an effective mechanism of recovery of huge bad loans.

C H Venkatachalam, general secretary, All India Bank Employees Association said in a statement: Everyone is appreciating the hard work done by the bank employees, officers and managers in managing the situation in the banks so well after November 8. But, there is reluctance and hesitation to extend proper compensation and overtime for the long extra hours of additional work done. This is totally unacceptable.

Banking sector employees will hold a dharna at Reserve Bank of India offices on February 2, followed by a mass demonstration on February 7.

Besides AIBEA, the All India Bank Officers Association and the Bank Employees Federation of India are taking part in the strike. Unions said they have been pursuing these issues -- demonetisation and action against big defaulters -- with the Indian Banks Association but with no result.  Hence it was felt necessary to resort to agitation.

08:08   In first executive order, Trump asks agencies to ease Obamacare
US President Donald Trump signed his first executive order, heading into the Oval Office shortly after his inaugural parade to direct agencies to ease regulations associated with Obamacare, the signature healthcare law of his predecessor that Trump has vowed to replace.

The White House also directed an immediate regulatory freeze for all government agencies in a memo from Trump's chief of staff, Reince Priebus, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said.

The White House did not immediately provide details about what the executive order or memo entailed.

Repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act was a central pledge for Trump during the presidential election campaign, although Republicans in the US Congress have not yet laid out a plan to replace the insurance program.

04:23   US Senate confirms retired Gen Mattis as defence secretary
The Senate confirmed President Donald Trump's first Cabinet member Friday, formally approving his defence secretary.

As the Senate voted on retired Gen James Mattis for defence secretary, he easily cleared the 50-vote majority threshold. New York Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand was the first and so far only senator to vote against him.

The Senate was set to vote next on retired Gen John Kelly for homeland security secretary.

The Senate was not expected to consider Kansas Republican Mike Pompeo for CIA director until Monday, after at least three Democrats objected to his quick confirmation over concerns including surveillance, though a deal was possible to allow the vote to proceed Friday.

One seeks the immediate release of Trump's full tax returns and has garnered more than 6,000 signatures as of about 4:30 pm ET.

The other petition, which has far fewer signatures, asks the President to "divest his financial and business holdings or have them administered by a truly blind trust."

03:10   Wall Street ends higher as Trump takes office
Reuters reports: US stocks closed higher on Friday in a modest but broad-based advance as Donald Trump was sworn in as President, marking the first time in more than 50 years that a new commander-in-chief has been welcomed by a rising equity market on his first day in office.

In his speech, Trump said US policy will be to buy American and hire American, reiterating what he had said many times during this campaign for the White House.

Some investors said the comments reinforced concerns about potential protectionist trade policies. Indexes pared gains during his speech and ended off the highest levels of the day.

02:52   Inaugural parade begins in Washington
Associated Press reports: Military bands representing all the service branches are playing and marching outside the Capitol, signaling the start of the inaugural parade.

Police officers on motorcycles are following closely behind as the parade participants begin the slow trek down Constitution Avenue.

Hundreds of police officers have lined both sides of the street. Service members are also standing at attention on both sides.

There are only a few onlookers along the first couple of blocks but the crowds appear to grow as the parade approaches the National Mall.

02:23   Trump, Pence head for inaugural parade
The inaugural parade is now beginning, albeit a bit late.

Earlier, Trump, speaking at the luncheon, said he was honored when he heard the former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State (and former campaign rival) Hillary Clinton were coming, and he encouraged the crowd to give a standing ovation for the Clintons.

"There is nothing more I can say because I have a lot of respect for those two people," he said.

Contrast that with some of his rhetoric during the campaign.

Back then, Trump repeatedly said Hillary Clinton deserved to be in jail because of her private email server issues. And Trump invited women who had accused Bill Clinton of sexual assault to sit in the audience of one of the presidential debates.

01:21   Trump's inauguration drew fewer crowd than Obama's
A side-by-side comparison of the crowds at former President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump's respective inaugurations reveals that Trump's crowd isn't as large as he boasted it would be.

Two aerial photographs of the National Mall from the two historic days reveal large patches of white ground exposed during Trump's ceremony, spaces crowds had filled during Obama's 2009 inauguration. The pictures were taken around the same time during the day, Trump's at 11:04 am and Obama's at 11:30 am.

Federal and local agencies estimated 700,000 to 900,000 people would be in Washington, DC for Trump's inauguration on Friday, roughly half the number of people who attended Obamas first presidential inauguration. Obama's second inauguration also drew more people, approximately 1 million.
