Congress's decimation in the Maharashtra local body polls in many ways reflects its steady erosion in national politics as well. The Congress (22) is a poor #3 in the BMC polls, which it had ruled till 1995. The party chief Mumbai, Sanjay Nirupam, has offered to quit. Nirupam, a former Shiv Sainik has never been able to elevate the fortunes of the party in the city. Before him, Gurdas Kamath, who was Cong chief,  resigned from the party citing differences with Nirupam.
