Elections to the cash-rich BMC and nine other civic bodies in Maharashtra, which have virtually turned into a battle of prestige for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, heading the state's first BJP-led government, and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, have begun today.

For the first time, BMC election is witnessing a fight between Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena, other parties that fighting along are Congress, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Nationalist Congress Party. BJP and Shiv Sena are at the forefront of the battle, while the other 3 parties are suffering reverses.

Shiv Sena entered into an alliance with BJP for the first time in 1989 and thereafter became a coalition partner with NDA since 1998, but lately, the foundation of this alliance has developed cracks.

In Mumbai, a total 2,275 candidates are in fray for the 227 seats. 92 lakh people are eligible to cast the vote in the megapolis.
