23:11   Exit polls failed to project victory margin for BJP in Gujarat
Almost all the exit polls werespot on in predicting Bharatiya Janata Party's victory in Gujarat but a majority of them were off the mark when it came to forecasting the victory margin for the saffron party.

Most of the exit polls had predicted over 110 seats for the party but it could only manage 99 seats in the 182-member assembly in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah.

In Himachal too, predictions by some exit polls that BJP will get in excess of 50 seats in the 68-member assembly were not accurate.

According to the final results by the Election Commission (EC), the BJP won 99 seats, securing a majority in the 182-member Gujarat assembly.

The Congress won 77 seats.

Almost all exit polls by various media houses had predicted over 110 seats for the BJP in Gujarat where the party has been ensconced in power for close to two decades now.

In the 2012 assembly polls, the BJP had won 115 seats, the Congress 61 and others six.

An exit poll by Today's Chanakya had given BJP 135 seats in Gujarat and predicted a measly 47 for the Congress, 14 less than the opposition party had in the current assembly.

However, the exit poll was correct in predicting a voteshare of 49 per cent for the BJP as according to the EC, the BJP's vote share stood at 49.1 per cent.  -- PTI

22:11   100% match in random vote count on EVMs and paper trail slips: EC official
There was a '100 per cent match' in the random vote count on electronic voting machines and paper trail slips carried out by the Election Commission in 182 Gujarat polling stations today, a senior official said.

The EC had said it would conduct random vote counts on EVMs and VVPAT slips in one polling station in each of the 182 assembly constituencies.

"There was a 100 per cent match in the results of the EVM and the slips produced by the paper trail machines," the official of the election machinery said.

The polling stations were decided through a draw of lots in which the candidates or their agents were also present.

The EC had decided to match the tally in select polling stations amid allegations that the EVMs were compromised to help the Bharatiya Janata Party.

On December 15, the Supreme Court had refused to entertain a plea of the Gujarat Congress seeking counting of at least 20 per cent of the paper trail slips manually along with votes cast in the EVMs in each constituency of the state.

It had said that the court cannot interfere unless the Election Commission of India's decision to restrict the EVM- VVPAT paper trail to one booth per constituency is proved 'arbitrary', 'illegal' or 'mala fide'.  -- PTI

21:47   Congress' performance in Gujarat morale boosting: Chidambaram
The Congress has given a morale boosting performance in Gujarat and the battle will now be for five states in 2018, senior party leader P Chidambaram said today.

In a series of tweets, Chidambaram congratulated the Bharatiya Janata Party for winning the assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh but said the Congress has returned a morale boosting performance in Gujarat under Rahul Gandhi.

"The battle is now joined for five states in 2018," he said.

Assembly elections are due in Karnataka, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura and Mizoram in 2018.

The former finance and home minister said there is an electoral victory and there is a political victory in the results of the two states.

"Need I say who is the political victor in Gujarat. What a victory! In Gujarat, the winner limped across the finish line with a young sprinter close on his heels," he tweeted.

20:24   BJP wins Gujarat but loses in PM Modi's hometown
The Unjha constituency, under which Prime Minister Narendra Modi's hometown Vadnagar falls, today slipped out of the Bharatiya Janata Party's hands with the Congress winning the north Gujarat seat.
Congress' Ashaben Patel wrested the seat, falling in the Patidar-dominated Mehsana district, from BJP's five-term MLA Narayanbhai Patel.
Mehsana was the epicentre of the Patidar agitation, which flared up in 2015.
The BJP was trying to contain the damage in Unjha by playing up the fact that its local candidate heads the Umiya Dham Temple, which is revered by the Patel community, but it clearly came a cropper.
Ashaben defeated Narayanbhai by a margin of 19,529 votes. She bagged 81,797 votes as against the BJP candidate's 62,268 votes.
The 79-year-old BJP veteran had defeated Ashaben, 40, in the 2012 assembly election, winning the seat by a margin of over 24,000 votes.
Out of the total 2.12 lakh voters of Unjha, over 77,000 are Patidars, while around 50,000 belong to the Thakor community.
Both Modi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi had held poll rallies in Vadnagar.
Overall, in the Mehsana district, the BJP won five of the seven seats, with two going to the Congress.
Apart from Unjha, Congress bagged the Becharaji constituency while the Mahesana city, Kheralu, Visnagar, Kadi and Vijapur seats went to the BJP. -- PTI

20:07   What happened to 150+: Prakash Raj to PM
Multi-lingual actor Prakash Raj, who has been critical of the BJP, today lauded the saffron party for its win in the Gujarat polls but asked why it could not achieve its target of more than 150 seats.

Raj congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the BJP's victory but tweeted "Weren't you supposed to sweep with your VIKAAS? What happened to 150+..?."
He inquired whether Modi will pause for a moment to realise that "divisive politics" has not worked.
"Our country has bigger issues than Pakistan, religion, caste, supporting fringe groups that threaten... and the ego of settling personal scores. There are genuine rural issues," the actor said.
Saying that the "neglected voice" of the farmer, poor, and rural India just got louder, Raj sought to know from the prime minister whether he could hear that.
The actor had earlier questioned Modi's "silence" over the killing of senior journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh with whom he was closely associated.
He has also been criticising BJP and right wing outfits since then, inviting sharp attacks from them. -- PTI

19:15   This Congressman lost, but did not blame EVMs
As the ruling BJP today secured a majority in Gujarat, state Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki said his party accepts people's verdict and he takes responsibility for the defeat.

Solanki also expressed full faith in the Election Commission for "just and fair" polls, but urged it to take steps to remove the doubts raised over the functioning of the electronic voting machines (EVMs). "Being the state Congress president, I am taking the responsibility for the party's defeat," Solanki said.

He said the ruling BJP failed to meet its 150-plus target, and registered its lowest tally in 22 years. "We accept the verdict given by the people of Gujarat. We are grateful to the people for the kind of support they showed to the (the Congress's campaign of) 'Navsarjan Gujarat'," Solanki told reporters.

19:11   Historic to keep winning for so long: PM
Update on the PM's speech at the BJP party HQ:

"Thirty years back, the poison of caste was spread so badly in Gujarat that it took workers like me 30 years to get rid of it. In the last few months there were attempts again to sow seeds of casteism, but people rejected it, I congratulate them, but people must be alert.

"We took three decades to remove the poison of casteism from Gujarat. We took Gujarat on the path of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas'. Our party president played an instrumental role in our Vijay Yatra.

"Six crore Gujaratis are one and they want to move ahead on the path of progress. Let every Gujarati embrace one another, we cannot and won't be divided. Whatever happened, let that be forgotten... only think of unity and brotherhood."

18:53   My exit did not stop vikas in Gujarat: PM
The PM speaking at the BJP HQ in Delhi after the twin wins in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. Excerpts...

"Firstly I want to thank Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh's people for choosing the path of 'vikas'. Only by the 'vikas marg' will the standard of living improve.  Main Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh ki janta ko shat-shat naman karta hun ki unhone vikas ke marg ko chuna.

"Support for BJP shows the nation is ready for reform agenda and every citizen wants India transformed. The results in Himachal Pradesh show that if you don't do development and are embroiled in all wrong acts then after five years people will not accept you.

"Support for BJP shows the nation is ready for the reform agenda and every citizen wants India transformed. Recent elections results have proven that the country is ready for reform, is looking towards things that perform in a positive way and believes in transformation.

"Gujarat election results are historic. In this day and age, for a party to keep winning for so long... In Gujarat, BJP won all the seats it contested in 1989 Lok Sabha polls. We won most of the seats we contested in 1990. In 1995, in 1998, in 2002, in 2007 and in 2012 we won. We won most seats in Lok Sabha polls too.

"So many conspiracies were hatched in Gujarat by Congress, misinformation was being spread. People cannot bear if anyone makes fun of 'vikas'.

"After 2014, there is hunger for development. Even if you do not like BJP, do not try to derail the progress being made towards development.

"For me, Gujarat polls are a matter of double joy. I am so happy that after I left the state, my colleagues there continued the good work."

18:11   People want change from misgovernance in HP: Anurag Thakur
With the BJP set to wrest power from the Congress in Himachal Pradesh, party leader Anurag Thakur today said the people of the state wanted change because of a bad law-and-order situation and "misgovernance".

Thakur said that the announcement of Prem Kumar Dhumal as the BJP's chief ministerial candidate ahead of the election also helped the voters turn in favour of the saffron party.

However, Dhumal was defeated from the Sujanpur Assembly seat. "People wanted a change in Himachal Pradesh because the law-and-order situation was bad and also, there was misgovernance. The Congress was involved in corruption," he alleged.

Thakur, who is Dhumal's son, claimed that Himachal Pradesh had progressed well under the BJP governments in the past. "If you compare the two governments -- that of the Congress and of the BJP under the leadership of Dhumalji -- I think, there is a clear demarcation," he said.

The announcement of the BJP's chief ministerial candidate ahead of the polls worked in favour of the party, he said, adding that Himachal Pradesh was a small state and the people wanted to know who their leader would be if they needed to replace Congress Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

"That (naming the chief ministerial candidate) helped. You could see the change after the announcement," he said. Thakur is a Lok Sabha MP from the Hamirpur constituency in Himachal Pradesh. -- PTI

17:57   BJP's vote share falls 11% from 2014 polls
The BJP's vote share has slumped sharply since the 2014 Lok Sabha polls when it clocked nearly 60 per cent votes, while that of Congress has improved significantly -- still not good enough for the Rahul Gandhi- led party to win sufficient number of seats.

As per the results declared today by the Election Commission, the BJP has got close to 49.1 per cent votes, down from nearly 60 per cent in 2014 but somewhat higher than nearly 48 per cent it polled in the 2012 state assembly polls.

On the other hand, Congress' vote share has risen to about 41.4 per cent this time -- up from 33 per cent in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and also higher than around 39 per cent in the 2012 assembly polls.

The difference in vote share between the two parties works out to be around 7.7 per cent, in line with a shrinking gap witnessed since the 2007 assembly polls in the western state. In 2007, the BJP's vote share was 49.12 per cent as against 39.63 per cent of the Congress, the gap being 9.49 per cent. This gap further reduced to 9 per cent in 2012.

The gap was much wider at 10.4 per cent in the assembly polls held immediately after the 2002 riots, which is said to have sharply polarised the electorate. The difference in vote share was nearly 30 per cent in 2014, the year BJP stormed to power at the Centre riding a pan-India Narendra Modi wave and had won all seats from Gujarat.

After a complete rout in 2014, the Congress has improved its performance while its seat tally has also improved from the 2012 levels.

As per the results declared today, the independents have scored 4.3 per cent votes in Gujarat, while 1.8 per cent voters opted for NOTA (None of the above). No party other than Congress and the BJP could get even 1 per cent votes. -- PTI

17:38   Markets breathe easy after BJP noses ahead in Gujarat, HP
The stock market rallied 139 points today on prospects that the BJP is set to keep power in Gujarat and topple the Congress in Himachal Pradesh, but not before it got a big scare from counting of votes early on during the session.

The start was ominous as the benchmark Sensex crashed 867 points to go below the psychological 33,000 while the NSE Nifty plunged 258 points within one hour of counting of votes that showed both the parties were locked in a tight race. But then, the tide turned as the BJP started to take lead in a majority of seats.

"It is a temporary and face-saving win, but it shows a moral defeat for BJP. Gujarat voted against atrocities, anxiety and injustice caused to the common people. Gujarat belled the cat for 2019," Banerjee tweeted.

17:18   Guj poll results won't have bearing on K'taka polls: CM
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today said the results of the Gujarat Assembly polls would not have any impact on the Assembly election in the state, which is due early next year.

"The election results of one state will not have an effect on the election of another state. The issues will be different. Whatever may the Gujarat poll results be, it will have no impact on Karnataka," he said.

The Congress leader also claimed that by ensuring the party's victory in the Assembly polls, Karnataka would give the "first gift" to newly-appointed Congress president Rahul Gandhi for his leadership. Claiming that there was no anti-incumbency against his  government, Siddaramaiah said if it was there, the Congress would have got to know about it in the Nanjangud and Gundlupet bypolls, which the party won by big margins.

"I am sure that in 2018, we will come back to power hundred per cent," he added. The Congress has already announced that Siddaramaiah will be its face in the Karnataka Assembly polls. Expressing doubts about the BJP's performance in Gujarat, despite anti-incumbency and a strong undercurrent against it, the chief minister said the poll results lent credence to the doubts regarding EVMs.

Noting that the trends of the results showed an improved performance of the Congress, the chief minister gave the credit for that to Rahul Gandhi. "I feel, in Gujarat, we have won despite losing. The people have shown their support to Rahul Gandhi's leadership," he said.  -- PTI

16:53   AAP decimated in Gujarat
The BJP decimated the Aam Aadmi Party in Gujarat. Of the 30-odd seats that Arvind Kejriwal's AAP contested in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly election, the party ended up playing an (unwilling) foil in two. In nearly all the remaining seats, the AAP candidates lost their deposits, with some of them even polling votes in two digits. The three seats where the AAP made its presence somewhat felt are Chhota Udepur, Wankaner, and Bapunagar. In Chhota Udepur, AAP's Arjunbhai Versingbhai Rathva polled nearly 4500 votes, which was the best performance by any AAP leader in Gujarat, where electoral politics is largely marked by a bipolar contest between the BJP and the Congress.

Echoing his party's mood, Modi flashed a victory sign after he arrived in Parliament in New Delhi.

Party leaders used the 1992 Aamir Khan starrer "Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar" title to downplay the better than projected performance of the Congress in Gujarat and a possible decline in their own numbers.

"Jo jeeta wohi Sikandar (whoever wins is king). This is the message to those who joked about vikas (development)," said Union minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

Union minister Smriti Irani seconded him and said the victory was dedicated to booth-level party workers and those who voted for "good governance" and "development". Asked whether the Congress had given the party a tough fight, she said, "I feel 'Jo jeeta wohi Sikander'..."

The BJP today headed for a record sixth straight victory in Gujarat assembly polls, and was set to evict the Congress in Himachal Pradesh, widening the party's grip over the country's politics with general elections only 18 months away.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh (on Rahul Gandhi): Abhi toh kuch nahi bolunga kyunki woh haal hi mein adhyaksh bane hain lekin 'sar mundwate hi ole pade'. I dont want to comment right now because he has just become the president, but he has been greeted by misfortune in his very first venture.

13:52   Poor loser Nirupam blames EVMs for Cong loss
Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam today said the BJP's victory in Gujarat was not because of the people in the state but because of EVMs. He also termed electronic voting machines a "big threat to Indian democracy".

"When the entire Gujarat was against the BJP and empty chairs could be seen during the prime minister's poll rallies, this victory for the BJP is not by the people of Gujarat but by the EVMs.

"We suspected this right from the beginning. All beware, this is a big threat to Indian democracy," the president of the Mumbai unit of the Congress said in a tweet.

The former Lok Sabha MP also recalled an October 24 tweet in which he said the Congress will win 125-140 seats and the BJP only 40-47, contrary to opinion polls.

"I still stand by this tweet. This would have been the result if EVM would not have been tampered," he said on Twitter. The BJP is set to form government in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. -  PTI

13:40   Can EVMs be tampered? Experspeak
This is what Chief Election Commissioner AK Joti said on EVM tampering: "Questions being raised about EVMs have already been answered by us in the media. VVPATs were there in every polling station in Gujarat, which enabled voters to see whom they voted for, so issues being raised aren't right. I assure that EVMS cannot be tampered with. All arrangements have been made in Gujarat by the Chief Electoral officer of the state, at all places in counting halls for the state assembly elections. I assure you that there can be no tampering with the EVMs."

This is what former CECs have to say on EVM tampering.

Former Chief Election Commissioner of India, HS Brahma: "I firmly believe that our EVMs, VVPATs cannot be tampered with. This matter should be closed once and for all as it is tried and tested. EVM is a standalone machine, question of hacking doesn't arise."

Former CEC, Naveen Chawla: EVMs cannot be tampered with, even in the future. I am very clear about this. During my time, BJP had raised doubts on EVM so we had also held a demonstration like earlier this year for all to come and try rig it.

BJP's Shatrughan Sinha is unstinting in his praise for the PM and the BJP president as trends indicate a double win for the party in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.

"@ShatruganSinha Congratulations to the hon'ble PM @narendramodi for his untiring efforts, sincerity, energy...and his magic, which remains intact. Congrats also to the great strategist National BJP President @AmitShah & to @arunjaitley for our comprehensive victory in HP & Gujarat. Jai BJP!"

However, the MP from Patna Sahib was not so charitable earlier. This is his tweet on December 12 before the exit polls suggested a win for his party.

"Humble appeal to our one man show & two man army. Please return "home" to Delhi, if we've exhausted all our tricks, tantrums, wrong statements & tall promises. Time to also bring back the ministers, ministries & Govt. sitting in Gujarat &  fighting amongst themselves to get credit. ...If we are victorious, we know you shall get full credit..but if we are not, then who will take the rap? There's an old saying - "Taali kaptaan ko to gaali bhi kaptaan ko". Hope wish and pray that we get only Taalis in Gujarat elections. Jai Hind!"

Celebrations broke out at the Gujarat BJP headquarters 'Kamalam' in Gandhinagar today as soon as the trends suggested that the ruling party was poised for a victory in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state.

Party supporters gathered in large numbers at the office and distributed sweets among themselves. On the other hand, only a few people could be seen at the Congress headquarters in Ahmedabad.

The BJP supporters, waiving the saffron flag and donning the party cap, greeted each other over the impending victory of the party which is set to retain power for the sixth term in a row.

"The Congress carried out negative politics and talked about caste. They said development has gone crazy, when in fact people in the opposition party had gone crazy. The people in Gujarat supported development over caste," said a supporter of the ruling party.

He was referring to the Congress' campaign theme "Vikas Gando Thayo Che" (development has gone crazy), ahead of the polls. The BJP had launched a counter drive, titled "I am development, I am Gujarat".  -- PTI

12:42   Guj results indicate people not happy with BJP: Shiv Sena
The Shiv Sena today said the people were not happy with the BJP in Gujarat, going by the trends of the Assembly election counting. The BJP appeared to be on its way to retain power in the state, with trends from 182 seats giving it a lead in 101 and 3 wins while the Congress followed with 71 and one win.. The simple majority mark in the 182-member Assembly is 92.

BJP's Babubhai Bokhiriya won Porbandar Assembly seat, defeating Congress' Arjun Modhvadia by a margin of 1,855 votes. BJP's candidate Suresh Bhardwaj defeated Independent Harish Janartha in Shimla seat by 1,903 votes while in Anni, BJP's Kishori Lal beats Cong's Paras Ram 5,983 votes.

"We (the BJP) came to power in the country by citing the much-touted 'Gujarat model' (of development). If people in Gujarat are not happy (with the BJP) today, then understand their psyche, understand what people in the country feel," Sena MP Sanjay Raut said.

"The (BJP should) understand the mindset of people of Gujarat (and) the reason the people there are not happy," he said. The Rajya Sabha member claimed that the Narendra Modi-led government had not registered success on a single issue, be it on security, Kashmir, Pakistan, note ban, unemployment or farmer suicides. "This is what I gather from the Gujarat election results," Raut said.

Raut's remarks came on a day the Sena, BJP's bickering ally, heaped praise on Rahul Gandhi, lauding the newly appointed Congress president for "fighting the Gujarat poll battle without bothering about the result".

The Uddhav Thackeray-led party said the 47-year-old Amethi MP has taken over the reins of the grand old party at a crucial stage. "Rahul Gandhi has accepted the responsibility as Congress president at a crucial stage. There should be no objection in wishing him all the best," said an editorial in the Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana'.

12:24   Gujarat's big-ticket winners: CMs and the CM slayer
Jignesh Mevani, the Dalit leader contesting the Gujarat polls from the Vadagam (SC) seat in Banaskantha district as an Independent candidate has won. He has the support of the Congress.

Mevani, the face of last years Dalit agitation in Gujarat, also received the backing of the Aam Aadmi Party.

He had declared his candidature as sitting MLA Manibhai Vaghela said the state unit of the Congress had asked him not to enter the fray as a part of an agreement with the Dalit activist.

At a protest rally in the wake of the flogging of dalits in Una, Mevani the convenor of the Dalit Atyachar Ladat Samiti had led a rally of 20,000 dalits.

The protest ultimately led to the resignation of former Chief Minister, Anandi Ben, and a disturbance among the partys top ranks.

Mevani had considered activist and slain journalist Gauri Lankesh as his adopted mother. Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel wins Mahesana with a slim margin of 2200 votes. CM Vijay Rupani has also won.

11:49   Rahul put up nice campaign; results a win for Cong: Gehlot
As the BJP appeared to be on its way to retain power in Gujarat, senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot today said he saw the results as a "victory" for the party due to the response its chief Rahul Gandhi's campaign got from the people.

Gehlot, the Congress election in-charge for Gujarat, said Gandhi ran a nice campaign in the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Trends from 182 seats in the state, gave the BJP a lead in over a 102 seats while the Congress was following with 77. The simple majority mark in the 182-member Assembly is 92.

The Congress, however, appears to be on its way to improve its 2012 tally. "The way the Congress campaigned and the way Rahul Gandhi did bus trips, we put up a very nice campaign. Whatever the results, the country will see this as the Congress' victory," Gehlot said.

"Through the campaigning and manifesto, we have been successful in reflecting the feelings of the people of Gujarat and we believe we have been successful in that," he said.

To a question, Gehlot said the saffron party tried to turn the direction of the campaign by raising the 'son of the soil' issue. "The BJP tried to turn the campaign in another direction by its 'son of the soil' comments and saying that he (Modi) is a prime minister from Gujarat. We have given a very nice message to the people of Gujarat," he said.

He said it is not the culture of the Congress to make such comments. "Rahulji (Gandhi) had said that Congress people will not make such commments against the prime minister.

The manner in which the prime minister made comments against Manmohan Singhji, Soniaji and Rahulji, we did not want to respond to them in the same language," he said. -- PTI

Congress leader and six-time Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh is fighting against former chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal to be the next head of the state.

In 2012, the Congress Party defeated the BJP and won an outright majority by winning 36 of the 68 seats under the leadership of Virbhadra Singh thus proving most of the pollsters and exit polls wrong, which had predicted a photo-finish.

The polling had recorded 74.61 per cent voter turnout, the highest-ever in the state. However, the exit polls had suggested a change of political guard in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state.

Counting of votes started this morning for the high-stakes Gujarat Assembly polls, considered a prestige battle for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his home state and a litmus test for new Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

While the BJP is seeking a sixth straight term in office, the Congress is aiming to stage a comeback in power after being in the opposition for over two decades.

The main contestants from the BJP are Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani (Rajkot West), Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel (Mehsana) and state BJP unit president Jitu Vaghani (Bhavnagar West).

The main contenders from the Congress are Shaktisinh Gohil (Mandvi), Arjun Modhvadia (Porbandar), Siddharth Patel (Dabhoi), and Paresh Dhanai (Amreli). 07:52   EC withdraws notice to Rahul over TV interviews, says reviewing poll law
The Election Commission has withdrawn its notice to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his TV interviews during Gujarat polls, and said it will revisit a provision in the election law under which it was issued.

The poll body had on December 13 issued the show cause notice to Rahul Gandhi for "prima facie" violating the provisions under the election law and the model code by giving interviews to TV channels.

While withdrawing the notice, it told the Congress and the BJP, "The Commission is of the considered view that due to multi-fold expansion of digital and electronic media, the extant Model Code of Conduct, Section 126 of the RP Act, 1951, and other related provisions require revisiting to cater to the requirement and challenges of the present and emerging
situations."

The poll body also decided to set up a panel to suggest amendments to a provision in the election law barring campaigning 48 hours ahead of polling, following complaints that it has failed to keep pace with information technology.

The order comes in the wake of controversies over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's FICCI meeting, Rahul Gandhi's TV interviews and the release of BJP manifesto in Gujarat -- all after campaigning had ended in the state.
