Ameerul Islam (pictured), who raped and murdered a young girl in Ernakulam is brought to the Ernakulam chief judicial magistrate court today. The quantum of punishment will be announced soon. The convict has maintained that he did not do anything. "I didn't do anything. I don't know who did it," he said.

The Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court on Tuesday had held Ameerul Islam, a migrant worker from Assam, guilty in the Jisha murder and rape case. The court will pronounce the quantum of punishment today.

Twenty-nine-year-old Jisha, a law student hailing from Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district, was brutally raped and murdered at her house in Kuruppampadi on April 28, 2016. The crime triggered massive public outrage and a heated debate on the question of womens safety in Kerala.
