The Election Commission today served a showcause notice to Rahul Gandhi for giving interviews to Gujarati TV channels on the eve of final phase of the assembly polls.

The Congress President-elect gave interviews to Gujarati TV channels, which was before the 48-hour deadline for the Model Code of Conduct to be end.

The second-phase of voting in the Gujarat polls is scheduled to take place tomorrow.

The EC has asked Rahul to reply by 5 pm on December 18.

The poll panel asked Rahul to explain why action should not be taken against him for violating provisions of Model Code of Conduct, failing to which the commission will decide the matter without any further reference to him.

As a controversy erupted after several Gujarati news channels started airing the interviews, the BJP alleged Gandhi has turned so "desperate" fearing defeat in the Gujarat polls that he "violated" the Model Code of Conduct to giving the media interviews.

Earlier, the EC asked TV channels to "forthwith stop" airing interviews of Rahul as they violated the election law.
