Boosted by the Bharatiya Janata Party's win in civic polls in Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today suggested a repeat in assembly polls in Gujarat where the BJP has ruled for 22 straight years.

"In Uttar Pradesh, where the Congress ruled for decades, the state from where generations of top Congress leaders belong...we saw what happened there in the local elections. The Congress was wiped out. UP knows the Congress well and so does Gujarat," he said during a public rally in Gujarat's Bharuch.

The PM said that the Congress opposed his government just for the sake of it.

"My problem with Congress politics is simple - they oppose us just for the sake of opposing. They oppose things like bullet train only because they could not take this initiative forward and are envious someone else is," he said.

Modi also questioned the secular credentials of the Congress and said the party relied on divisive politics in its quest for power.

"The Congress strategy is to divide people -- divide people on lines of caste, community, urban-rural...all this just for power," he said

Later today, the PM will address rallies in Surendranagar and Rajkot in Saurashtra.

Tomorrow, he is scheduled to address rallies at four places -- Dharampur in Valsad, followed by Bhavnagar and in Junagadh and Jamnagar in Saurashtra.
