Prime Minister Narendra Modi today signalled a shift in his government's "hardline" Kashmir policy, echoing former chief minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's 2002 formula of "na bandook se, na goli se; baat banegi boli se (not the gun, nor bullets, a solution will be reached through dialogue".

For the most part, Modi's fourth Independence Day address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort appeared to be an effort to allay fears among sections of his supporters of a government adrift, particularly on the economic front that has not been bringing in good tidings despite the bid to present a rosy picture.  Read more
