The Pentagon has released a statement after the US attack on Homs.

It reports that US forces conducted the cruise missile strike against a Syrian Air Force airfield at 4.40am Syrian time.

59 missiles were launched with targets including radars, petroleum storage and ammunition supply bunkers.

"The strike was a proportional response to Assad's heinous act.

"Shayrat Airfield was used to store chemical weapons and Syrian air forces."

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also added that while US officials did warn Russian forces in Syria about the strikes they did not seek approval from the Russians.
