The United Nations on Thursday asked India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and encouraged them to continue their effort to resolve their differences peacefully and through dialogue, UN secretary general's spokesperson said.

"We are obviously following the situation with great concern concerning the increase of tensions across the Line of Control," Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters on Thursday.

The UN military observer group for India and Pakistan is aware of the reports of ceasefire violations and right now is liaising with the concerned authorities to obtain further information, he said.

"The UN calls on the government of India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and encourage them to continue their effort to resolve their differences peacefully and through dialogue," he said.
