A battery of Israel's Iron Dome missile defence system was activated on Saturday and successfully intercepted a rocket fired from Syria over the Golan Heights, according to Israel's Channel 2.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

"A short time ago a projectile fired from Syria was intercepted by the Iron Dome aerial defense system. No injuries have been reported," a military statement said.

A spokeswoman could not immediately say if it was the first time Iron Dome had seen action on the Golan but it was a departure from recent tit-for-tat artillery fire and occasional retaliatory air strikes.

According to the Jerusalem Post, an IDF assessment came to the conclusion that the intercepted missile was stray fire resulting from adjacent battles between Assad regime forces and rebels on the Syrian Golan.
