The Congress on Saturday defended the decision to accept Rs 50 lakh donation from Zakir Naik's non-governmental organisation in 2011, saying the Islamic Research Foundation was not under suspicion at that time.

"The government must tell people should Congress have been an astrologer when it accepted unsolicited donation of Rs 50 lakh in 2011from Zakir Naik's NGO?" Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.

He asked the Centre that, at that time, was this organisation was under any needles of suspicion?

"Now there may be allegations, but by that logic, from 2014-16, after Bangladesh's terrible blasts (sic), why didn't the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) ban this organisation on its own because the needles of suspicion against this organisation were pointed more recently, globally and here too," Singhvi said.

The Congress leader said that the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust refunded the amount two months ago as soon as it was found that a donation in the past (from Zakir Naik's foundation) has been accepted.

"Unfortunate that those in power aren't exercising the least degree of responsibility in sensationalising matters," Singhvi said.
