All India Congress Committee General Secretary Digvijaya Singh today said the ruling BJP has "changed the meaning of secularism" and was taking up issues convenient to its political agenda.
Addressing a gathering at the Rajiv Sadbhavana Yatra in Hyderabad, Singh hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying BJP was taking up issues that would "divide people on communal lines."
"BJP has changed the meaning of secularism. Those who oppose BJP are being termed as 'anti-nationals'. Those who support them are called nationalists. According to BJP or Sangh, Muhammad Ali Jinnah who was behind the division of this country, is secular and Mahatma Gandhi who fought and took bullet for the unity of Hindus and Muslims is called communal," the senior leader alleged.
He charged the BJP with taking political advantage out of the sacrifices made by the Indian soldiers.
Reacting to Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar's recent remark where he credited his 'RSS teachings' behind taking decision to conduct 'surgical strikes' across LoC, Singh said, "Is it not insulting the Army? Our Foreign Affairs Secretary says surgical strikes were held even before also. You mean to say the Army had the ideology of Sangh at that time also?"
Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar told a Parliamentary panel yesterday that the army had carried out "target specific, limited-calibre, counter-terrorist operations" across the LoC in the past too but this is for the first time the government has gone public about it.
He ridiculed Modi's recent comments that the country would go from "Yudh" (war) to "Budh" (referring to Buddha, peace) and sought to know if the government wants to destroy the lives of lakhs of people before seeking "peace like Samrat Ashoka."
"The NDA government has failed on all fronts. No jobs, no increase in FDIs, no black money brought back to India. In order to cover up their failures, they want bring war between India and Pakistan," he claimed.

18:14   Thumbs down for Salman Khan, Ranveer will now taste the thunder
Beverages major Coca Cola India has dropped Bollywood superstar Salman Khan as brand ambassador for its soft drink 'Thums Up' after four years of association and the company is in talks with young star Ranveer Singh to replace him.
The contract with Khan had expired last month and the company has chosen not to renew it, according to industry sources.

When contacted, Coca Cola India declined to comment.

The company's decision to not to renew the contract with the 50-year-old actor is more to do with the image of Coca Cola, which is seen as a young brand, a source said.
"That explains why Coca Cola is talking to a much younger star like Ranveer Singh," the source added.
Khan has been among the top celebrity endorsers reportedly charging Rs 5 crore per year per brand. Recently, he had courted controversy when he supported Pakistani artists saying "they were not terrorists" in the wake of a debate on whether they should be allowed to work in Indian movies after the Uri attack.
Coca Cola India had roped in Khan as its brand ambassador for the second time to endorse its Thums Up brand in October 2012 replacing another Bollywood star Akshay Kumar. He had earlier endorsed the brand in early 2000s.
At that time, Coca-Cola India had also signed an agreement with Being Human -- The Salman Khan Foundation -- to jointly promote, conceive and execute charitable and social activities.

Tamil Nadu's ruling AIADMK today named its candidates for the Thanjavur, Aravakurichi and Thirupparankundram Assembly constituencies.

The polls to Thanjavur and Aravakurichi and bypoll to Thirupparankumdram will all be held on November 19.

Stealing a march over rival parties, the AIADMK named M Rengasamy in Thanjavur, former transport minister V Senthil Balaji for Aravakurichi and AK Bose from Thirupparankundram.

Modernist painter Francis Newton Souza's 'The Deposition' sold for a whopping 1,565,000 (approx Rs 13 crore) at Sotheby's Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art Sale in London.

The 1963 masterwork, which was the top lot of the sale, is among the most celebrated works of the artist from his exhibition 'The Human and the Divine Predicament', held at London's Grosvenor Gallery in 1964.

17:26   Another attempt to sell Mallya's Goa Kingfisher Villa failed
Goa's plush Kingfisher Villa, where Vijay Mallya has hosted several glitzy parties in the past, failed to attract a single bidder at an e-auction today -- marking yet another failed attempt by lenders to recover dues from the embattled businessman.
While repeated attempts have been made without any success for sale of several other assets kept as collaterals by erstwhile Kingfisher Airlines of the Mallya-led UB Group, the famed Villa was put under hammer for the first time.
However, the auction turned out to be a damp squib, supposedly due to its high reserve price at Rs 85.3 crore, sources said.
The 12,350 sq mt Villa was once used by Mallya to host lavish parties in his 'good times'.
"None of the bidders came forward, so the auction of Kingfisher Villa failed. Higher reserve price could be the reason," a source said.
The sea-facing palatial villa, situated in Candolim, Goa had earlier attracted interest from at least half a dozen players in the hospitality industry and a media group, when it was opened for inspection to interested bidders during the end of September and early October.
The 17-lender consortium led by State Bank of India took physical possession of the property in May after a long legal battle with United Spirits over tenancy rights.
The Villa was owned by United Breweries Holdings and mortgaged by Kingfisher Airlines to the consortium of banks to obtain loans in 2010.
The Villa is among many movable and immovable properties under lenders' possession, which they are trying to auction as a part to recover Rs 9,000 crore from Mallya.

17:13   Sad that Karan Johar has to prove his patriotism: Benegal
Coming out in support of Karan Johar, veteran director Shyam Benegal today said it is sad that the Ae Dil Hai Mushkil filmmaker had to reiterate his patriotism.

Johar made a video appeal yesterday to those protesting the release of his directorial venture because it has Pakistani actor Fawad Khan. Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena has threatened to stall the movie's release on October 28.
Benegal, 81, also questioned the constant demand made on people to prove their patriotism.
"I feel very sad that he had to make a statement like that because how can anybody doubt his patriotism or his love for this country. Does it need to be reiterated everyday of his life or my life, because there is a demand on people to prove his patriotism? Why should one do that?
"When you are born here, when you live here or make a livelihood here, you are going to live all your life in your country and you are not planning to leave or go anywhere else. You are an important and successful member of the society. Why should a person like him have to constantly say that he will not do this? Why have we come to this situation?," Benegal said.
In the video, Johar had said that he was hurt to be called an anti-national because "country comes first" for him.
Meanwhile, veteran scriptwriter Salim Khan tweeted that film industry is not divided and is the only place where talent is valued.
"What works is talent & capability. This is true from the time of Dada Saheb Phalke till date. It is true that there are some amongst us who have aligned themselves to political parties for personal gain.
"And yes we are a happy lot. If our films work we are happy and if a rivals film flops we are happy too. And we live happily ever after," he tweeted.

16:55   Ban terrorists not artistes: Taslima on boycott of Pakistanis
Noted Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen today slammed those who are boycotting Pakistani artistes, saying terrorists should be banned not artistes, and cautioned that such actions were similar to Hitler's idea of 'blood purity'.

In a series of tweets, Taslima, who is living in exile in India after facing death threats from fundamentalists in Bangladesh, said, "Ban terrorists. Don't ban artists. Artistes belong to the places where art is honoured.

"Today you ban Pakistani artists. Tomorrow you ban Bangladeshi writers. You will live with yourselves. 'Pure Indian' blood. Hitler's idea of 'blood purity'."

Hitler, who led Germany during World War II, propagated the idea of a "pure Aryan race" supremacy under Nazism, leading to the killings of millions of Jews and ban on mixed marriages.

Tasleema's came a day after filmmaker Karan Johar said he will not "engage with talent" from Pakistan in future and made a fervent appeal against stalling his upcoming film 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' that features Fawad Khan.

So instead of showing your bravery on those helpless artists, come  have a dangal with me, and let the world see who is a bigger goonda."

People cannot be put to a daily test of patriotism, senior BJP leader Ram Madhav has told NDTV in a comment on a Delhi minister's recent attack on Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti.

Aam Aadmi Party's Kapil Mishra had at a recent function in Delhi accosted Ms Mufti with the question, "Do you believe Burhan Wani was a terrorist," referring to the 22-year-old Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist killed by security forces in Kashmir earlier this year.

"You cannot put people to a daily patriotism test. You can't ask them to prove their patriotism every day. They are responsible people holding responsible positions," said Madhav, who is in charge of managing BJP's alliance with Mufti's Peoples Democratic Party or PDP in Jammu and Kashmir.

Mufti, he said, was confronted with such questions regularly for some time now and she had handled "such situations with great maturity and she has been consistent. She is very clear in her head about such issues. She has no ambiguities about the issue".

The unnamed chaiwalla, who is referred to as, well, chaiwalla, became a social media sensation after a Pakistani photographer called Javeria (Jiah Ali), posted this image (alongside) on her Instagram account.

11:59   Wish Karan Johar had expressed solidarity with army after Uri: BJP
After film-maker Karan Johar gave in to the pressure of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and said he will not work with Pakistani talent in future, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday said that it would have been better had the director expressed solidarity with India's armed forces post Uri and Pathankot attacks.

BJP spokesperson Shaina NC told ANI that the Centre has decided to give protection to every theatre that is going to showcase Johar's film.

"Clearly, there is a sentiment in public at large, which is anti-Pakistan at the given juncture as we all know post Uri and Pathankot. I wish the directors like Karan Johar would have come out with a statement in solidarity with our armed forces after the attacks rather than let a controversy break loose," said NC.

"However, we do believe that the rule of law must prevail and because it cannot implement retrospective, our government has decided to give protection to every theatre that is going to showcase that film," she added.

NC further said that the question is who has actually boycotted this particular film, as the government has no role to play.

Earlier on Tuesday, Johar broke his silence on the row over his upcoming film 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil', in an emotional video statement expressing a "deep sense of hurt and pain" by the charge of being anti-national.

"I condemn terror in the strongest terms, I respect our Army, for me, the country comes first," the 44-year-old said.Johar, who made his directorial debut with the blockbuster romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, further said:
"The best way to express your patriotism is to spread love and thats all I have ever tried to do through my work and cinema."

Yesterday, prominent industry veterans including filmmaker Mukesh Bhatt met Mumbai Police Commissioner Dattatray Padsalgikar and Joint Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Deven Bharti, who assured them that they would provide protection to theatres screening Dharma Productions next release. The meeting took place in the wake of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) veiled threat of vandalizing multiplexes if they screen 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil'.

11:22   Father's comments inappropriate, offensive: Ivanka Trump
Ivanka Trump finally broke her silence on on the 2005 tape in which her father Donald trump made sexually aggressive remarks about women, and said that the comments were "clearly inappropriate and offensive".

"My father's comments were clearly inappropriate and offensive and I'm glad that he acknowledged this fact with an immediate apology to my family and the American people," CNN quoted Trump's eldest daughter as saying in a statement.

She added that her "greatest comfort' is that she knows her father while "most of the people who write about him don't'. This gives her the ability to "shrug off' reports she knows are wrong.

Ivanka also said that media often refers to her as Trumps surrogate wife which was a deeply offensive thing to say.

Her statement comes the same day as Melania Trump, who defended her husband and called those accusations lies and that Trump was egged on into boy talk.

She also said she never heard her husband use that kind of language before. The tape in which Trump bragged about sexually aggressive behaviour toward women was published by The Washington Post and NBC on October 8. Several women have accused Trump of sexual misconduct since then.

09:55   How candidate Obama lost the first debate to Romney... and other stories
US Presidential debates provide the crucial opportunity for candidates to make a "big difference" and influence voters but the history of debating is also littered with gaffes, from Richard Nixon's legendary "sweaty upper lip" to George H W Bush checking his watch.

With Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump gearing up for their final debate today at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, Dean of the Austin Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at Baruch College, David Birdsell said the final debate is the "last known opportunity" to make a big difference but the candidates can also "injure themselves through a gaffe, a serious misstep of some sort".

"This is indeed the last scheduled opportunity for either candidate to make a big difference," Birdsell said at a session organised by the New York Foreign Press Centre this week on what to expect in the final debate.

He said as the debates progress, the number of people who call themselves undecided shrinks as more and more people make up their mind about which candidate they want to vote for.

While the presidential debates provide the candidates a unique opportunity to win voters with their performance and policy visions, Birdsell said the history of presidential debating is littered with gaffes, including Nixon's famous sweaty upper lip and shifting eyes in the first  ever presidential debate in 1960 and President Barack  Obama's lackluster performance in his first debate with Mitt Romney in 2012.

The first presidential debate was held in September 1960 between US Senator John F Kennedy, the Democratic nominee, and Vice President Nixon, the Republican nominee, in Chicago. It was also the nation's first televised debate and Nixon was even criticised for wearing his light-coloured suit against a light-coloured background.
The picture of Nixon dabbing the sweat off his upper lip during the debate is part of legendary debate yore.

Birdsell said there was widespread consensus that Obama too "did not do such a great job" in the first debate against Romney in 2012. "Romney looked energetic. He was smart. He had his numbers behind him. And Obama looked a little, 'I'm here, I'm going to make my arguments but I'm a little tired and I really wish I weren't here'", Birdsell said. Obama, however, was back in the game in the second debate, meeting "expectations as a tremendously articulate, successful communicator" and emerging the victor in the debate.

09:21   How India-China relations changed between 1994 and 2016
"It does not have to be that way." Those eight words of a chorus line made memorable by John Edwards, the vice presidential running mate during John Kerry's unsuccessful American presidential bid in 2004, are applicable to the just concluded Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa summit in Goa. It was not that way, as Edwards would convincingly put it in a very different setting, that New Delhi conducted its neighbourhood diplomacy or, for that matter, dealt with Moscow 20 or 25 years ago when the diplomatic challenges that this country faced were no different from what Narendra Modi faces today. 07:58   Ecuador says it cut Assange's internet over US election leaks
Ecuador has said that it had cut the internet access of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is holed up at its London embassy, due to leaks by the anti-secrecy website that could impact the US election.

"The government of Ecuador respects the principle of non-intervention in the internal affairs of other states. It does not interfere in external electoral processes, nor does it favor any particular candidate," the Ecuadoran foreign ministry said in a statement.
In consequence, the ministry said, it decided to "temporarily restrict" communications at the embassy.

WikiLeaks has published a damaging trove of hacked emails from US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's campaign in the recent weeks.

Ecuador reaffirmed its decision to grant Assange asylum, and said the restriction on communications at its embassy did not hinder WikiLeaks itself.

"This temporary restriction does not prevent the WikiLeaks organisation from carrying out its journalistic activities," it said.

Assange fled to Ecuador's London embassy in June 2012.

The 45-year-old Australian is fighting extradition to Sweden to face a rape accusation.

00:35   Trump backing of Russia unprecedented: Obama
United States President Barack Obama on Tuesday called Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's admiration of Russian President Vladimir Putin "unprecedented" in American politics and accused Republicans of softening stand on Russia.
According to the outgoing US President, Trump's continued flattery of Putin and the degree to which he appears to model many of his policies and approaches to politics on Putin, is unprecedented in American politics.
"It is out of step with, not just what Democrats think but out of step with what, up until the last few months, almost every Republican thought, including some of the ones who are now endorsing Trump," he said.
Trump, he noted, rarely surprises him these days.
"I am much more surprised and troubled by the fact that you have Republican officials who historically have been adamantly anti-Russian and in fact have attacked me for even engaging them diplomatically now supporting and, in some cases, echoing his positions. It's quite a reversal," he said.
"We think that Russia is a large important country with a military that is second only to ours, and has to be a part of the solution on the world stage, rather than part of the problem.
"But their behavior has undermined international norms and international rules in ways that we have to call them out on," Obama told reporters at a joint news conference with the visiting Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, in the Rose Garden of the White House.
"Anybody who occupies this office should feel the same way because these are values that we fought for and we protected," he said.

00:32   Clinton team mulled Apple's Cook for veep, emails show
Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign considered tapping Apple chief executive Tim Cook to be her running mate, according to hacked emails published on Tuesday by WikiLeaks.
In an email dated March 17 to Clinton, campaign chairman John Podesta also proposed the mega-billionaire Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, his wife Melinda and General Motors chief executive Mary Barra as possible Democratic vice presidents.
"Let me know if there are people you would like to see added or removed," Podesta wrote, enclosing a list of more than 30 names.
"I have organized names in rough food groups."
The email also identified well known military figures -- such as Navy Admiral Mike Mullen, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Marine Corps General John Allen, the former commander of US forces in Afghanistan -- as well as Clinton's opponent for the Democratic nomination, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and other lawmakers.
Podesta also suggested billionaire former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg as well as more conventional political choices, such as Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown.
Clinton ultimately settled on Virginia Senator Tim Kaine to campaign with her.
