Four police officers were injured in a notorious working class housing estate near Paris today after being struck by a volley of Molotov cocktails, a police source said.

The injured officers, two of whom are in a serious condition, "were in a police vehicle monitoring a surveillance camera near a traffic light. About 10 people attacked them with volleys of Molotov cocktails," shortly before 3.00 pm the source said.
The two badly injured officers "have major burns and were taken to a hospital in Paris," he added.

16:58   Pak lawmaker demands action against Hafiz Saeed
A lawmaker from Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's party has questioned the government over its continued patronage to Jamat-ud-Dawa chief and mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attack Hafiz Saeed, describing it as a reason for international isolation of the country.

"Which eggs is Hafiz Saeed laying for us that we are nurturing him? The efficacy of our foreign policy speaks for itself when we could not curtail Hafiz Saeed," Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz parliamentarian Rana Muhammad Afzal said during a meeting of the national assembly Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs.

"India has built such a case against us about the JuD chief that during the meeting on Kashmir, foreign delegates mention Saeed as the bone of contention between Pakistan and India," Afzal said.

He recalled his recent trip to France, where he had been tasked to explain the worsening situation in Kashmir and said that the name of Saeed was brought up time and again by foreign delegates as he is considered a 'notorious character' in international circles.

Furious over Afzal's remarks, Saeed asked Sharif to take action against such people in the ruling party. "I caution Nawaz Sharif to be aware of his 'foolish friends' who are hurting the Kashmir cause. They must have some hidden agenda which the premier should dig out," Saeed said in response.

He said such elements are trying to create differences between the Pakistan army and the civilian government and this will be very dangerous for the country.

Saeed also asked the prime minister to give extension to Army Chief General Raheel Sharif who is retiring next month.

14:21   Complaint filed against Rahul Gandhi in UP for 'khoon ki dalali' remark
A complaint has been filed against Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi in Chandauli Court in Uttar Pradesh over his 'Khoon ki dalali' comment for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, the youth wing of Bharatiya Janata Party, also staged a protest against Rahul over his remarks against PM Modi.

Rahul had hit out at the PM on Thursday, accusing him of 'hiding behind the blood of soldiers' and said that he was politically exploiting their sacrifices.

'Jinhone Hindustan ke liye surgical strike kiye hain, unke khoon ke peeche aap chhupe hain. Unki aap dalali kar rahe ho. Yeh bilkul galat hai. (You, Modi, are hiding behind the blood of soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir and those who carried out the surgical strikes for India. BJP had reacted sharply to his comments yesterday, with party chief Amit Shah saying that the Congress vice president 'crossed all limits'.

13:25   Sanjay Nirupam's wife says family receiving threats
Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam's wife Geeta Nirupam has claimed that her family is receiving threats after her husband's remarks on surgical strikes conducted by the Indian Army last month.

In an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she wrote, 'I am a dignified 50 year old lady who is openly being abused and accused in the most vulgar and demeaning manner possible not only on social media but even via phone calls. What have we done to deserve this social disgrace? Is this how you would like your own mother and wife to be treated if you make a political comment or express your political opinion? Is not your profession different from your family life?'

'If a girl is raped or molested, activists organise candle-marches to restore modesty, but not one person is ashamed of using social media to abuse, emotionally torture and verbally rape the women in my family by threatening to burn my husband alive or killing him in broad daylight -- just because he expressed his opinion. Is this any different than barbarianism?' she said.

12:52   President Obama casts early vote in Chicago
United States President Barack Obama has cast his ballot for the November 8 general elections, which would elect his successor, by taking benefit of the provision of 'early voting' in his home town of Chicago.

Early voting, which has gained popularity in the last few election cycle, allows a voter to exercise their right to vote several weeks ahead of the main date of the general elections.

Though it varies from State to State, in some cases it can go back to as many as 50 days.

However, he did not tell the press travelling with him,who did he vote for.

In fact, he pretended to hide his voting in a basement of the Chicago Board of Elections.

Obama has been campaigning for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton to succeed him in the Oval Office.

After locating his machine and beginning to vote, Obama looked up at the pool and cracked, 'they can't see who I'm voting for can they?' and feigned an effort to shield the screen.

Asked who he voted for, the US President looked up and smirked.

'Voted early today. Make sure you vote too,' Obama said in a tweet.

12:24   Pakistan never wanted escalation along LoC: Abdul Basit
Pakistan's High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit has claimed that Islamabad never wanted any increase in tensions with New Delhi.

The Express Tribune quoted Basit as saying in an interview published in the Outlook magazine on Friday,'We never wanted to escalate the situation either vertically or horizontally.'

'Pakistan has always proportionately responded to whatever [ceasefire] violation has taken place in the past. That continues to be our stance,' he said.

Replying to a question asked about what he thought happened on the night of September 29 -- the night Indian army carried out surgical strikes on the Pakistan side of the Line of Control -- Basit said, 'If you [India] want to label cross-LoC firing as surgical strikes, that is your prerogative and we can't stop you.'

'But I can assure you, had there been any surgical strikes, Pakistan would have responded immediately and proportionately. If there is any action from the Indian side, you can rest assured Pakistan will respond,' he added.

However, the Pakistan envoy warned that India was setting a dangerous example by claiming to have carried out covert raids across the LoC. 'It is very dangerous to nurture false expectations. There are high stakes involved on both sides,' he said.

He further said that 'we are very confident that our deterrence is working and Pakistan will never allow the credibility of its deterrence to erode.'

10:24   EC orders political parties not to use public funds for 'publicity'
The Election Commission has said that no political party will be allowed to use public funds and government machinery to carry out activities that amount to advertisement for it.

The Commission directed that no political party shall henceforth either use or allow the use of any public funds or public place or government machinery for carrying out any activity that will amount to advertisement for the party or propagating the election symbol allotted to the party.

The commission also clarified that any violation of the directions will be treated as violation of a lawful direction of the Commission.

The development comes following a judgement of the Delhi high court which had in July remanded back to the poll panel a plea seeking cancellation of Bahujan Samaj Party symbol 'elephant' for alleged misuse of public funds by the erstwhile Mayawati government in installing its statues across the state.

09:35   RNC chairman criticises Trump for lewd remarks against women
Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus has condemned Donald Trump's sexually aggressive comments about women in a curt statement: 'No woman should ever be described in these terms or talked about in this manner. Ever.'

The RNC chiarman's statement came as the revelations about the Republican nominee's crude remarks added a newly urgent threat to his candidacy.

In the recording, Trump boasts about his sexual prowess and describes grabbing women by the genitals.

Democrats seized on the comments, first reported in the Washington Post, to renew their arguments that Trump is sexist and unfit to be president, while even many members of his own party said they could not defend them.

Trump, for his part, released a statement shortly after the Post published its report Friday afternoon, apologising for any offense they caused, but not for the comments themselves.

03:32   Trump apologises for bragging about being able to grope women
Donald Trump bragged about trying to have sex with a married woman and being able to grope women in previously unaired footage from 2005 that surfaced on Friday.

Trump is heard discussing women in vulgar terms during off-camera banter during the taping of a segment for Access Hollywood, footage which was obtained by The Washington Post.

Trump dismissed the comments as "locker room banter" in a statement released by his campaign and sought to immediately deflect criticism onto the husband of his opponent Hillary Clinton.

The comments immediately raised the stakes for Sunday's highly anticipated debate between Trump and Clinton. The Democratic nominee has spent months portraying Trump as demeaning toward women and the emergence of the remarks could hand her -- and viewers in the town hall audience -- more evidence to make that point.

The remarks prompted Trump -- for the first time in his nearly 16-month campaign -- to apologize.

03:04   Hurricane Matthew downgraded
Hurricane Matthew has been downgraded to a Category 2 storm, according to the latest update from the US National Hurricane Centre.

In a release, the center said that "we have been very fortunate that Matthew's strongest winds have remained a short distance offshore of the Florida Coast thus far, but this should not be a reason to let down our guard," adding that only a small deviation to the left of the forecast track could bring the winds onshore.

The western eyewall of the storm, which contains the strongest winds, is still expected to move "over or very near" the coast of north-eastern Florida and Georgia tonight.

01:19   US officially accuses Russia of hacking campaign to influence elections
The Obama administration on Friday officially accused Russia of carrying out a wide-ranging campaign to interfere with the 2016 elections, including by hacking the computers of the Democratic National Committee and other political officials.

The denunciation, made by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Department of Homeland Security, came as pressure was growing from within the administration and some lawmakers to hold Moscow accountable for a set of actions apparently aimed at sowing discord around the election.

The DNC publicly disclosed the intrusions in June, saying their investigation determined Russian government hackers were behind it. That was followed shortly afterwards by a major leak of DNC emails, some so embarrassing that they forced the resignation of the DNC chairwoman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, on the eve of the Democratic national convention.

The administration also blamed Moscow for the hack of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the subsequent leak of private email addresses and cell phone numbers of Democratic lawmakers.

01:05   US officials letting in illegal immigrants so they can vote: Trump
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Friday accused US authorities of speeding citizenship proceedings for some illegal immigrants so they can vote, returning to a core issue as he girded for a second debate against Democrat Hillary Clinton.

"They're letting people pour into the country so they can go and vote," Trump said during a meeting with representatives of the National Border Patrol Council, the union that represents Border Patrol agents, at Trump Tower in New York.

The New York businessman provided no specifics on the accusation.

But Shawn Moran, a Border Patrol council spokesman, said after the meeting that the union was not suggesting illegal immigrants were being allowed to vote, but that US immigration officials were fast-tracking applications for citizenship before the November 8 election.

01:04   Obama orders US economic sanctions on Myanmar lifted
President Barack Obama on Friday lifted US economic sanctions on the former pariah state of Myanmar.

Obama's move marks the culmination of years of rapprochement between the US and Myanmar that Obama has worked to facilitate. The Southeast Asian nation, also known as Burma, has pursued political reforms over the last five years following decades of oppressive military rule.

The US has already eased broad economic sanctions on Myanmar, including prohibitions on investment and trade. But the US had retained more targeted restrictions on military-owned companies and officials and associates of the former ruling junta.

US companies and banks have remained leery of involvement in one of Asia's last untapped markets.

New York Times feature: Call it India's financial epicentre, glamour hub or culinary capital -- but whatever you do, don't call it "Mumbai". You are likely to spend much of your weekend in bumper-to-bumper traffic, but with a bit of planning, you can sample the sights, glitter and art of Mumbai -- er, Bombay -- in one weekend.

01:02   Russia gets permanent airbase in Syria. Now it's looking at Cuba and Vietnam
Russia ratified a treaty with Syria on Friday that gives Moscow its first permanent airbase in the Middle East, a symbol of the Kremlin's desire to project strength overseas, as Russian officials considered renewing other Soviet-era bases in Cuba and Vietnam.

Friday's developments were largely symbolic: With the onslaught of Russian airstrikes in Syria, Moscow has left no doubt about its commitment to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad; there's no clear evidence that either Cuba or Vietnam would be open to the return of the Russian military.

But it's clear that Moscow is acting on bringing to life President Vladimir Putin's vision of Russia as a global military power, at a time when tensions between Moscow and Washington are as high as they've been since the Cold War.

01:01   British PM Theresa May expected to visit India in early November
British Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to visit India early next month, according to highly-placed sources involved in finalising the details of her first trip to the country as premier.

May's visit is likely to coincide with the India-UK Tech Summit in New Delhi between November 7 and 9, they said.

The summit is being organised by India's Department of Science and Technology and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and has Jo Johnson, UK minister for Universities, Science, Research & Innovation, as a confirmed keynote speaker from the UK end.

The bilateral summit was among the major announcements made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the UK in November 2015. The India-UK partnership has since moved into a new era, with Britain voting to leave the European Union (EU) in a referendum in June and leading to the resignation of then Prime Minister David Cameron.
