Hurricane Matthew -- a Category 4 storm -- made landfall in western Haiti on Tuesday with wind speeds reaching 145 mph as small towns and villages in the hemisphere's poorest country braced for life-threatening winds, rains and storm surge.

The storm -- at one point the most powerful hurricane in the region in nearly a decade -- dumped heavy rain as it swirled on toward Cuba and the Bahamas.

Forecasters said it could hit Florida toward the end of the week and push its way up the East Coast over the weekend.

US officials issued a Hurricane Watch from Deerfield Beach, Florida to the Volusia/Brevard county line. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect from the Florida Keys to south of Deerfield Beach.
