23:04   Wankhede brawl: Police give clean chit to SRK
The Mumbai police have informed a metropolitan magistrate's court that no 'cognisable offence' was made out against Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan in connection with a brawl at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai after an IPL match in 2012.

"After the investigation, it was found that no cognisable offence had taken place," said a police report filed in the court recently.

A local activist had filed a private complaint in the court here with regard to the incident, seeking action against Khan for abusing security personnels of the stadium.

Police said in the report that they recorded the actor's statement, and he denied the allegations.

Khan told the police that after his team Kolkata Knight Riders won the match that day, his children and their friends entered the ground and the security guard Vikas Dalvi asked them to leave.

According to Khan, he only told Dalvi that the children were with him, and nobody should touch them. His business manager then took the children out of the stadium. The actor told police that he got angry when someone spoke to him in indecent language.

23:00   Google unveils Pixel smartphones; to cost Rs 57,000 in India
Google today unveiled its new 'Pixel' brand of phones, geared up with Google Assistant and virtual reality capabilities, as it looks to challenge Apple in the premium smartphone market.

The two phones -- Pixel and Pixel XL -- will be available in India, priced at Rs 57,000 onwards, in 32GB and 128GB versions. The eagerly awaited smartphones replace the existing Nexus line.

The devices will be put up for pre-order from October 13 in India and will be sold by the end of October. The handsets would be available through channels like Flipkart, Reliance Retail, Croma and Vijay Sales in India.

India is among the first six countries where Pixel is being launched.

"Hardware isn't a new area for Google but we are now taking steps to showcase the very best of Google across a family of devices designed and built by us. This is a natural step and we are in it for the long haul," Google SVP Hardware Rick Osterloh said at an event in San Fransisco.

Building hardware and software together would let the company take full advantage of capabilities like its Google Assistant, harnessing its expertise in machine learning and artificial intelligence. While most handset vendors, other than Apple, use Google's Android operating system, the company has made various approaches to building its own hardware.

22:13   PDP 'sympathiser' of terrorists: Mishra
Delhi minister Kapil Mishra today alleged that the PDP is a "sympathiser" of terrorists and wondered why the BJP was in alliance with such a party in Jammu and Kashmir.

His remarks came a time when his party was facing heat from the BJP for remarks of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal about the surgical strikes.

"Mehbooba Mufti and PDP are sympathisers of terrorists... Allowing them to occupy the chair is betrayal...," the Delhi Tourism Minister said.
He also sought to know whether Mehbooba considers slain militant Burhan Wani and executed Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru as terrorists.

Referring to the JNU event in which the varsity's student union leader Kanhaiya was arrested, Mishra claimed that some Kashmiri students shouted slogans in support of Guru and against the country.

21:33   US postal service honours Diwali with a 'Forever Stamp'
The US Postal Service will commemorate the joyous Hindu festival of Diwali with a Forever stamp.

Wednesday shall be the first-day-of-issue dedication ceremony will take place at the Consulate General of India, New York.

The stamp design is a photograph featuring a traditional diya oil lamp beautifully lit, sitting on a sparkling gold background. Diya lamps are usually made from clay with cotton wicks dipped in a clarified butter known as ghee or in vegetable oils.
Also known as Deepavali, Diwali celebrates the triumph of good over evil. Spanning five days each autumn, it is considered by some to be the start of the new year.
On the Hindu calendar, Diwali falls on the eve of, or on, the new moon that occurs between mid-October and mid-November. In 2016, the main day of the festival will be celebrated Oct. 29 for South Indians and Oct 30 for North Indians.
Diwali is a shortened version of the Sanskrit word Deepavali, which roughly translates as a necklace of lights. During Diwali, the flickering oil-wick diyas sprinkle the homes of observers around the world.

20:53   UK's 1st transgender TV presenter chooses 'India' as name
A TV presenter who used to be a man named Jonathan returned to UK screens today as a woman named 'India' and Britain's first transgender TV news reporter.

Jonathan Willoughby underwent a 14,000-pound gender reassignment operation to become India Willoughby.

"One of the reasons I decided to stand up and be counted as trans was because of all the mis-information out there. Historically it has been branded as anything from a perversion to a joke, rather than something that is biological," the 51-year-old told the 'Daily Mirror'.

"There is so much rubbish talked about the subject even now. By telling my story I hope that I can help break down any ill-conceived pre-conceptions," she said.

As Jonathan, she was a familiar face to millions of viewers on the UK's ITV channel.

A complaint was on Tuesday filed against actor Om Puri for allegedly disrespecting Indian soldiers in a recent television show.

The complaint was filed by the president of a local organisation in Andheri police station in Mumbai.

A TV channel had called Puri to join a debate about the Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association's indefinite ban on Pakistani artistes from working in Indian projects after the Uri attack.

The complaint alleged that during the discussion, Puri said, "Who had asked soldiers to join the army? Who told them to pick the weapons?," police said.

19:16   Eye on UP polls, Modi to celebrate Dussehra in Lucknow
Breaking from tradition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the historic Aishbagh Ramlila in Lucknow on Dussehra next week, seen as yet another attempt to connect to the people of poll-bound Uttar Pradesh.

BJP vice president and Lucknow Mayor Dinesh Sharma, who is also the Ramlila's patron, said Modi has accepted his invitation to attend the October 11 event, which dates back to the times of Hindu saint Tulsidas.

The PM will participate in the 'aarti' and then fire the symbolic arrow to burn the effigy of demon king Ravana, he said.

Usually, the prime ministers have celebrated the festival in the national capital.

Modi's visit assumes an added significance because of assembly polls due next year in Uttar Pradesh where the saffron party is making a concerted bid to come back to power after a gap of 15 years and is up against ruling Samajwadi Party and main opposition Mayawati-led BSP.

The Aishbagh Ramlila is also seen as a symbol of pluralistic culture, also called 'Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb', as Muslim rulers patronised it and allotted it space equal to Eidgah, which is situated right next to it.

19:05   Pak hands over dossier to US on 'rights violations' in Kashmir
Pakistan has handed over a dossier to the United States on 'grave human rights violations' by India in Kashmir and sought the country's intervention in the matter.

Jilani said that the international community, especially the US, should take note of the "inhuman and degrading treatment" being meted out to the innocent civilians in Kashmir.

The US, being a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, should impress upon India to immediately end the "state-sponsored terrorism", the Ambassador was quoted as saying by the Ministry in a statement.

17:55   Congress rejects Nirupam's remark
The Congress has rejected the statement made by party leader Sanjay Nirupam -- casting doubts over the surgical strikes conducted by army -- saying that the party fully trusts the Indian Army and backs the government of India over the issue.

"The Congress doesn't agree with the statements made by Sanjay Nirupam, we have taken a serious note of it," party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said.

"The Congress fully trusts the army. This was neither the first surgical strike by the Indian army, nor will it be the last," Surjewala said.

He, however, also requested the Centre to 'unmask Pakistan's propaganda'.

"It's time that the government of India unmasks Paks false propaganda by revealing and making public the evidences we have," he said.

Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam had raised doubt over the veracity of the Army's surgical strikes along the Line of Control suggesting it was 'fake' even as he accused the BJP of indulging in politics over national interest.

'Every Indian wants surgical strikes against Pakistan but not a fake one to extract just political benefit by BJP. politics over national interest (sic),' Nirupam had tweeted.

16:50   Everyone wants surgical strikes against Pak, but not fake ones: Nirupam
Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam today raised doubt over the veracity of the Army's surgical strikes along the LoC suggesting it was "fake" even as as he accused BJP of indulging in politics over national interest.

"Every Indian wants surgical strikes against Pakistan but not a fake one to extract just political benefit by BJP. politics over national interest(sic)," Nirupam tweeted.

Later talking to reporters, Nirupam said it is upto the government to prove the surgical strikes did take place. He said his party was of the view that Pakistan should be punished.

"The way BJP was indulging in politics, putting up banners and taking credit gives a view whether such strikes did happen. In Goa, the Defence Minister (Manohar Parrikar) is being publicly felicitated. Why were earlier surgical strikes not announced in a press conference? Why was a press conference done now (by DGMO Lt Gen Ranbir Singh)?. Was there any pressure from the government?" he asked.

Army conducted surgical strikes on seven terror launch pads along the LoC on the intervening night of September 28 and 29, inflicting "significant casualties" on terrorists preparing to infiltrate from PoK.

The next morning, the DGMO had given this information to the media in a press conference. Pakistan, however, has been dismissing the claim as "fabrication of truth" and said India was creating "media hype" by re-branding cross-border fire as surgical strikes.

16:26   When Modi proposed & Atal disposed
The Indus Waters Treaty was not serving two barren Indian districts though it could, Narendra Modi thought. He called a meeting of senior officials in his government, who endorsed the view, and set in motion a process aimed at changing India's use of the pact. It was May 2002, and the proposal was shot down by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Last week, Modi, now the Prime Minister, ordered a review of India's use of the bilateral treaty with Pakistan as part of New Delhi's diplomatic response to the Uri terror attack that left 19 soldiers dead. Modi's desire to take a re-look at the pact's use by India dates back at least 14 years.

15:55   Surgical strikes: Raha says situation 'live', ready for any challenge
The situation is "live" in the wake of the surgical strikes on terror launch pads across the LoC and the armed forces are ready to deal with any challenge, IAF Chief Marshal Arup Raha said today.

He also said it was just a "coincidence" that Pakistan's air force's "High Mark" exercise took place at a time when tension between India and Pakistan was high.

Even as he refused to take questions on the surgical strikes by the Army last week during his customary annual press conference ahead of the Air Force Day on October 8, Raha said the force has the power to punish its enemy, but a decision on using it in an offensive role will have to be taken by the government.

"Air Force, Army and Navy are always ready," Raha, who is also the Chairman, Chief of Staff Committee (COSC), said. When told would it not be a let down if he did not comment on the surgical strikes, Raha candidly said he was in "half a mind" to call off the media interaction because he knew everybody is charged up and he will be asked questions on the issue.

"I think I should not say anything because it is very sensitive and things are still live," the Air Chief Marshal said. He asserted that the IAF is capable of taking on any contingency that one can think of. Raha is the first chief among the three Services to face the media after the surgical strikes. Officials have remained tight-lipped about the operation except for a short and crisp statement by Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) Lt Gen Ranbir Singh.

14:45   Why Adnan Sami is now Pakistan's Enemy #1
Former Pakistani singer Adnan Sami has earned himself  the status of Pakistan's Enemy #1.

The veteran singer-composer, who is is now an Indian citizen had expressed his grief after the Uri attack that killed 19 Indian army soldiers.

After Indian Army carried out surgical strikes and smashed 8 terrorist camps in PoK, Sami tweeted his congratulations to the soldiers and hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for retaliating against terrorism. "Pakistan should thank India for killing the terrorists" in the 'surgical strike', he had tweeted.

Expectedly, Sami has received a lot of backlash from Pakistani citizens who went on to label him as "traitor".

At the India Today Safaigiri Awards the singer drew parallels between garbage and terrorism to explain his point. He said, "If I see garbage flowing from my neighbour's house and entering my house, I will complain against it to my neighbour. However, if the neighbour fails to do that, I will enter his house and clean the garbage myself, because you couldn't clean the garbage, I had to enter your house and clean it."

He further added, "For years, Pakistan has been saying that they too are victims of terrorism. Here, when your neighbour is helping you out, you dont want to even acknowledge it.

Urging Pakistan to join hands with India, he said, "Eliminate it (terrorism). If you won't do it alone, let us do it together so that we and our children can live in this world in peace. That is it. There is nothing more to it. It is as simple as that. Why are you taking this personally? You yourself know there are suicide bombers who blast themselves in mosques, so if someone is helping you eliminate it, you should be thankful."

Sami's tweets earlier had hurt the sentiments of Pakistanis, the singer explained that they were not targeted towards Pakistan. I never said a word against Pakistan."

14:15   India's surgical strikes ops: Just sufficient and right on time
Exactly the opposite of 'too little, too late'; the Indian Army's response with surgical strikes on the terrorist bases across the Line of Control should be classified as 'just sufficient and right on time'.

Yet, a credibility gap is now taking shape regarding the actual conduct of these multiple operations and the level of damage inflicted. These are the type of operations hardly witnessed anywhere else in a continuing military stand-off between two armies. The reason why few can realistically relate to such operations is because the LoC remains a grey zone as far as information is concerned. 12:53   Kejriwal's remark is making him a headline in Pakistan: BJP
A day after Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal asked PM Narendra Modi to "unmask Pakistan's false propaganda" about the surgical strikes, the BJP today hit out at him asking him if he was "doubting the capacity of our jawans."

The BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad, held a press conference today saying, "Delhi CM needs to know he is a headline in Pak newspapers. Mr Kejriwal you need to know today you are the headline in Pakistan media; nothing sadder or more unfortunate. What proof is he asking for?"

In a video message yesterday, Kejriwal said, "For the last two or three days, we have seen that Pakistan has been taking foreign journalists to the border (with India). It has been trying to convince them that the surgical strikes did not take place.

"I appeal to the prime minister: Unmask Pakistan's false propaganda like the way you (Modi) and the army taught Pakistan a lesson on the ground."

Ravi Shankar Prasad responded today saying, "My appeal to Kejriwal is that please don't say anything that brings down the morale of our armed forces."

The BJP also hit out at senior Congress leader P Chidambaram saying, "I Want to ask him (P Chidambaram) is he also joining the bandwagon of doubting capacity of our jawans in conducting surgical Strikes? Is P Chidambaram seeking proof of surgical strike, the official line of the Congress party? Prasad asked.

11:33   Pakistan among top 3 refugee hosting countries: Amnesty
Ten countries accounting for 2.5 per cent of world GDP are hosting more than half the world's refugees, Amnesty International said today as it slammed what it called the selfishness of wealthy nations.

In a report on the plight faced by the world's 21 million refugees, the London-based human rights body lamented that countries immediately neighbouring crisis zones bear the brunt of the global refugee problem.

Fifty-six per cent of refugees are being sheltered in 10 countries, according to the report, in which Amnesty proposed a solution whereby the world's countries find a home for 10 per cent of the planet's refugees every year.

"A small number of countries have been left to do far too much just because they are neighbours to a crisis," said Amnesty secretary general Salil Shetty, presenting the report entitled "Tackling the global refugee crisis: from shirking to sharing responsibility".

"That situation is inherently unsustainable, exposing the millions fleeing war and persecution in countries like Syria, South Sudan, Afghanistan, and Iraq to intolerable misery and suffering. "It is time for leaders to enter into a serious, constructive debate about how our societies are going to help people forced to leave their homes by war and persecution."

Amnesty said the top refugee hosting country was Jordan, which has taken in more than 2.7 million people, followed by Turkey (more than 2.5 million); Pakistan (1.6 million) and Lebanon (more than 1.5 million). The remaining six nations listed in the top 10 each hosted hundreds of thousands of refugees: Iran (979,400); Ethiopia (736,100); Kenya (553,900); Uganda (477,200); Democratic Republic of Congo (383,100), and Chad (369,500). The statistics are based on figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Amnesty said many of the world's wealthiest nations "host the fewest and do the least". "It is not simply a matter of sending aid money. Rich countries cannot pay to keep people 'over there'," it said. The "self-interest" of such countries meant the international refugee crisis was set to get worse, not better, Amnesty claimed. "If every one of the wealthiest countries in the world were to take in refugees in proportion to their size, wealth and unemployment rate, finding a home for more of the world's refugees would be an eminently solvable challenge," said Shetty.

11:30   Urjit Patel's 1st monetary policy review as RBI guv today
Today's monetary policy review will be the first by the six-member MPC as well as Governor Urjit Patel, who as the deputy governor had described the RBI as an owl when it comes to inflation management.

According to the experts, the newly-constituted Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is unlikely to lower rates at its maiden policy review as it awaits more supporting data on inflation

According to Bank of Maharashtra Managing Director and Chief Executive R P Marathe Experts "don't think the Reserve Bank is going to change rates as inflation -- both WPI and CPI -- have not softened much' August retail inflation eased to a five-month low of 5.05 per cent but WPI inflation climbed to a two-year high of 3.74 per cent.

Before the dip in August, both the retail as well as wholesale price indices were on a continuous upward spiral The government had in August notified 4 per cent inflation target with a range of plus/minus 2 per cent for the next five years under the monetary policy framework agreement with the Reserve Bank.

Patel was the one who wrote the inflation glide path for RBI when he was deputy to former Governor Rajan, and analysts say it is unlikely that he will jettison his guard on price rise, especially under the new inflation targeting framework.

"RBI is unlikely to cut rate this time," Union Bank of India Chairman and Managing Director Arun Tiwari said. On his policy expectations from the new Governor, he said Patel may announce "some more measures related to resolution of non-performing assets'

Members of the Armys crack commandos who carried out surgical strikes in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) are likely to fly down to the national capital in the coming days and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi who wants to personally congratulate the team, reports the Economic Times.

The ET reports that the troops are likely to be invited to New Delhi in the coming days as per the schedule and availability of Modi, who has closely monitored the entire operation from conceptualisation to the public announcement by the Director General of Military Operations on September 23.

The prime minister has so far maintained silence on the surgical strikes.

He had also quietly met soldiers of the 21 Para Special Forces last year, days after they executed cross-border operations in Myanmar to take down militant training camps.

Close to 50 troops had crossed into Myanmar to target insurgent camps after an Army convoy was targeted in Chandel, killing 18 troops.

10:22   Meet the real-life Revenant
What should you do after you've been attacked by a bear -- twice? Put it on Facebook, of course.

That's what Todd Orr did over the weekend, after he was attacked by a grizzly bear in Madison County, Montana, not once but twice. Orr was on an early morning hike on a trail Saturday, scouting for elk. He had just stepped into an open meadow when he was spotted by a bear with cubs on the other end of the meadow.

"I yelled a number of times so she knew I was human and would hopefully turn back. No such luck," he wrote on his Facebook post. "Within a couple seconds, she was nearly on me. I gave her a full charge of bear spray at about 25 feet. Her momentum carried her right through the orange mist and on me."  Read more

10:11   The lines that have been crossed
As the dust settles following the so-called September 29 "surgical strike" which witnessed the publicly acknowledged employment of Indian special forces across the Line of Control (LoC) for the first time in over a decade, it is useful to take stock of the larger implications -- what the operation does and does not mean for India's broader strategic dynamic with Pakistan.

10:02   Economic impact of India-Pak tensions will be marginal: Jaitley
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has expressed confidence that any economic impact arising from recent tensions with Pakistan and incidents like the surgical strikes undertaken by Indian special forces will be "extremely marginal".

Addressing a gathering at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management, Jaitley said that any impact that had been felt on the markets and the rupee had been "temporary", and that foreign direct investment into India "continues to increase".

"Even recently, when the news came that India had made certain surgical strikes at the launch pads where the terrorists used to cross into Indian boundaries, there was obviously a certain amount of speculation as far as the markets were concerned. The impact was not what it would have been years ago," he said. Economic impact arising from recent tensions will be "extremely marginal", he said.

"If you do not believe in climate change, you do not believe in facts, or in science or empirical truths and therefore, in my humble opinion, should not be allowed to hold public office."  Read more

There is renewed uncertainty over election strategist Prashant Kishore's continuation with the Congress. Kishore, who is looking after Congress electoral campaign in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, is said to be disillusioned with the grand old party's style of functioning.

The delay in Rahul Gandhi formally taking over the Congress, AICC treasurer Motilal Vora's reported reluctance in clearing I-PAC bills (Kishore's cross party advocacy group) and the Congress's poor poll prospects in Uttar Pradesh are said to be some key factors responsible for his sense of disillusionment. Villagers in large numbers gathered outside the home of Border Security Force Constable Nitin Kumar's home to pay respects to the fallen soldier.

Kumar lost his life on Monday when terrorists tried to infiltrate a Rashtriya Rifles camp in Baramulla. The plucky 24-year-old from Etawah noticed movement 25 yards ahead of his bunker and immediately got out and made a move towards the intruders.

He and his 'buddy' were then attacked by the terrorist who launched grenades using an Under Barrel Grenade Launcher. The splinters hit Nitin Kumar, injuring him. Seeing this, Constable Parminder took his place, but even he was injured.

09:12   Army wants 6 months to smash terror infrastructure in PoK
Indias armed forces have told the political executive that only a sustained six-month campaign will seriously damage the terror infrastructure in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Armed forces strategists also said a determined campaign is needed to target launch pads for such attacks.

A top army officer said: We have to look at a sustained campaign. The terror network is on the back foot, but to really achieve something, we have to look at a medium-term plan, a six-month campaign. A one-off event will not deter them.

08:36   Will talk only on terror, says Delhi, amid reports that India, Pakistan NSAs have spoken
India has never said no to a dialogue with Pakistan but it will be about stopping terrorism rather than on Jammu and Kashmir, a top official in the government was quoted as saying amid reports from Islamabad that contact has been established between the National Security Advisors of both India and Pakistan.

Indias NSA Ajit Doval and his Pakistani counterpart Nasir Janjua spoke over the phone the first such chat after the Uri attack and the surgical strikes and discussed ways to reduce tension, said Sartaj Aziz, Advisor on Foreign Affairs to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

03:40   Clinton takes the lead once again!
Hillary Clinton emerges from the first presidential debate with a five-point lead over Donald Trump in the race for the presidency, having narrowed the enthusiasm gap between her supporters and Trump's, and holding broad advantages over the Republican nominee as the candidate with the right temperament and preparation for the job, according to a new CNN/ORC poll.

The survey finds Clinton topping Trump 47% to 42% among likely voters with Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson at 7% and Green Party nominee Jill Stein at 2%.

Clinton's boost in the race stems largely from gains on Trump among men (from a 22-point deficit with that group in early September to just a 5-point one now) and sharply increased support from independents, who broke heavily in Trump's favour in the early September poll but now tilt Clinton, 44% to 37%.

01:54   BCCI to cancel ongoing India-New Zealand series?
Reacting to Justice LM Lodha committee's direction to banks to freeze its accounts, a disgruntled BCCI has decided to cancel the ongoing New Zealand series, which has a Test and five ODIs remaining.

According to a senior board official, the board was forced to take this step as its hands were tied.

"We have no option other than to call off the India-New Zealand series as our banks have decided to freeze BCCI accounts. We don't want India to be humiliated in front of the world. How can we function, how can we hold any games now? Who will make the payment? Freezing a bank account is no joke. An international team is here, and there is so much at stake," a top BCCI official said.

The board decided to take this drastic measure on the day the Lodha panel issued a letter to the banks, urging them to not give BCCI access to funds.

"It has come to the notice of this Committee that certain decisions have been taken at the 'Emergent Working Committee' meeting of the BCCI on 30th September 2016 to disburse large funds to the various member associations," the letter stated.

01:08   Hillary slams Trump: 'What kind of genius loses a billion dollars in a single year?'
Hillary Clinton laced into Donald Trump on Monday for living a billionaire's lifestyle while "contributing nothing to our nation," in her first public remarks about a New York Times report that revealed Trump might have avoided paying federal income taxes for close to two decades.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Toledo, Ohio, the Democratic presidential nominee attacked her Republican opponent as representing "the same rigged system that he claims he's going to change."

"While millions of American families, including mine and yours, were working hard and paying our fair share, it seems he was contributing nothing to our nation. Imagine that," Clinton said. "In other words, Trump was taking from America with both hands and leaving the rest of us with the bill."

The Times story, Clinton said, "tells us everything we need to know about how Trump does business."

"Here is my question: What kind of genius loses a billion dollars in a single year?" Clinton said.

00:57   Terrorists planned Uri-type strike in Baramulla: BSF
The Border Security Force has said the terrorists, who attacked a joint camp of the force and the army on Sunday in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, had plans to carry out Uri-type terror strike on the installation and complimented the personnel for foiling their plans.

"Certainly, they had such plans. There is a fence in front of the bunker in the camp. The equipment, like wire-cutter, GPS and compass, have been recovered there, (so), they (terrorists) wanted to cut through the fence and certainly had similar plans like the other (Uri) camp," Additional Director General of BSF Arun Kumar told reporters in Srinagar on Monday.

He was speaking to reporters after offering floral tributes to a BSF jawan who lost his life in the attack in Baramulla on Sunday night.

"Our jawans sacrificed their supreme life to prevent the terrorists from entering the camp. They have done an excellent job," Kumar said.

Giving details of the attack, he said the BSF personnel suspected movement of militants at around 10:30 pm and the jawans challenged them.

"The militants opened fire, which was retaliated by the BSF personnel. Then, it seems, they attacked the bunker with UBGL grenades. Our constable said there were two terrorists but they fled in the night," he said.

Kumar said though there were no specific reports about the movement of terrorists, "there is a possibility of the presence of terrorists at some places, but our forces are alert".

00:37   US suspends talks with Russia on Syria ceasefire
The United States on Monday suspended talks with Russia on trying to end the violence in Syria and accused Moscow of not living up to its commitments under a ceasefire agreement.

The announcement came as Syrian government supported by Iranian-backed militias and Russian air power pounded the rebel-held area of Aleppo, bombing one of the city's main hospitals and badly damaging water supplies.

"The United States is suspending its participation in bilateral channels with Russia that were established to sustain the cessation of hostilities," US State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a statement. "This is not a decision that was taken lightly."

The confirmation that the US-Russian talks on Syria have collapsed suggests that there is little hope, if any, of a diplomatic solution to end the 5-1/2-year-old civil war emerging anytime soon.

It could also trigger deeper US consideration of military options such as providing more sophisticated arms, logistical support, and training to Syrian rebel groups that US officials have said were under consideration, either directly or via Gulf Arab states or Turkey.

00:33   New York AG orders Trump's foundation to stop fundraising in state
The office of New York Attorney General Eric T Schneiderman has issued a "notice of violation" to Donald J Trump's foundation, ordering it to immediately stop soliciting donations in New York.

The letter, which was sent on Friday and released on Monday morning by Schneiderman's office, said that its charities bureau had determined that the Donald J Trump Foundation had been fund-raising in New York this year when it was not registered to do so under state law.

"The Trump Foundation must immediately cease soliciting contributions or engaging in any other fund-raising activities in New York," wrote James Sheehan, the chief of the charities bureau.

Trump's foundation has come under increasing scrutiny amid questions about his fulfillment of large charitable pledges and his lack of financial support in recent years. The foundation's compliance with the rules that govern nonprofit groups has also been a concern.

00:24   DUSU president's picture with guns kicks up row
A photograph of Delhi University Students' Union president Amit Tanwar and few others, showing them 'posing' with guns on the varsity premises, surfaced on social media today, kicking up a row.

NSUI demanded a probe into the matter involving Tanwar, who represents Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad affiliated to the RSS.

University authorities, however, refused to comment.

The pictures were alleged to be from a 'memorial service' for Tanwar's brother, organised in the DUSU office.

Tanwar claimed the guns belonged to "security officers" of one of the guests who had come to pay homage to his "social activist" brother Pradeep.

He claimed the picture was clicked against his wishes.

"At the memorial service, few guests wanted to click a photo and they laid the guns on the table. I refused to get clicked but they went ahead and uploaded them without my knowledge," Tanwar said.

Demanding probe into the matter, NSUI accused ABVP of vitiating the atmosphere of student politics in Delhi University.
