21:22   Turkey extends emergency for 90 days
Turkey will maintain the state of emergency imposed in the wake of July's failed coup for another three months starting from October 19, Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said today.

"The state of emergency will be extended for another 90 days starting October 19," Kurtulmus told a news conference after a weekly cabinet meeting.

The government has launched a vast crackdown to hunt down suspects in the failed putsch, blamed by authorities on US-based Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen.

Gulen, who has lived in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania since 1999, has denied he was involved in the coup bid.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan last week said it may be necessary to keep the state of emergency for at least a year.

19:57   Show evidence of surgical strikes to expose Pak: Congress to govt
The Congress on Monday asked the government to put forth "credible" evidence of last week's surgical strikes, carried out by the army across the Line of Control, to "expose" Pakistan which has denied any such action.
Congress' senior spokesman Anand Sharma also sought to dismiss the claim that the surgical strikes on terrorist launch pads was the first such retaliation by the Indian Army, insisting that it had responded earlier too "as per the need or provocation".
Asked about Aam Aadmi Party's demand that the Centre put out a video of the surgical strikes, Sharma said Congress does "not have slightest doubt" about what the Director General of Military Operations said after the operation.
At the same time, he said, Pakistan is attempting to mislead its people by claiming that no such attack had taken place. In this backdrop, it would be necessary for the Prime Minister to "expose" Pakistan by putting forth credible evidence about the surgical strikes on the intervening night of September 28 and 29.
The announcement about the action was made by DGMO Lt Gen Ranbir Singh at a press conference in New Delhi.
"The government must expose Pakistan's denial. It has all the tools and instruments to do so," he said, adding the Modi dispensation has backing of the entire political leadership.

He said that the Indian Army had carried out such strikes in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013. The only difference this time was that the government of the day has taken the "political ownership", he said.

IS issued a statement claiming the attack, saying it targeted Shiite Muslims whom the Sunni extremist group considers to be heretics.

IS overran large areas north and west of Baghdad in 2014, and while the jihadists have since lost significant ground, they retain the capacity to carry out frequent attacks in government-held areas.

Russia on Monday came out in support of India's surgical strikes across the Line of Control, saying every country has the right to defend itself, the first P-5 country to back New Delhi openly.

"Greatest human rights violations take place when terrorists attack military installations and attack peaceful civilians in India. We welcome the surgical strike. Every country has right to defend itself," Russian ambassador to India Alexander M Kadakin said.

He also mentioned that Uri terrorists came from Pakistan.

Russia was the only country to say in plain words that terrorists came from Pakistan, Kadakin said, asking Islamabad to put an end to cross-border terror.

The Russian ambassador made the comments in an interview to CNN News 18.

The surgical strikes were in response to an attack on an army base in Uri in northern Kashmir that left 19 soldiers dead.

18:38   Boxing champion Tyson Fury retires
World heavyweight champion Tyson Fury announced he was retiring from boxing in a profanity-laced tweet on Monday.

"Boxing is the saddest thing I ever took part in, all a pile of s***, I'm the greatest, & I'm also retired... " Fury tweeted.

Reports by US broadcaster ESPN last week claimed Fury had tested positive for cocaine and the British fighter had recently cancelled an October bout with Wladimir Klitschko to defend his WBA and WBO heavyweight belts.

The 28-year-old had been scheduled to earn the biggest purse of his career in a rematch with Klitschko at the Manchester Arena after shocking the Ukrainian last November to become world champion.

However, Fury withdrew from that date as his camp claimed he had been "declared mentally unfit to fight".

ESPN reported Fury tested positive after providing a urine sample to Las Vegas-based Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) in Lancaster, England on September 22.

Cocaine, while an illegal drug, is not banned in boxing if taken out of competition.

17:56   Haji Ali Trust moves SC against HC order allowing entry to women
Haji Ali Dargah Trust has approached the Supreme Court, challenging the Bombay high court which had allowed women in the internal portion of the Dargah.

On August 26, the Bombay high court lifted the ban imposed on women from entering the inner sanctum of Mumbai's Haji Ali Dargah Noorjehan Fiaz and Zakia Soman, founders of Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan, had petitioned the Bombay high court against the ban calling it unconstitutional.

The 2011 ban violates the women's right to freedom of religion enshrined in Article 25 of the constitution.

The PIL stated that gender justice is inherent in the Quran, and there is no prohibition on women visiting graves.Prior to 2011, the Dargah did not discriminate against women and allowed free entry of people across religions.

On March 2011, the Dargah's board of trustees imposed a ban on women's entry, calling it a 'grievous sin'.

It is a sin as per Islam for women to be in close proximity of a male Muslim saint's grave.

On Jul 10, 2015, Bench headed by Justice V M Kanade sets aside previous order framing eight questions by an earlier bench of HC on maintainability and decided to hear PIL on merits.

Earlier this year, Muslim women across Mumbai staged protests to lift the ban against women's entry in the Dargah.

They demanded that women should be allowed to pray in the sanctum of the famous shrine, but the clerics called their demands 'un-Islamic'.

15:31   So, what is autophagy?
This is what autophagy means, according to the Nobel Foundation:

We now know that autophagy controls important physiological functions where cellular components need to be degraded and recycled. Autophagy can rapidly provide fuel for energy and building blocks for renewal of cellular components, and is therefore essential for the cellular response to starvation and other types of stress. After infection, autophagy can eliminate invading intracellular bacteria and viruses. Autophagy contributes to embryo development and cell differentiation. Cells also use autophagy to eliminate damaged proteins and organelles, a quality control mechanism that is critical for counteracting the negative consequences of ageing. Disrupted autophagy has been linked to Parkinson's disease, type 2 diabetes and other disorders that appear in the elderly. Mutations in autophagy genes can cause genetic disease. Disturbances in the autophagic machinery have also been linked to cancer. Intense research is now ongoing to develop drugs that can target autophagy in various diseases."

15:20   Japanese cell biologist wins Nobel Medicine
Just in: The 2016 Nobel Prize for Medicine awarded to Yoshinori Ohsumi for his discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy. Ohsumi is a Japanese cell biologist specializing in autophagy. He is a professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology 's Frontier Research Center. He received the Kyoto Prize for Basic Science in 2012.

Autophagy is a process by which cellular components are captured into organelles called autophagosomes and then brought to the lysosome or vacuole to be broken down and recycled for other uses. It frequently comes into play during starvation, allowing cells to survive periods of privation.

The judges for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine are selected by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm.

This follows specifications made by Alfred Nobel in his 1895 will, which stated which institutions should select the winners. The Royal Swedish Academy of sciences got the physics and chemistry awards and the Swedish Academy got the literature prize.

The peace prize was given to a panel selected by the parliament of neighbouring Norway, which was ruled in union with Sweden at the time.

Officials said BSF held a flag meeting with the Pakistani Rangers after the 50-minute ceremony ended.

"There was sloganeering and unruly conduct by the spectators from the Pakistani side. There were some reports about pelting of stones also... We called a flag meeting with the Rangers and told them about the issue," a senior BSF official said.

The situation during the flag lowering ceremony was apparently quite tense.

08:08   Ceasefire violation by Pak rangers along border in Gurdaspur
Even as army and BSF jawans combed the area in Baramulla, Kashmir after being attacked by terrorists, Pakistani Rangers violated the ceasefire along the border in Gurdaspur, Punjab.

According to TV reports, the BSF post in Gurdaspur's Chakri village reportedly attacked by the Pakistani Rangers.

The ceasefire violations come just barely four days after India carried out surgical strikes across the Line of Control and took out seven terror launch pads in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

A day after the surgical strike, Pakistan had violated the ceasefire in Jammu-Kashmir's Akhnoor area where they carried out small arms and mortar shelling.

The firing along the Punjab border comes after Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval spoke to his Pakistani counterpart and agreed to reduce tensions on the LoC.

05:52   Terrorists hit Baramulla Army camp in midnight strike, one jawan killed
One Border Seurity Force jawan was killed while another was injured when terrorists targeted a BSF and adjoining Army camps in Baramulla on Sunday night , barely four days after the Indian Special Forces smashed seven terror launch pads during a surgical strike across the Line of Control.

The terrorists, who gained entry into the 46 RR camp through an adjoining BSF camp, fired indiscriminately and lobbed grenades as well. During the firing, two BSF jawans were injured and were rushed to the nearby hospital, officials said, adding one of the personnel succumbed to injuries on the operation table.

The spokesperson for Srinagar-based XV corps, Col Rajesh Kalia, said terrorists fired at an Army camp at Jabanzpora in Baramulla and the firing was still on. The skies in Baramulla, 54 km from Srinagar, saw illuminators being fired by the Army to locate the terrorists who had sneaked into the 46 battalion of Rashtriya Rifles.

Sources said there was some firing from adjacent houses located near the camp, which is located on the banks of river Jhelum. However, the official Twitter handle of Udhampur-based Northern Command said, 'Baramulla incident situation contained and under control'.

The attack comes despite intelligence inputs about possible terrorist attacks on security installations in Jammu and Kashmir after the Indian Army carried out surgical strikes on September 29.

Senior BSF officials reached the spot, while BSF director general K K Sharma briefed Home Minister Rajnath Singh about the incident.

The strike comes two weeks after terrorists hit the Army brigade headquarters at Uri, killing 19 soldiers.
