The opposition parties launched nationwide protests on Monday against the Centre's move to ban Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes.

While the Congress said that there is no call for a strike and only protests will be held, the Left parties have called a 12-hour bandh in Bengal. The bandh, however, is not supported by the ruling Trinamool Congress which is otherwise very vocal in protesting the note ban.

"We have not called for 'Bharat Bandh', as it causes inconvenience to people. We called for Jan Akrosh Divas," Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party workers staged protest in Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh and in Bihar's Darbhanga, Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist workers stopped a train. -- ANI
