23:45   First commercial US-Havana flight lands as country mourns
Passengers erupted into applause as the first commercial flight from the United States to Havana in more than 50 years landed in Cuba, arriving as the island begins week-long memorial services for revolutionary leader
Fidel Castro.
Cubans saluted the packed American Airlines flight by spraying water from firetrucks above the plane as it taxed along the runway at Jose Marti International Airport in honor of the inaugural voyage.
"It was very emotional for me," said Jonathan Gonzalez, 31, a Cuban-American born in Miami who said it was his third time visiting the island.
Passengers wearing straw hats provided by American Airlines with the word "Cuba" on the back were greeted with welcome signs in various languages but no music.
The visitors are arriving at the same time that tens of thousands begin paying homage to Castro in Havana and a state-sanctioned ban on live music has hushed the capital's usually festive nightlife.
"I'm intrigued to see how the city is after the death of Fidel Castro," said Tamara Cara, 45, an education professional from Puerto Rico on the flight.

23:25   RBI relaxes withdrawal limit of cash from bank deposits
To encourage people to deposit valid currency notes in banks, RBI today said bank customers would be able to withdraw deposits made in current legal tender notes beyond the current limits, a move aimed at increasing
currency circulation in system.

For example, if someone deposits valid legal tenders (Rs 2,000, Rs 500, Rs 100, Rs 50, Rs 20, Rs 10, Rs 5) of Rs 4,000, the withdrawal limit for that person would rise by Rs 4,000 over and above weekly withdrawal limit of Rs 24,000.

For current accounts, the withdrawal limit is Rs 50,000 a week for small traders.

In a late evening circular, the Reserve Bank said that it has been reported that "certain depositors are hesitating" to deposit their monies into bank accounts in view of the current limits on cash withdrawals from accounts.

"As it is impeding active circulation of currency notes,  it has been decided, on careful consideration, to allow withdrawals of deposits made in current legal tender notes on or after November 29, 2016 beyond the current limits;

"Preferably, available higher denominations bank notes of Rs 2000 and Rs 500 are to be issued for such withdrawals," the Reserve Bank said.

20:32   Demonetisation forces postponement of Pro Wrestling League
Demonetisation seems to have hit the sporting arena as well with the second edition of Pro Wrestling League being postponed from its original scheduled start of December 15 as the franchises and stakeholders need more time to re-plan and re-structure their schemes.

"Post demonetisation, the PWL franchises and the stakeholders have asked for time to re-structure and re-plan their schemes. Hence, the date of the League had to be
postponed," the promoters of the PWL, Pro Sportify director Vishal Gurnani said.

"The revised dates would be announced on November 30th," he added.

Meanwhile, the sources claimed that the PWL-2 is likely to begin not before the last week of December.

"The League will be re-scheduled to the last week of December. Also the players' auction, which was supposed to be held in mid-November, will now take place 15 days prior to the commencement of the tournament," the source said.

20:07   IAF's big boys airlifted over 160 tons of banknotes since Nov 19
The IAF has airlifted over 160 tonnes of new currency notes from four printing presses to various parts of the country to cut down the time taken to transport cash from the source to main distribution centres to meet the surge in demand post demonetisation.

Sources said the Indian Air Force was pressed into service on November 19 and it deployed AN 32, C130 J and C17 transport aircraft and helicopters for this purpose.

"Helicopters were already used for transporting cash to some remote areas of the Northeast. But the use of transport aircraft is a new thing," a source said.

The government roped in the IAF to cut down the transportation time for the delivery of banknotes after a shortage was felt in the market because of demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

19:52   Bandh decision wrong, admits Left Front
The Left Front was left red-faced as its 12-hour strike in West Bengal to protest the Centre's demonetisation of high-denomination currency notes today failed to evoke much response from the people, with front chairman Biman Bose acknowledging that the "thought" behind it was wrong.

"We thought that the people would understand the reason behind the strike. The thought we had was not right; it was wrong. We have understood this. We will take lessons from it in the future. We will discuss it at the party meetings," he candidly told reporters.

However, Bose argued that the strike was called at a "very short notice".

"We hope the people will understand next month why we had called the strike. Banks, ATMs are out of money, so how will they run their families in the days to come? It is a complex issue which the people will understand from their personal experiences," he said.

The strike was announced by the Left parties at 8 pm on November 25 after an urgent meeting called by the front. It failed to evoke much response since government and private buses, trams and other modes of transport, including private vehicles, were seen plying on the roads normally, while most of the shops and markets remained open.

19:21   Kerala food vendor shaves half his head to protest demonetisation
A 70-year-old fast-food vendor in Kerala has decided to protest in a unique manner against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's sudden move to render Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes worthless.

Yahiya, a native of Kadakkal Mukkunnam in Kerala's Kollam district, has shaved off half his head and has vowed not to grow his hair back until Modi is voted out of power.

In a Facebook post, Dr Ashraf Kadakkal, an assistant professor at University of Kerala, narrates the 70-year-old vendor's plight.

Before Prime Minister Modi announced his 'surgical strike' against black money, Yahiya said he had Rs 23,000 in cash -- all in the form of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

He didn't know what to do with the demonetised notes.

"I tried my best to get it exchanged from nearby banks, stood in queues for two days," he said, recounting his ordeal. "On the second day, blood sugar level dropped and I almost collapsed."

Yahiya only has a loan account at a co-operative bank. "Since all transactions at co-operative banks were frozen, I realised I cannot get it deposited anywhere," he explained.

After the 70-year-old returned home from the hospital, he lit his choolah and burnt the entire Rs 23,000 in it.

He then went to a nearby barber shop and had the hair on half his head shaved off.

"I vow to grow it back only when Prime Minister Modiji, the man who, in a jiffy, burnt all my hard work and savings into ashes, is voted out of power and this country is saved," the semi-tonsured food vendor then proclaimed.

18:46   Rupee drops to new 2016 low, ends at 68.76
The rupee today tumbled by 30 paise to end at a fresh 2016 low of 68.76 due to deteriorating sentiment in the midst of worsening impact of fund outflows.

Frantic dollar demand from corporates along with aggressive hedging strategy adopted by importers in the wake of currency volatility predominately took a toll on domestic unit despite moves by the central bank to stabilise the currency.

Massive funds outflows in the wake of impending US Fed rate hike and a bullish dollar overseas have hit the rupee sentiment, a forex dealer commented.

Ongoing redemption pressure on foreign currency non-resident deposits also aided to the rupee woes, the dealer said further.

At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market, the local unit opened modestly higher at 68.42 from last Friday's closing value of 68.46.

However, the initial positive momentum failed to gain ground with the currency retreating sharply to hit a intraday low of 68.80 before ending at 68.76 - its lowest closing level so far this year - showing a steep loss of 30 paise, 0.44 per cent.

The rupee has shed 3.95 per cent of its value since the beginning of 2016.

The rupee had plunged to a record low of 68.8650 in day trade last Thursday before recovering on RBI intervention to settle at 68.74 -- the lowest level in 39 months.

17:59   Balochistan court issues arrest warrant against Musharraf
The Balochistan high court today issued a bailable arrest warrant against former Pakistani dictator Gen Pervez Musharraf in a case pertaining to the alleged murder of former Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti in a military operation in 2006.

A divisional bench of the Balochistan high court passed the order during hearing of review petition challenging acquittal of the 73-year-old former president by an Anti-Terrorism Court in the case, Dawn reported.

Justice Jamal Mandokhail and Justice Zaheeruddin Kakar heard a review petition filed by Nawabzada Jamil Bugti, the son of Akbar Bugti.

The counsel of Musharraf, Akhtar Shah pleaded to the court that although his client respects the court, he cannot appear before the court due to "security reasons".

However, Bugti's lawyer complained that despite repeated orders, the former president Pervez Musharraf has failed to appear before the court.

The court ordered that the administration should ensure adequate security to Musharraf while he appears in court.

Pakistan government had allowed Musharraf to go abroad in March this year for medical treatment.

Baloch leader Nawab Akbar Bugti was killed in an operation in Balochistan's rugged mountains of Taratani in Kohlu district on August 26, 2006.

Actress Shilpa Shetty is being hilariously trolled on Twitter after someone posted a news item in which it was revealed that she thinks George Orwell's Animal Farm is children's fiction.

The actress was quoted by an English daily in which she said that reading the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter will cultivate the imagination and creativity of the children to a large extent. Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on Monday sought to correct the negative public perfection that black money is pumped into films, and said the industry is likely to benefit from demonetisation.
