23:46   Protecting Trump costs New York City over $1 million a day
Protecting President-elect Donald Trump and his family is costing New York City more than $1 million a day, according to three top city officials.
And those costs will not necessarily drop significantly once he moves to the White House because Melania Trump and their 10-year old son Barron expect to stay at their home at Trump Tower in midtown Manhattan, at least until the end of the school year.
Trump has indicated he plans to return home regularly, especially while the family is still in New York.

Adding to the expense is the cost of police assigned to Trump's adult children and his grandchildren, who are also receiving Secret Service protection, John Miller, NYPD's deputy commissioner of intelligence & counter-terrorism, told WCBS channel.
All of them live in the city, and all are entitled to receive Secret Service protection.
"The number one imperative here is safety and security. We owe that to the president elect, his family and his team," said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said last week.
But he said the city will need help with those costs, particularly police overtime, CNN reported.
"This is a very substantial undertaking. It will take substantial resources," he said. "We will begin the conversation with the federal government shortly on reimbursement for the NYPD for some of the costs that we are
incurring."

23:44   NCP's loss in MLC polls shows anger against its leaders: Maha Congress
The results of the Legislative Council elections in Maharashtra which the NCP has lost three seats showed the extent of "resentment" against leadership of that party across the state, senior Congress leader and former
Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said.
"We were aware of the ground realities regarding resentment against the NCP leadership. We won despite being in deficit of 130 votes. We won 65 votes more than NCP. Because of the adamant stand of its leaders the NCP lost three seats Whereas BJP, Shiv Sena and Congress won additional seat each," Chavan told PTI.
The Sharad Pawar-led party suffered a setback in the polls held on Saturday for six seats in the Legislative Council from as many local bodies. The results were declared today.
Chavan said Congress had told NCP to keep Pune and give Sangli-Satara seat from western Maharashtra to us. "We had proposed that NCP should give Yavatmal and keep Bhandara-Gondia, but they refused," he said.
"I urged (Congress vice-president) Rahul Gandhi to prevail upon our state unit chief AShok Chavan that Congress should accept alliance only if we get to contest three seats. Finally, decisions are made in Delhi. Rahul too said that Congress should go alone if the demand for three seats is not accepted," the ex-CM said.
In a blow, NCP could win only one of the four seats it held earlier during the biennial elections. The NCP retained only Pune local bodies seat while Congress retained Nanded and wrested Sangli-Satara local bodies constituency from NCP.

His relatives informed the police that Sumesara used to work as a casual labourer in the past. However, after suffering two heart attacks, he gave up working. His 21-year-old son Ajay works at a factory in GIDC area in Rajkot.

Police investigation has revealed that Sumesara was depressed as he failed to arrange money for his daughters marriage next month.

12:23   Convey your views on note ban to PM via his app
Amid opposition attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today asked the people to directly convey their views to him on demonetisation via his App.

He asked the public to participate in a survey where a number of questions have been posed with regard to scrapping of old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes.

'I want your first-hand view on the decision taken regarding currency notes. Take part in the survey on the NM App,' he said in a tweet.

The prime minister posed questions like, Do you have any suggestions/ideas or insights you would like to share with PM Narendra Modi.

Some of the other questions asked include, 'Do you think black money exists in India?' 'Do you think the evil of corruption and black money need to be fought and eliminated?' 'What do you think of government's move of banning old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes?'

The prime minister's move to gauge the views of the people comes at a time when the opposition has escalated its attack on the issue of demonetisation.

11:54   SC dumps Kejriwal's plea; defamation cases against Delhi CM to continue
The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that the trial in the defamation case filed by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will continue.

Kejirwal had contented that proceedings before the trial court should be stayed since a civil suit was pending before the high court.

The Delhi High Court had on October 19 dismissed his plea seeking stay of trial court proceedings in a criminal defamation case, saying, there was no "illegality" in continuing it simultaneously with a civil defamation suit in the high court.

The high court had said there was "no prejudice" on account of a pending civil suit and there was no "double jeopardy" and as such Mr Kejriwal's plea was "devoid of merit". It had said the criminal and civil defamation cases were "different in nature".

Regarding the challenge to the magisterial court's May 19 order, dismissing his plea to grant a stay on proceedings due to pendency of a civil suit, the high court had said that the trial court order was "free from perversity, impropriety, illegality and non-sustainability".

Jaitley had also filed a criminal defamation complaint in a lower court against Kejriwal and five other AAP leaders for allegedly defaming him in the Delhi & District Cricket Association controversy.

11:48   PM prefers to sit in his Parliament chamber than attend debate: Congress
Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad on Tuesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi needs to stop addressing public meetings and be present in parliament to address the concerns of the opposition and the 130 crore Indian citizens.

"The Prime Minister comes to Parliament, sits in his chamber, but doesn't attend either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha, which is a matter of concern not just for the opposition, but also for the 130 crore people of this country. After all, we want to know the reason why the prime minister does want to come to both houses, but feels free in giving speeches outside parliament," Azad said.

"We said the opposition is ready for a discussion, but a prime minister who is addressing public rallies on daily basis, should at least be present in the house," he added.

Azad further said, "The prime minister should have cancelled his public meeting after he got news of the Kanpur train tragedy. He should have thought that such a big accident had taken place and rescue operations to save passengers' lives were still on. But, the Prime Minister commenced his meeting as he was more worried about abusing the opposition, rather than saving passengers."

11:02   India test fires Agni-I ballistic missile from Odisha coast
India on Tuesday successfully test-fired indigenously built nuclear-capable intermediate range Agni-I ballistic missile from Odisha coast.

The indigenously-built, intermediate range missile is capable of hitting a target 700 kms away and was a part of a user trial by the Army.

The surface-to-surface, single-stage missile, powered by solid propellants, was test-fired from a mobile launcher from the Integrated Test Range.

Agni-I missile is equipped with sophisticated navigation system which ensures it reaches the target with a high degree of accuracy and precision.

The missile, which has already been inducted into armed forces, has proved its excellent performance in terms of range, accuracy and lethality.

Weighing 12 tonnes, the 15-metre-long Agni-I, is designed to carry a payload of more than one tonne. Its strike range can be extended by reducing the payload.

Security forces neutralised two terrorists in an encounter on Tuesday in Bandipora, Jammu and Kashmir.

The Army and the police in a joint operation had cordoned off the area to smoke out the two terrorists who were holed up and had opened fire, thus engaging in a heavy gunbattle early in the morning.

A combing operation is underway to ensure no untoward elements are still present in the area.

Earlier, a BSF head constable was killed and three other army men were injured in the early hours of Monday after Pakistani Army resorted to heavy cross-border firing in Rajouri sector of Jammu and Kashmir.

09:54   SC to hear plea seeking ban on Sikh jokes
The Supreme Court will today hear a petition filed by advocate Harvinder Choudhry seeking a ban on jokes against the Sikh community.

Choudhary had contended that such jokes portray the Sikh community in negative light and wants such websites, which disseminate such 'insensitive' jokes, to be prosecuted under laws that carry a prison term of six months to five years.

The petitioner argued that such jokes on many social network websites portray Sikhs as "unintelligent", "foolish" and "naive", making them an easy target of ridicule and racial abuse.

Choudhary, herself belonging to a Sikh family, said that she too had been a target of ridicule and abuse because of such jokes.

The Supreme Court has asked an expert panel headed by former apex court judge H S Bedi to submit draft guidelines so that appropriate orders can be passed to prevent circulation of sardar jokes on websites.

Yadav, an UPA-appointee, managed to complete his full term but faced tough time when he was accused of rigging a forest guard recruitment test conducted by Vyavsayik Pariksha Mandal or MP Professional Examination Board, popularly called Vyapam, in 2015.

Madhya Pradesh Police's Special Task Force, which earlier probed the recruitment and admission scandal, had booked Yadav for alleged fraud and other criminal offences.

Thereafter, Yadav moved the Madhya Pradesh High Court for quashing the FIR against him.

In May 2015, the high court quashed the FIR against him, holding he enjoyed immunity against prosecution while in office.

08:23   Demonetisation: 'Petty fortunes are being targeted'
Describing the Indian government's demonetisation steps as the "most sweeping changes in currency policy in the world in decades", a top global economist has said without new measures, this is "unlikely to have lasting benefits" and that it has resulted in "chaos and loss of trust in the government".

"Like everyone else, we were surprised by the dramatic action taken by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to demonetise the existing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes. This is by far the most sweeping change in currency policy that has occurred anywhere in the world in decades," Lawrence 'Larry' Summers, a former chief economist of the World Bank and ex-economic advisor to the US President, said in a blog.

In his blog, Summers said most free societies would rather let several criminals go free than convict an innocent man.

"In the same way, for the government to expropriate from even a few innocent victims who, for one reason or another, do not manage to convert their money, is highly problematic," the blog said.

"We strongly suspect that those with the largest amount of ill-gotten gain do not hold their wealth in cash but instead, have long since converted it into foreign exchange, gold, bitcoin or some other store of value. So it is petty fortunes, not the hugest and most problematic ones, that are being targeted," Summers wrote.

08:17   Tsunami hits Japan after strong 6.9 quake
A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit northeastern Japan on Tuesday, triggering tsunamis along the coast including a one-metre (3.3-foot) wave that crashed ashore at the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant.

The quake struck on Tuesday morning at about 06:00 local time (2:30 am IST on Tuesday), the Japan Meteorological Agency said, adding that the epicentre of the quake, which was felt in Tokyo, was off the coast of Fukushima prefecture at a depth of about 25km, the agency said.

A 60cm (2ft) tsunami was observed at Fukushima's Onahama Port and a 1.4 meter (4.5ft) tsunami at Sendai shortly after the quake, according to public broadcaster NHK.

"We saw high waves but nothing that went over the tidal barriers," a man in the city of Iwaki told the NTV television network.

00:32   Will Trump offer Tulsi Gabbard a top administration post?
US President-elect Donald Trump met with Tulsi Gabbard, stoking speculation that the prominent Bernie Sanders ally could join Trumps administration.

Trumps transition team has said he is meeting with candidates for administration positions as well as people who can provide ideas and counsel. Gabbard, who voted for Clinton on November 8 after serving as a key surrogate for Sanders, shares some positions with Trump, including opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

A spokesman for Trump declined to say whether Gabbard is under consideration for a position. She obviously has a very distinguished track record. But it would be a little premature to start putting out specific potential administration positions, said Jason Miller.

00:01   India among lowest 4 countries in number of rapes: Maneka
India is among the lowest four countries in terms of number of rapes but almost every incident is reported by the media, Union minister Maneka Gandhi said today.

She also said that the government has a zero-tolerance policy towards rape.

However, her statement drew flak from lawyer Vrinda Grover who asked if she is "denying sexual violence is pervasive and widespread in India".

Gandhi said, "I went to Sweden two years ago when because of Nirbhaya incident, cases were being
reported everyday. Someone said to me that no one wanted to travel to India.

"I actually took a look at a table. In the world, we are among the lowest four countries in the area of rape. Sweden is number one. I said in your country it is not reported in the newspapers. Whereas we have zero tolerance (towards rape) and our newspapers will write about it everyday," she said.
"In fact, according to data collated by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes, Sweden recorded second highest number of sexual crimes - 63.5 per 100,000 inhabitants - in 2010. This is the highest for any European country.

"Botswana was the worst at 92.9 rapes per 1,00,000 people. The figure for Sweden is also more than 30 times the number in India, which recorded 1.8 offences per 1,00,000 people," Maneka said.
