21:24   Turkish airstrikes kill 18 Islamic State terrorists in air strikes
Turkey's military killed 18 Islamic State terrorists in northern Syria over the last 24 hours, the army said, intensifying strikes against the militant group.

Four buildings and one vehicle used by the Islamic State fighters were destroyed in the strikes, an army statement said.

Separately, five Turkey-backed rebels and five Islamic State militants were killed in clashes on the ground, the army said in its statement. In addition, it said coalition forces conducted six air strikes which killed another 10 Islamic State militants.

Turkey is backing a group of Syrian Arabs and Turkmen in northern Syria in its Euphrates Shield operation, which has swept Islamic State from its southern border.

The hardline Sunni group claimed responsibility for a car bomb attack in the Turkish southeastern city of Diyarbakir that killed 11 last week.

20:45   Woman declares sex sanction against husband after he voted for Trump
An American woman has announced 30 days of sex sanctions against her husband.

Appealing to the global community on Reddit, the husband in question related the events since Tuesday but stopped short of calling them the actions of a rogue, or hostile spouse.

The husband also argued that such a sanction was not how sex ought to be used, and that by reducing access to it was he being subjected to a 'control move on her part'.

Critics of the sanctions are likely to view them as disproportionate and could have significant impact on the population.

Fears of a 'domino effect' against the 60 million other Trump voters from their spouse is causing a stir in other households.

20:15   Robert De Niro on Trump victory: 'I feel like I did when 9/11 happened'
De Niro has had a lot to say during and in the aftermath of the US elections. First describing how he would like to punch Mr Trump in the face and then declaring he would no longer like to do so, the Raging Bull actor's palpable confusion embodies the disbelief felt across America.

He said he felt as disturbed as he did learning the Twin Towers in New York had been attacked by terrorists. His struggle to comprehend the surreal situation America finds itself was clear.

"I feel like I did when the World Trade Centre was attacked. I'm waiting to see. I'm stunned. We're gonna see. I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt. We'll see what happens.

"This was about world order, doing things, trying to work our way through a lot of problems internationally and domestically and you need a grown up for that. We'll see. We're all waiting, we're watching."

18:46   In cash hungry India, many line up -- but to help out
Endless queues, chaos and agitated crowd -- scenes outside most banks and ATMs across the country as millions rush to exchange and deposit discontinued currency. But amidst the hassled crowd are some who have tried to ease this transition by helping strangers at a time of need.

To deal with the heavy rush, some banks have asked retired staff to help ease the load on bank employees -- and they readily agreed.

"I was called by the regional head to go and assist one of the nearest branches, so I came here," said Shankar Rao, a retired employee of the Bank of Baroda in Bengaluru.

17:36   What a Trump presidency could mean for LGBT Americans
The election of Donald Trump and running mate Mike Pence set off panic in gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities across the country, as people worried which of their divisive campaign promises would come true.

Would the President-elect make good on his pledge to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which protects transgender people from discrimination in accessing health care? Will he appoint conservative judges to the US Supreme Court who could roll back marriage equality and other civil rights? Will Pence's long-ago support for so-called "conversion therapy" translate to a directive for LGBT youth?

17:04   Modi's Twitter handle springs back after losing 3 lakh followers in a day
There is no beating Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media. So while there was a backlash on his twitter handle @narendramodi soon after the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes was announced, his number of followers has bounced back to keep the growth trajectory consistent. As per Twitter analytics tool TwitterCounter.com, on November 8, when the Prime Minister came on national television to announced that Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes will cease to be legal tender after midnight, he had 24,120,043 followers.

However, next day he lost 3,13,312 followers, taking his overall follower count to 23,806,731. This fall is unprecedented as the @narendramodi handle has been on a roll ever since he started campaigning for Indias top elected post.

But it seems his clout in the social media circles turned the tide within 24 hours. By November 10, the number spiked back growing by 4,30,128 new followers to negate the effects of the fall a day before. The daily average new followers for this handle is just above 27,000. By November 11, the numbers were once again showing a regular growth trajectory.

In fact, @narendramodi is the 46th most popular handle in Twitterverse with 24,256,662 followers, 19,803 of which came on November 11. Modis handle has so far posted 13,241 tweets and follows 1,431 other handles, including a lot of top global leaders.

Rock star Sting will on Saturday reopen the Bataclan, the revered Paris concert hall where extremists massacred 90 people, with a hugely symbolic show to mark the first anniversary of France's bloodiest terror attacks.

Scores of survivors of the Bataclan assault -- the worst of the gun and suicide attacks across the city that night which left 130 dead -- will attend the concert, the dominant event in a weekend of otherwise low-key commemorations.

On Friday, November 13, 2015, a night of horror began with three suicide bombers who blew themselves up outside the Stade de France national stadium.

15:40   Calibrating ATMs for new currency notes will take time: Jaitley
As people line up outside banks and ATMs to deposit the now-illegal Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley held a meeting with the heads of several banks, including SBI and PNB.

Following the media, he is addressing the media on the currency ban.

>> The currency replacement around the country is being continuously monitored

>> I want to thank especially the people of the country who have gone to the banks for currency replacement, as there is several times the usual crowd at banks, but they have maintained order, and the banking employees are managing the action, along with the usual duties well

>> It is a massive operation and it has just started

>> It was expected that there will be some difficulty for the first few days as 86 per cent currency is changed

>> Today, till 12:15 pm, SBI alone has made 2 crore 28 lakh transactions in two and a half days after the scheme was announced

>> This kind of currency replacement can't happen overnight, it takes time

>> The ATMs have not been re-calibrated for new Rs. 2000 currency note; the process is on

>> If we had recalibrated ATMs earlier, we couldn't have maintained the secrecy

>> And since the new notes are of different size, it will take time to recalibrate the ATMs to them

14:53   Did a Gujarati newspaper predict demonetisation move back in April?

14:33   Mamata pens Bengali poem to slam Modi's decision to scrap banknotes
Renewing her attack on the Modi government for demonetisation of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today demanded withdrawal of this "black" political decision saying it is against the common people.

"Withdraw this 'black' political decision which is anti-commoner. Markets across India ruined, purchasing power crashing, people pained," she tweeted.

She also posted a 32-line Bengali poem on the move.

Banerjee hit out at an unnamed ruler an apparent reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who announced the dramatic move Tuesday evening.

The Trinamool chief calls the ruler an autocrat and asked whether he is deaf to the agony of the workers who are suffering as a direct outcome of his decision.

Be ready for a triple talaq from those who lost all following your decision, she writes in the last two lines that appear to be a warning for the BJP ahead of crucial assembly polls next year.

13:37   Why govts demonetisation move may fail to win the war against black money
The demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 banknotes is unlikely to help the government suck out black money from the economy as hoarders keep a tiny portion of their ill-gotten wealth in hard cash, going by income-tax data.

Cash recovery has been less than six per cent of the undisclosed income seized from tax evaders.

12:31   In Rs 500 note crunch, Delhi cabbie's message to passenger goes viral
PM Modi's demonetisation move may be hailed by many for its efforts against black money. However, a post speaking of a cabbie's reaction has gone viral with over 27,000 reactions.

New Delhi-based Viplav Arora booked a cab to take him to the railway station. Since he only had Rs 500 notes with him, he chose an online transaction to pay for the ride. "But somehow my bill for ride was little over the amount I had in Ola money and rest of amount I was supposed to pay to driver in cash," he says on Facebook.

With ATMs not working, Arora was in a fix. He also knew no one would exchange the note for a smaller amount. That's when his driver said the most wonderful thing.

"Sir, baaki ke paise rehne dijiye, do paise kam kama lenge, thodi si takleef hogi or vo to sab ko ho rhi hai, ab sarkaar ke faisley ka samaan krte hue, desh ki tarakki me ye hamara yogdaan hi samajh lenge. Aap befikr hokar apni train lijiye. (Sir, please let the rest of the amount be. It's alright if I earn a little less. It's only a bit of trouble, not much more than what everybody else is facing. We should respect the decision of the government. This can be my contribution for the country's progress. Don't worry and board your train)," cab driver, Vipin Kumar, told him.

Arora ends his post by praising the cab driver.  "He proved the PM Modi quote in which he said -- common man of India always ready to face hardship in country's interest," he says on Facebook.

11:55   Court's contempt notice part of 'pre-arranged drama': Justice Katju
After the Supreme Court on Friday issued suo motu contempt notice to its former judge Markandey Katju, the latter launched a personal attack on the bench in a series of tweets calling the decision the result of a "pre-arranged drama".

Slamming the bench's decision to issue him a contempt notice, Katju wrote, "In India too, this rule of judicial 'omerta' applies. I have been speaking against judicial corruption at the higher levels for long. For long I have been speaking out against the misdeeds of Dattu, Thakur, Anil Dave, and their ilk. As a result I have been ostracised."

Alleging that the bench, comprising of Justices Ranjan Gogoi, P C Pant and Uday U Lalit, was playing out a "shameless", pre-orchestrated "drama" in court, Katju wrote, "My guess about the event yesterday is that a 'surgical strike' was pre-planned by Thakur, Dave etc in cahoots with Gogoi to humiliate me and issue a contempt of court notice to me in order to silence me, & also give a warning to others not to speak out about the misdeeds of judges."

The bench had issued the notice to Katju for writing blogs that the court called "an assault on the judges", a first in the country's judicial history, after he criticised the September 15 judgment that had set aside the death penalty for the convict in Kerala's Soumya rape-cum-murder case.

11:31   Man who predicted Trump would win has another prediction: He'll be impeached
Few prognosticators predicted a Donald Trump victory ahead of Tuesday night. Polls showed Hillary Clinton comfortably ahead, and much of America (chiefly the media) failed to anticipate the wave of pro-Trump support that propelled him to victory. But a Washington, DC-based professor insisted that Trump was lined up for a win -- based on the idea that elections are primarily a reflection on the performance of the party in power.

Lichtman has made another call: that if elected, Trump would eventually be impeached by a Republican Congress that would prefer a President Mike Pence -- someone whom establishment Republicans know and trust.

08:21   Under Trump, H-1B visa issue may affect Indo-US ties: expert
Donald Trump's administration would build on progress made in Indo-US ties and be less tolerant of Pakistan's "dual policies" on terror, but the issue of H-1B visas could be a potential area of friction with New Delhi, a noted US expert on South Asian issues has said.

"It seems likely that a Trump administration will build on the marked progress made in US-India relations over the last couple of years," Lisa Curtis of the Heritage Foundation, a top American think-tank, said.

Curtis said Trump's tougher stance on terrorism, in general, will find favour among Indians, who are wary of attacks by Pakistan-based terrorist groups.

"It is expected that a Trump administration will work more closely with India on combating terrorism in the region and will be less tolerant of Pakistan's dual policies toward terrorism," Curtis said.

However, H-1B is a potential area of conflict between the two countries, she noted.

"One area of potential friction could be over the H1-B visa issue. It is still unclear how Trump's global business background will impact on his commitment to protect American workers," she said.

And now she has one more accomplishment to add to her list: a third Vogue cover within seven years.
