President-elect Donald Trump has arrived at the White House for his meeting with President Barack Obama to take the first public step in a transition of power after a bitterly fought election campaign that ended with the Republican businessman's surprise victory..

Obama -- who for his part had branded Trump "uniquely unqualified" for office and campaigned against him -- urged all Americans to accept the result of Tuesday's election.

"We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country," he said.

Melania Trump, meanwhile, will meet with Michelle Obama in the East Wing of the White House. Melania memorably gave a speech at the Republican National Convention, parts of which were plagiarised from a speech by Michelle.

Following the meetings, Trump will head to Capitol Hill along with Mike Pence, the vice president-elect, for lunch with Paul Ryan, the speaker of the house.

Meanwhile his transition team is working feverishly to fill out the key roles in the new administration. Rudy Giuliani, Newt Gingrich and Jeff Sessions are among those tipped for top positions.
