Fifteen Defence Security Corps soldiers and two officers have been killed and 15 injured in a major fire that broke out at one of India's biggest ammunition depots at Pulgaon, 110 kilometers from Nagpur, Maharashtra in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Defence sources informed that the fire at the Central Ammunition Depot had been brought under control.

The toll is likely to go up, they added.

The cause of the fire, which broke out around 1 am, is yet to be ascertained.

Rescue operations have been slowed down by secondary explosions at the ammunition depot.

Apart from being one of largest Army ammunition depots, CAD Pulgaon also disposes off ammunition whose shelf life has expired.

Nearby villages have been evacuated, as per reports.
