Just in: Loan defaulter Vijay Mallya resigns from Rajya Sabha.

This comes a week after the Rajya Sabha's ethics committee decided to unanimously expel the UB Group chairman from the Parliament's upper House, and gave him a week's time to explain his conduct in the default on bank loans in excess of Rs 9,000 crore extended to his Kingfisher Airlines Ltd.

The decision, seen as a slap in the face of Mallya, came at the same timee as the government revoking his diplomatic passport in an effort to secure his return to India.

The show-cause notice is a procedural formality before the expulsion of Mallya, whose Rajya Sabha membership as an independent lapses on 30 June 2016.
