23:35   Kanhaiya does damage control, says will fight every 'massacre'
Under fire over his comments on 1984 anti-Sikh riots JNU students union president Kanhaiya Kumar appeared to be in a damage control mode today and said he will fight against every massacre.

"We will fight against massacres may it be Bathani Tola massacre, or 1984 riots or the 2002 riots. We will together fight for their closures and we will make sure that the closure is in favour of justice and in favour of society," he said while addressing a protest gathering at Jantar Mantar here.

"Government wants to tire us in our struggles. But, they should keep in mind that neither is their exploitation new,nor is our struggle new. You have not tired exploiting us and we will also not tire in our struggle," he added. Kanhaiya attracted criticism over his remarks earlier this week that 1984 anti-Sikh riot was a "mob-led massacre"while 2002 Gujarat riots were a "state sponsored violence."

His comments did not go down well even with those who have been his zealous supporters ever since he was arrested in a sedition case over an event against hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru during which anti-national slogans were allegedly raised.

A sessions court today rejected the anticipatory bail plea of a man whose name came to the fore as an accomplice of the alleged henchman-cum-sharp shooter of self-styled godman Asaram Bapu during investigation by police.

The sharpshooter Kartik Haldar, arrested earlier this month for allegedly shooting dead three witnesses in rape cases against Asaram, had conveyed K D Patel's name to the police.

The court of Additional Sessions Judge N G Dave rejected the bail plea on the ground that the crime under consideration was of serious nature. Patel's counsel said they would move the high court for pre-arrest bail. Haldar had told police that Patel was one of his aides who was involved in the murder of at least three witnesses and assaulting four others who had testified against Asaram and his son Narayan Sai in rape cases.

Women cannot be banned from entering a temple, a court in Mumbai said while hearing a challenge to the ban on women at the Shani Shingnapur temple.

The Bombay High Court said: "As per Hindu Law women cannot be stopped from entering the temple."Giving the Maharashtra government two days to explain the ban, the court questioned, "if women enter temples, is it affecting the purity?"

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had earlier said it was not part of Hindu culture to restrict women from entering temples.

Women have not been allowed for centuries into the inner chambers of the famous temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Temple priests claim it is not discrimination but done to protect women as the vibrations from some idols are harmful for women.

15:48   Minister denies telling farmer threatening suicide, to 'do what you like'
The Minister of State for Agriculture, Sanjeev Balyan (pictured) has now said that he did not tell a farmer to 'do whatever he likes' when the farmer threatened to commit suicide.

A farmer approached the minister with his problems and threatened to commit suicide if his demands are not met. The Minister of State for Agriculture said he is free to do whatever he likes.

"Do whatever you like," Balyan told the farmer in Rajasthan's Tonk where he was attending an event organised by the Indian Council of Agriculture Research.

According to an IBN Khabar report, the farmer named Giriraj Jat complained to the minister that the power supply to his village Arniya Kakda was cut off for over a fortnight, affecting his 200-odd fruit trees.

Frustrated by the apathy of the electricity department in the BJP-ruled state, the farmer is reported to have told Balyan that he will be forced to commit suicide if he does not get urgent help.

Giriraj repeated this several times, prompting the controversial parliamentarian from Muzaffarnagar to get up and say, "Go, do whatever you like. Don't talk about it."

Thousands of farmers commit suicide every year in India due to mounting debt or bad weather destroying crops. In the last two decades, nearly 300,000 Indian farmers have killed themselves by consuming pesticides or hanging themselves.

Maharashtra, with more 65,000 farmer suicides, tops the list. Last year, as many as 3,228 debt-hit farmers committed suicide in Maharashtra, with the maximum in Vidarbha and Marathwada regions.

15:24   Why the EgyptAir passenger took a picture with his hijacker
A British man who posed smiling for a photo with a hijacker on board an EgyptAir flight has said he did it to take "a closer look" at the apparent explosives belt, adding: "I figured if his bomb was real I'd nothing to lose anyway."

Ben Innes, 26, was one of three passengers and four crew held to the end of a hostage siege, after Seif Eldin Mustafa hijacked the EgyptAir flight bound for Cairo from Alexandria and forced it to be redirected to Cyprus.

He was returning home on a business trip when flight MS181 was seized.

13:59   Man accused of EgyptAir hijacking appears in Cyprus court
The man accused of hijacking an EgyptAir plane and forcing it to land in Cyprus was remanded into police custody for eight days during his first court appearance today.

Police told the court in Larnaca that 58-year-old Egyptian Seif al-Din Mohamed Mostafa faces possible charges of hijacking, kidnapping people with the aim of taking them to an unknown destination, reckless and threatening behaviour and offences that breach the anti-terror law.

The accused did not speak in court. But as he left in a police car, he gave the victory sign to journalists attending the hearing at the courthouse, which is less than a kilometre (half a mile) away from Larnaca airport where the hijacking unfolded on Tuesday. Mostafa, who has a Cypriot ex-wife, will not face any formal charges until a later hearing and only at that point will he be expected to enter a plea.

Cyprus authorities have described Mostafa as "psychologically unstable" and said the case was not "terrorism-related". He is accused of forcing the plane to divert to Larnaca airport on the island's south coast on Tuesday by threatening to detonate an explosives belt that turned out to be fake. Authorities allege that his motives were personal and related to his Cypriot ex-wife with whom he is reported to have had children.

The hijacking triggered a six-hour standoff at the airport and the closure of the main entry point for tourists to the Mediterranean resort island. Most of the 55 passengers on the plane -- originally travelling from Alexandria to Cairo -- were quickly released after it had landed.

But some escaped only minutes before the standoff ended, including one uniformed man who was seen clambering out of a cockpit window and dropping to the ground.

11:53   SC steps in to help road accident victims with Good Samaritan law
The Supreme Court today approved the Centre's guidelines to protect Good Samaritans, who help road accident victims, from being unnecessarily harassed by police or any other authority.

A bench comprising justices V Gopala Gowda and Arun Mishra asked the central government to give wide publicity to these guidelines so that people who help others in the time of distress are not victimised by any authority.

Earlier this month, the apex court had said it will pass an order on the recommendations of a committee headed by its former judge on road safety which advocated that people saving lives of road accident victims need not fear harassment by police or other authorities.

The bench also took on record the guidelines placed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways which were based on the recommendations of the three-member committee headed by former judge K S Radhakrishnan.

The committee, also comprising former Secretary of Road Transport Ministry S Sundar and Nishi Mittal, ex-chief scientist, had given 12 major recommendations including setting up of State Road Safety Councils, evolving a protocol for identification of black spots, their removal and monitoring to see the effectiveness of the action taken.

The apex court-appointed committee had also suggested strengthening of enforcement relating to drunken driving, over-speeding, red light jumping and helmet or seat belt laws.

The ministry had said in a statement that in the absence of any statutory backing, it was proving difficult to enforce these guidelines and therefore the government had approached the apex court to consider issuing these guidelines, through an order binding on all states and Union Territories, until the Union government enacts a law to this effect.

The apex court had in 2014 appointed the three-member committee to monitor steps taken by the Centre and state governments to ensure road safety.

11:23   In Bengal, Left alliance just 1% behind Mamata, says opinion poll
The Left-Congress alliance is expected to breathe down the neck of the Trinamul Congress, grabbing a vote share of 44 per cent against the ruling party's 45 per cent in the coming Assembly elections in Bengal, an opinion poll shows.

Conducted by ABP Ananda-The Nielsen Company, the poll was largely carried out before the Narada videos became a talking point and the Opposition combine gained momentum.

The outcome broadly follows the trend of the 2014 Lok Sabha election, if the Left and Congress votes are added (see chart). But the one big takeaway is that Left-Congress attempts to consolidate the anti-Mamata Banerjee secular vote appear to be paying off. Read more

They are the Nepalese climbers who for decades have escorted tourists up and down the mountain: incredibly risky work for a very small share of the reward. Read more

11:09   Terror in Lahore: Pakistans toughest test
What makes Sunday's tragedy in Lahore particularly significant is its location. Lahore is the capital of Punjab province and the political stronghold of Pakistan's ruling PML-N party.

In recent years, Punjab has suffered fewer mass casualty terror attacks than Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces.

However, a number of assaults in recent years have made clear that Punjab is not immune, from a triple bombing on a Sufi shrine that killed more than 40 people in Lahore in 2010, to the assassination of Shuja Khanzada, a top PML-N politician, near the district of Attock in 2015.

The park blast simply amplifies what has long been known: terrorists very much have Punjab, and Lahore in particular, in their crosshairs.

Three Muslim youth- Dilkash, Mohammad Ajmal and Naeem-- were allegedly beaten up by unidentified men at a park in outer Delhi's Begampur area, as they refused to chant pro-religious and national slogans such as 'Jai Mata Ki' and 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'.

"We had gone to a nearby park. Some men came and slapped one of my friends. They asked us to say 'Jai Mata Ki' and 'Bharat Mata Ki' and threatened to kill us. 10:59   Tata Steel puts entire UK business up for sale
India's Tata Steel, Britain's largest steelmaker, is considering the sale of its entire UK business to stem heavy losses, a move that would draw a line under its almost decade-long foray into Britain.

After a marathon board meeting in Mumbai, the Indian steel giant said in a statement in the early hours of Wednesday that the financial performance of its UK arm had deteriorated substantially in recent months, after years of weak conditions.

Blaming high manufacturing costs, domestic market weakness and increased imports into Europe from countries like China, the company said it saw little change ahead for its UK plants.

"Pakistan is a very, very vital problem and really vital country for us because they have a thing called nuclear weapons. They have to get a hold of their situation," Trump told CNN during a town hall in Wisconsin, where the Republican presidential primary is scheduled for April 5.

"When I see that and when I see it put in a park because it was mostly Christians, although many others were killed other than Christians, I think it's just absolutely a horrible story," he said referring to the terrorist attack in Lahore on Easter Sunday that claimed 74 lives and injured over 300 others.

"I'm talking about radical Islamic terrorism. I will solve it far better than anybody else running," Trump said in response to a question.
