An Indian Army jawan has gone missing after an avalanche hit an army patrol in Turtuk, in West Siachen. Earlier, an avalanche warning was signalled for higher areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand asking people not to venture in these areas over the next 48 hours.

Earlier in the month, the Indian Army lost 10 soldiers, Lance Naik Hanamanthappa Koppad, who was dug out from under the snow after 6 days.

The Siachen glacier is the world's highest battlefield, with Indian soldiers battling not just gruelling environmental conditions, but also combating long periods of isolation.
