Filmmaker Steven Spielberg has been chosen to deliver the Harvard University commencement speech for this year's graduating class on May 26.

The 69-year-old Oscar-winning director is giving the 365th commencement speech in the history of the college, the oldest in the United States, reported Entertainment Weekly

"Steven Spielberg is a genre-defying filmmaker whose unparalleled creativity has fueled countless imaginations. An extraordinary storyteller, he has given voice to the silenced and brought history to life.

"Through his art, Mr Spielberg has challenged us to dream and to see the world anew, and I am very much looking forward to welcoming him back to Harvard and to honoring him during our 365th commencement exercises," Harvard President Drew Faust said in a statement.

A video paying tribute to several of Spielberg's films was also created by the university to accompany the announcement.
