23:09   Flip flop on Mallya's look-out circular: CBI says it erred
Under fire over the flip-flop on Vijay Mallya's look-out circular, a red-faced CBI today admitted that the first notice seeking detention of the beleaguered businessman was issued to Bureau of Immigration because of an "inadvertent error" on its part.

The CBI is facing flak after questions were raised how the liquor baron was able to go abroad unhindered on March 2 that has triggered a political slugfest with the BJP and the Congress trading charges.

It had changed the nature of look-out notice against Mallya within one month of issuance from seeking his detention while leaving the country to that of merely providing information about his travel plans.

A CBI spokesperson today claimed Mallya was not found during searches on October 10, 2015 after which the agency wrote to BoI, saying it needs to be issued to ensure "his availability for questioning" in connection with Rs 900 crore loan default case involving IDBI bank.

She said that along with the covering letter, proforma for the circular was attached in which the column related to seeking the detention of an accused was wrongly "ticked" by a SP-level officer.

19:24   Attack on scribes at Patiala House terrible exception: Jaitley
Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today termed the attack on journalists at Patiala House Courts as a "terrible exception" and decried the presence of crowds inside court premises which he said creates an "oppressive environment".

He said the courts must remain "detached" and should not be carried by issues or trends of the moment as anything on the contrary would be a threat to free speech and a fair trial.

"It was a terrible exception what happened. Normally people in the public place find media as their natural ally. The whole idea of getting the media dragged into contemporaneous controversy and then attacking it physically is absolutely unacceptable, anywhere, in courts so more particularly," he said.

15:56   Buddhist monk mistaken for Muslim, attacked in US
In a hate-fuelled attack, a 66-year-old Buddhist monk was assaulted in the US with the attacker apparently mistaking him for a Muslim. Kozen Sampson, a Buddhist monk, said he was attacked during a visit to Hood River in Oregon state.

The brown robe-clad Sampson's car door was kicked into his head by a man who abused him and then fled on foot, according to the Hood River Police Department. Police described the assailant as a white male with brown hair. Investigators are probing the incident that took place on February 29 as a possible hate crime. Sampson told the New York Daily News he suffered a small cut, some memory loss and was "stunned for a minute or two" after the man attacked him on his trip to take his dogs to obedience training.

"I know that that was an angry thought that this person had, but Muslims have to deal with this every day," said Sampson. "Could you imagine living with such anger? Our hope is that we can find a way that people can release this anger and fear," he said. "It's really not about me. It's about loving kindness and taking care of all of our people," Sampson said.

15:18   SC dismisses plea seeking direction to use 'Bharat' instead of 'India'
The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the Public Interest Litigation seeking direction to use 'Bharat' instead of 'India' by the Union Government and states, saying that it was not right to bring all kinds of emotional issues to the court.

Chief Justice of India, Justice T S Thakur, while dismissing the plea, told the petitioner not to bring all kinds of emotional issues to the court in the name of public interest. Justice Thakur also said that those who want to call the nation as India will call it India, and those who want to call it Bharat will call it Bharat.

The apex court had last year in April issued notices to the central and state governments seeking their response to a PIL seeking to use 'Bharat' instead of 'India' for all 'official and unofficial purposes'. The PIL, filed by a petitioner identified as Niranjan Bhatwal, also sought to restrain the use of 'India' for governmental purposes.

14:15   Can Russia use nukes to fly to Mars in 45 days?
YOU DO NOT want to go to Mars. At least, not with today's engines powering the trip. A chemically propelled voyage would take 18 months, one way.

During which time any combination of boredom, radiation poisoning, and cancer will likely kill you. Suppose you make it?

Congratulations on being the first Martian to die of old age, because a return trip from the Red Planet is currently impossible without using wishful logistics like fuel harvesting.

The Russians think they can do better. Last week, their national nuclear corporation Rosatom announced it is building a nuclear engine that will reach Mars in a month and a half -- with fuel to burn for the trip home. Russia might not achieve its goal of launching a prototype by 2025.

But that has more to do with the countrys financial situation (not great) than the technical challenges of a nuclear engine.

14:08   164 ponzi companies vanished after raising public money: Jaitley
As many as 164 ponzi companies are currently being probed by central agencies for duping customers across the country, government said today.

Cases pertaining to the 164 ponzi or chit fund companies have been assigned to the Serious Fraud Investigation Office for investigation, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said in Lok Sabha during Question Hour and released a list of these firms against which inquiries are in progress. The minister said the government has taken a number of steps to check cases of corporate frauds and protect interests of the investors of all such ponzi schemes.

The action includes incorporating 'fraud' as a substantive offence in the Companies Act, 2013, granting statutory status to the SFIO under the law, stricter norms of corporate governance and their implementation.

"Greater application of technology for early and preliminary identification of cases involving frauds through data analysis and usage of forensic tools etc., is being promoted," Jaitley said.

Several states have framed laws to deal with ponzi scheme-related cases, besides the SEBI and SFIO too have taken action against offenders, he said.

13:55   Meet Canada's new defence minister with a difference
'Harjit Sajjan has an understated way of talking about his days combatting drug gangs as a Vancouver police detective or uncovering the secrets of Taliban networks as a reserve officer during three tours of duty in Afghanistan,' writes John Geddes in the macleans.ca, in what is the most definitive account of Canada's new, and surprise, defence minister.

'While Sajjan's combat-zone and policing exploits seem to be what set him apart from most politicians, his experience with agricultural piecework may have been more definitive. "My generation, other friends I grew up with, a lot of whom are very successful now, we met berry picking,' he says. "We're the only kids that wanted a longer school year and wanted it to rain in the summertime.' Wet weather meant the vans wouldn't be coming that day to collect the pickers,' writes John Geddes, here.

13:53   Veto to blame for non-resolution of Kashmir issue: Pakistan
Raking up the Kashmir issue at the United Nations, Pakistan has said use of the veto in Security Council prevented solving the "longstanding dispute" and "hindered" implementation of UN resolutions on the matter.

Pakistan's Ambassador to the UN, Maleeha Lodhi, speaking in the Inter-Governmental Negotiations on Security Council reform on March 9, said "the use of the veto in the Security Council prevented a resolution of the longstanding dispute of Kashmir and hindered implementation of UN Resolutions on the issue".

Her remarks were made available in a press release issued by the Pakistan mission to the UN. According to UN records, Russia - a permanent member of the Security Council -- had in 1962 vetoed an Irish resolution that had urged India and Pakistan to enter negotiations for settlement of the Kashmir dispute.

Lodhi reiterated Pakistan's position on the veto, saying that it was opposed to adding new permanent members to the Council with or without a veto.

Dear girl from Pakistan,
I know it has taken me 69 long years
but I hope it is not too late for me to say,
Forget about what's in the news,
Tell me, how was your day?

'In the poem, she speaks to a nameless Pakistani girl, telling her that she's sorry for missed opportunities to interact and communicate. A new, revolutionary breast cancer therapy has shown "staggering' results in trials, destroying the deadly tumours in just 11 days, reports the Daily Telegraph, London.

08:14   US senate shoots down resolution against F-16 sale to Pakistan
US senators have strongly opposed the use of taxpayers' money for military aid to Pakistan in $700 million sale of eight F-16 fighter jets to the country as they questioned Islamabad's commitment to fight terrorist organisations.

However, for their own political reasons the senators did not approve tabling of a resolution suggesting blocking of sale of eight F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan.

Even though considered to be procedural in nature, the senate by a vote of 71-24 disapproved the move to bypass the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in deciding against sale of F-16 jets to Pakistan, Congressional sources told PTI that the voting of some two-dozen influential senators reflects the strong anti-Pak sentiment prevailing at the Hill.

None of the senators, even though they voted for the motion to disallow tabling of the resolution seeking preventing sale of F-16 to Pakistan, spoke in support of Islamabad.

04:35   US says there's 'probable cause' iPhone has evidence of San Bernardino attack
A locked iPhone used by one of the gunmen in last year's mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, likely holds evidence of the eventual attack, the Justice Department said in a court filing in its encryption dispute with Apple Inc, adding that the community and the public "need to know" what is on the device.

The government's filing is aimed at encouraging a federal magistrate judge to affirm her order from last month that directed Apple to help the FBI gain access to the phone used by Syed Farook, one of the two attackers in the December 2 shootings that killed 14 people.

The brief, which sets the stage for a March 22 hearing, marks a further escalation of rhetoric between the federal government and the technology company.

"There is probable cause to believe there is evidence of a terrorist attack on that phone, and our legal system gives this Court the authority to see that it can be searched pursuant to a lawful warrant," the filing states. At issue is a February 16 order directing Apple to create specialised software that can bypass auto-erase functions on the phone and enable the FBI to remotely access the phone.

Apple has challenged the order as unlawful and in violation of its constitutional rights, but the Justice Department reiterated its argument that its request is only about one phone and that it will not be unduly burdensome for the company to comply.

02:57   Security fears overshadow world's biggest travel fair
Security fears are on everybody's lips at the ITB travel trade fair in Berlin this year as a battered tourist industry seeks to reassure travelers and tour operators that they need not shy away from booking summer holidays for this year.

Attacks in tourist hotspots like a Tunisian beach resort and the city of Paris over the past year have rattled travelers' confidence, sending bookings for Tunisia, Turkey and Egypt plummeting and heralding a slowdown in demand for international travel.

"People have money to spend, but there's a strong negative impact from the geopolitical situation. People fear attacks," Roy Scheerder, commercial director at low cost Dutch airline Transavia, told Reuters at ITB.

01:20   Iran MP sued over 'no donkeys, no women in parliament' rant
Iranian women deputies are suing a conservative male colleague, Nader Ghazipour, after he declared in a video that parliament was no place for "donkeys and women".

Ghazipour's comments during an election campaign meeting last month have gone viral on social media.

"Parliament is not a place for foxes, donkeys and women," he proclaims before a cheering crowd in the video ahead of the February 26 polls.

If you elect women, "they (men colleagues) might do things to them and disgrace you", he said.

Ghazipour was elected in Orumiyeh, a Turkish-speaking province near the border with Turkey.

Women MPs -- along with a number of men -- have filed complaints with Iran's prosecutor general, parliament's supervision committee and house speaker Ali Larijani, a leading woman deputy, Fatemeh Rahbar, told state news agency IRNA.

"There has been an accusation against women, and Mr Ghazipour must be held responsible," she said.

Ghazipour had sent an apology through mediators, but the plaintiffs "won't withdraw their lawsuit", Rahbar said. "His words have gone public through the media and gone viral inside and outside Iran. He should come out" and explain himself.

01:20   Google provides 1st peek at next Android operating system
Google is previewing the next version of its Android operating system two months ahead of schedule in an effort to get the upgraded software on more mobile devices.

The new rendition initially is being recommended only for mobile app makers and will only work on a few smartphones and tablets.

Google usually hasn't released test versions of Android until its annual developers' conference. The event begins May 18 this year.

The upgraded software, known as "Android N" for now, offers a split-screen feature so users can toggle between apps and the ability to reply directly to notifications. Those options are already on the operating system that runs Apple's iPhone.

Although Android powers most of the world's smartphones, it often takes years before consumers install upgraded versions of the software

01:19   Republicans themselves to be blamed for Trump's rise: Obama
President Barack Obama today dismissed the notion that the meteoric rise of Donald Trump is a result of his policies and said the Republican presidential front-runner's positions on immigration and other issues are not much different from those of the party's other candidates.

"I am not going to do is to validate some notion that the Republican crack-up that's been taking place is a consequence of actions that I've taken. There are thoughtful conservatives, who are troubled by this, who are troubled by the direction of their party," Obama told a White House news conference along with the visiting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Obama alleged that the Republican political elites and many of its information outlets -- social media, news outlets, talk radio, television stations -- have been feeding its base, for the last seven years, a notion that everything he do is to be opposed that "cooperation or compromise somehow is a betrayal."

"The tone of that politics, which I certainly have not contributed to -- I have not -- you know, I don't think that I was the one to prompt questions about my birth certificate, for example. I don't remember saying, hey, why don't you ask me about that?," he asked.

01:19   Stronger US-Canada ties on menu for Trudeau-Obama talks
President Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised today to make it easier for their respective countries to trade and invest in one another, share more information about their respective no-fly lists to prevent the flow of foreign fighters and promote clean energy as a central focus of economic growth.

Obama and Trudeau spoke during a news conference after they met in the Oval Office, and after a welcoming ceremony at which the White House rolled out the red carpet for the first official visit in nearly two decades by a Canadian prime minister, a charismatic and youthful liberal leader intent on maintaining tight ties with the United States.

"We're woven together so deeply as societies, as economies, that it's sometimes easy to forget how truly remarkable our relationship is," Obama said.

Obama said the two leaders instructed aides to make it easier for goods and people to move back and forth between the two nation's borders. Trudeau said the two leaders made clear they both want a "clean-growth economy," and earlier in the day, they announced efforts to reduce methane emissions from gas and oil production.
