The Justice Vishnu Sahai inquiry commission has given a clean chit to the Uttar Pradesh Government in the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, in which more than 60 people were killed and over 50,000 displaced.

The report, which was tabled in the state assembly on Sunday, blamed local officials for mishandling the situation that aggravated the riots.

The report further said there was a failure of local intelligence and the transfer of District Magistrate and the Muzaffanagar Superintendent of Police also had an impact.

The commission was initially asked to submit its report in two months, but it was later given several extensions.
