'Normal relationships should soon start between India-Pak'
March 04, 2016  16:06
'The Pathankot incident disrupted the process of two foreign secretaries meeting, but now that we have taken decisive action on this Pathankot incident the police report has been registered and an investigation team is about to go to India to collect additional evidence. The leaders have been apprehended and in protective custody, as well as their facilities seized. So I think now if they get more evidence the process will start. And it's as prompt and active a response as we can get.

'So once we begin the dialogue, I'm sure we'll be able to at least deal with some issues even if we can't solve all the issues and disputes. Our main purpose is that the line of control should remain peaceful. Normal relationships should start, whether it's sporting links or other links, so the tensions don't increase. That prepares the ground for dealing with more difficult and substantial issues.'

That is Sartaj Aziz, advisor to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, speaking to Shirin R Tahir-Kheli, senior fellow, Foreign Policy Institute, John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and discussing Pakistan's role in the security and stability of the region and Sharif's policy priorities for US-Pakistan relations, organised under the aegis of the Council for Foreign Relations on March 1, 2016.
