EC may announce 5-state assembly polls schedule today

Election Commission likely to announce on Thursday the schedule for the much-awaited elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and the Union Terrrotiry of Puducherry.

The terms of the state assemblies are ending between May 22 and June 5, and the EC could look at finishing the poll process by mid-May, leaving a few days for government. 

With the school examinations in the poll-bound states ending by early April and regional festivals/holidays like Tamil Nadu's New Year, Bihu (Assam) and Vishu (Kerala) falling in mid-April, the EC could to start polling sometime in the third week of April. 

On Tuesday, March 1, a meeting between EC and home ministry officials took place at Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi. 

The EC officials also held a final round of talks with the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of all states -- CEO of West Bengal Sunil Gupta, CEO of Assam Sri Vijayendra, CEO of Kerala E K Majhi, CEO of Tamil Nadu Thiru. Rajesh Lakhoni and CEO of Puducherry V Candavelou.
