Ahead of a key meeting of the elite Nuclear Suppliers' Group in Seoul on Friday, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar visited China this week to seek support for India's membership.

Jaishankar was in Beijing on June 16-17 and held bilateral consultations with his Chinese counterpart, the ministry of external affairs has confirmed.

China has been leading a group of countries in the 48-member NSG that are holding out against India's membership.

The NSG trades in advanced nuclear material and technology while restricting the sale of items that can be used to make nuclear arms.  It will hold an important plenary from June 23-24 in Seoul when the membership application of India is set to be taken up.
