Former Indian cricketer Chetan Chauhan's appointment as the Chairman of the National Institute of Fashion Technology, country's premier fashion technology institute, prompted sharp reaction from Twitteratti.

Twitter users created elaborate jokes and made the 68-year-old trend on the social network for hours.

"Former cricketer Chetan Chauhan is now chairman, National Institute of Fashion Technology. Reports suggest Salman Khan will soon head ISRO," Twitter user lindsay pereira said.

"Time for BCCI to announce Manish Malhotra as Indian team's coach," another tweet said.

Many also cited the NIFT ACT 2006 which states that the chairperson of the institute should be "an eminent academician, scientist or technologist or professional."

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the appointment.

"Modi ji ne bhi chun chun ke chamchon ki fauj jama ki h- Gajendra Chauhan, chetan chauhan, pahlaj nihalani, arnab goswami, smriti irani," he tweeted.
