Congress leader and former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit has been appointed Congress in-charge of Punjab a day after Kamal Nath tendered his resignation to party chief Sonia Gandhi, news channel India Today reported.

The Congress party is yet to make an announcement, but Dikshit meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi today.

The party had come under strident attack for naming Kamal Nath, a politician long under a 1984 anti-Sikh riots cloud, as party in-charge of Punjab and Haryana.

Dikshit, born in Punjab, had last served as Governor of Kerala. During her political career, she has served as Delhi chief minister for three consecutive terms as well as a Member of Parliament in 1984.
