Active shooter, possible hostages at Amarillo, Texas Walmart

Police responded to an active shooter situation where a suspect may have taken hostages inside a Walmart in Amarillo, Texas, on Tuesday afternoon.  

The Amarillo Police Department tweeted officers were 'on scene with armed subject at the Walmart at Georgia and Canyon Drive' at around 12.30pm.

Officials believed there was only one shooter. There had been shots fired but it was unclear how many, police told Daily Mail Online.

No injuries were immediately reported. 

Apart from Amarillo police officers, sheriff's deputies from Randall and Potter Counties, as well as Texas highway patrolmen were on the scene, officials said. 

The public is asked to stay away from the area.
