Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi on Thursday lashed out at the Environment Ministry headed by Prakash Javadekar and said that she could not understand its 'lust for killing' animals.

Maneka, who is also an animal rights activist, said that the ministry was "writing letters to every state and allowing the killing of animals like elephants, wild boar and monkeys".  Her comments came after 200 nilgai were shot in Bihar in the last six days.

Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has responded saying if the state asks the ministry, it permits the culling of animals to protect crops. He said the permit to shoot the blue bulls is valid till November in 31 in Bihar's 39 districts.

Earlier, on June 1, in a social media interaction, Maneka had also called for a nationwide online protest to ban cow-slaughter. She also voiced her protest against zoos and said that "they are no longer a place of amusement for children and should be banned'.
