The Uttar Pradesh government today appointed the wife of Superintendent of Police Mukul Dwivedi, who lost his life during Mathura violence last week, as a gazetted officer.

The decision to appoint Archana Dwivedi as a gazetted officer was taken at a cabinet meeting, an official release said in Lucknow.

Dwivedi was killed last week in clashes that broke out after activists of 'Azad Bharat Vidhik Vaicharik Kranti Satyagrahi' indulged in widespread violence at Jawahar Bag in Mathura when police tried to evict them from large tracts of government land they had occupied for over two years, following an order of the Allahabad high court.

Rafael Nadal has pulled out of this year's Wimbledon. The 30-year-old was forced to withdraw from the French Open in round three because of a wrist injury and subsequently pulled out of Wimbledon warm-up tournament Queen's.

He wrote on his Facebook wall, "Hi everybody. Im sad to announce that after talking to my doctors, and receiving the results of my last medical revision, I wont be able to play at Wimbledon this year.

21:28   What next? Sanders discusses future with Obama after Democratic primaries
US Senator Bernie Sanders returned to Washington for high-level talks on Thursday, including a meeting with US President Barack Obama, as Democrats pressured him to end his presidential campaign and support Hillary Clinton after a hard-fought primary race.

Clinton, the former secretary of state, won enough delegates to secure the Democratic nomination this week and become the first woman to lead a major US party as its presidential nominee.

Despite her commanding victories in California and New Jersey in presidential contests on Tuesday, Sanders vowed to carry his populist campaign to the Democratic National Convention in July, when the party's nominee is formally chosen.

Obama, who is expected to endorse Clinton soon, welcomed Sanders to the White House, chatting and chuckling as they walked into the Oval Office.

20:43   Women's entry into Haji Ali: Court to deliver judgment on June 28
The Bombay high court today said it would pronounce on June 28 its verdict on a petition filed by a women's group challenging ban on entry of women inside the sanctum sanctorum of Haji Ali dargah in Mumbai.

A division bench of justices V M Kanade and Revati Mohite- Dhere asked the petitioner and trust officials to submit orders, if any, passed by the Supreme Court and the Bombay HC in similar places, including Sabrimala and Shanisingnapur temples, where entry of woman had been banned.

The bench said it would study the cases and pass an order accordingly.

The PIL states that gender justice is inherent in Quran and the decision contravenes the Hadith, which proves that there is no prohibition on women visiting graves.

The Maharashtra government has told the court that women should be barred from entering the inner sanctorum of Haji Ali dargah only if it is so enshrined in the Quran. The ban on women's entry cannot be justified if it is on the basis of an expert's interpretation of the Quran, the then Maharashtra Advocate General Shrihari Aney had argued.

On whether the court can interfere in the customs and traditions of a religion, Aney had said, "If the religion (Islam) is going to fall if women are allowed entry, then the ban should prevail over fundamental rights."

The dargah trust had defended its stand saying that it is referred in Quran that allowing women close proximity to the dargah of a male saint is a grievous sin.

20:35   'Radical changes' in film certification to be announced soon: Jaitley
Amid a raging row over 'Udta Punjab', Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley today said movie certification norms have to be liberal and "some very radical changes" will be announced over the next few days.

In his first comments on the row sparked by cuts sought by Central Board of Film Certification on Udta Punjab, a film that portrays the problem of drug addiction in the state, he said, "I won't say its overboard. I don't know this case because I have not seen this film in question."

Stating that he was "not satisfied" with the existing system of film certification, Jaitley said there are some changes that are about be made. "There is a well documented report by Shyam Benegal, the first part which has come to me which is under consideration. Over the next few days we are going to announce some very radical changes in that," he said.

The committee, he said, has suggested some changes. "You will probably have a system where you will have to have a certificate. The correct word is certification and not censorship. Certification norms will have to be liberal," he said.

20:27   China says documentary on LeT does not represent its stand
China today disowned a documentary shown by the state-run channels about the involvement of Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Tayiba in the Mumbai attacks, saying it is a dubbed version of an American TV programme and no way represents the government's position.

"We have contacted the Chinese media and learnt that the relevant program is a Chinese-dubbed American documentary," a brief statement put out by the Chinese foreign ministry on its website said today.

"What it (documentary) said does not represent the position of the Chinese government. China's position on the issue of counter-terrorism remains unchanged," it said. The ministry's reaction was in response to a question on the China Central Television documentary on the Mumbai terror attacks, linking Pakistan to the assault.

While it was unprecedented for CCTV to carry a documentary in which confessions of Ajmal Kasab, the lone survivor of the Mumbai attacks, was also shown, officials say it was equally rare for Chinese foreign ministry to refute the report which went against China's all weather ally Pakistan.

19:26   Dadri villagers move court seeking case against Akhlaq's family for cow slaughter
A group of Bisada villagers today moved court seeking the filing of a First Information Report for alleged cow slaughter against the family members of Mohammad Akhlaq.

Akhlaq had been lynched nine months ago in the Dadri village of Uttar Pradesh on suspicion that his family stored and ate beef at their house.

Last week, ignoring police orders, a group of BJP and Shiv Sena politicians led a village meeting or mahapanchayat demanding action against the family of Mohammed Akhlaq.

Many fear this would give rise to a new round of communal tension in Dadri, just 50 km from Delhi.

"Bisada residents today gave an application to the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Gautam Budh Nagar under Section 156(3) of CrPC with a request to direct the police to lodge an FIR against Akhlaq's family members," a Senior Prosecution Officer said.Section 156(3) empowers a magistrate to order an FIR and consequent investigation by the police against those named in the complaint. The court will hear the matter on June 13, he said.

"Akhlaq's family members will be given the opportunity to submit their reply and then the court will decide whether there is need for directing police to lodge FIR," he said.

At the last week's mahapanchayat, the villagers had given an ultimatum to police to file an FIR against Akhlaq's family members within 20 days, after a report of a forensic lab in Mathura concluded that the meat found in the victim's house was of "cow or its progeny".

Bisada villagers say that on Eid, two villagers saw Akhlaq and his son beat a calf after which Akhlaq confessed to killing the calf.

18:19   HC to Censor Board on Udta: Mature films needed, no need for hue and cry
The Bombay High Court hearing the plea filed by the producers of Udta Punjab against an order of the Review Committee of the Central Board of Film Certification seeking cuts in the movie has posted the hearing for tomorrow.

The High Court allowed the company to amend its petition allowing them to challenge the Censor Board's order suggesting 13 cuts in the film.

Addressing the Censor Board, the court said, "Present generations want something mature. Shouldn't have a hue and cry over this. How can you ask them to delete words like MP, MLA, Election?"

With the 'Udta Punjab' issue turning into a war between co-producer Anurag Kashyap and CBFC chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani , the producers yesterday moved the Bombay High Court seeking a copy of the order of the Censor Board Review Committee report on the film.

17:20   AI's books are so bad nobody wil buy it: Aviation minister
Air India's "books are so bad" that nobody will buy it even if the government wanted to sell off the national carrier, Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju said today.

Ruling out disinvestment in the carrier that has a debt of some Rs 50,000 crore, Raju at the same time made it plain that the taxpayers' money cannot be committed "for eternity".

"Its (Air India) books are so bad. I don't think that even if it is offered, anybody would come for it," he said.Grappling with mounting debts and tough business conditions, Air India has been in the red since the merger of then Air India and Indian Airlines in 2007 and is staying afloat on a Rs.30,000-crore bailout package extended by the UPA government.

Asserting that unlike others, he would not like to get into "Air India bashing," the minister also said that the carrier needs to function in a more cohesive manner to deliver on its turnaround goals."It is a nice airline. I like Air India but I can't commit taxpayers' money for eternity. That is not done," Raju said.

Buoyed by improving financial situation and high growth potential of the domestic aviation market, Air India is putting in plans to expand its fleet by another 100 aircraft in the next four years.

"My feeling is that the cohesiveness of the team has to increase and where they have worked as a team, they have delivered, and where they have not worked as a team, they have pulled in different sides. Nobody can put the clock back. The quicker they realise it the better," he noted.

While there has been no official announcement so far, the airline has managed to eke out an operational profit of around Rs. 6-8 crore in the previous financial year.

16:55   A pound of flesh
After the lynching, the police sent the meat recovered from outside Akhlaque's house to a forensic laboratory for testing. While preliminary veterinary reports had suggested that the meat was mutton, the forensic lab, eight months after it was sent the sample, submitted a report a week ago, certifying that the meat was beef. The response of some Bharatiya Janata Party notables who represent Uttar Pradesh in the provincial legislative assembly and in Parliament has been instructive.

16:40   Danish tourist's rape: Cops seek jail till death, sentence tomorrow
The Delhi Police today sought a jail term for entire life for five convicts in the gang-rape case of a 52-year-old Danish woman near the New Delhi railway station two years ago. A city court will pronounce its verdict on the sentence tomorrow.

Seeking maximum punishment, the prosecutor argued that the offence was committed with the foreigner in a "barbaric and inhuman manner" and "these convicts have caused a dent to the reputation of the country". "The way the crime has been committed, it demands maximum punishment of imprisonment till remainder of life prescribed under the new law for the offence of gang rape. The crime was committed with a foreigner and a message should be sent to the society that rule of law prevails in India and wrong-doers would be dealt with an iron hand," Special Public Prosecutor Atul Shrivastava argued on quantum of sentence.

The court, on June 6, has convicted Mahender alias Ganja (25), Mohd Raja (25), Raju (23), Arjun (21) and Raju Chakka (30) for the offences under sections 376 (D) (gang rape), 395 (dacoity), 366(kidnapping), 342 (wrongful confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of IPC.

The sixth accused, 56-year-old Shyam Lal had died in February this year and proceedings against him were abated. Three other accused in the case are juveniles and inquiry against them is in progress before the Juvenile Justice Board.

According to the prosecution, the five men, all vagabonds, had robbed and gang-raped the Danish tourist at knife-point on the night of January 14, 2014, after leading her to a secluded spot close to the Divisional Railway Officers' Club near the railway station.

15:50   Gulbarg massacre: Quantum of punishment tomorrow
The Ahmedabad Court today deferred the judgement till Friday on the quantum of sentence for the 24 convicts in the Gulbarg massacre case. During the hearing, the defence said that the eight witnesses have not been able to recognize the convicts and on this basis, minimum punishment should be given.

Defence lawyer Abhay Bhardawaj said that the accused should be given a chance to reform as they don't have past criminal records.

"The prosecution needs to prove if the accused will be a threat to society if they step out of jail," he added. The prosecution has sought nothing less than death sentence or jail term till death for all the convicts while the defence lawyers contested that the incident was spontaneous and there were enough provocations for it.

Out of the 66 accused, six had died during the trial. Of the 24 convicted today, 11 have been charged with murder, while 13 others have been convicted for lesser offences.

14:49   J&K Assembly witnesses uproar over Sadhvi Prachi's statement
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly today witnessed an uproar over the controversial statement of VHP leader Sadhvi Prachi, calling for a "Muslim-Free India" even as opposition members sought a condemnation from the PDP-BJP government.

The issue was raised during the Question Hour by Independent MLA Sheikh Abdul Rasheed, who asked the government to explain what she meant by her controversial "Muslim-Mukt Bharat" statement. "Is this what you mean by 'Desh Badal Raha Hai' (the nation is changing)?" Rasheed said.

He was supported by Congress members who also condemned the statement made by Sadhvi Prachi. "What is this Muslim-Mukt Bharat? Do they want to repeat Gujarat (2002 riots)?" Congress MLA G M Saroori said. Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh (BJP) said the statement has appeared in newspapers and it is not right to make such comments.

"India is a secular country where people of all faiths and communities live including the atheists. The statement (Muslim-Mukt Bharat), which appeared in the newspapers, is not right," Singh said but stopped short of condemning the VHP leader's remark.

Yesterday, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council, the Upper House, had witnessed a ruckus over the statement made by Sadhvi Prachi in Roorkee. Known for courting controversies, Sadhvi Prachi had claimed the mission of a "Congress-free India" has already been "accomplished" and it is now time to "rid the country of Muslims".

14:22   After waiting for 10 years for concrete road, Malegaon farmer starts online petition
A farmer from Malegaon taluka in the district has reached out for public support through an online petition on portal Change.org for construction of a concrete road in his village.

Anand Pagare of Sayne Budruk village has started the petition last month in support of his appeal to Nashik collector and district Zilla Parishad CEO to construct a road in the village which will facilitate children to go to school. Pagare today said that they have been demanding for a pucca road for the past 10 years now but no heed has been paid by the district administration.

"For the past 10 years, we have been running from pillar to post for a 'pucca' road. Over 100 school-going children and nearly 2000 farmers, labourers of my village and neighbouring villages are dependent on a poorly maintained kutcha road for commuting to the outside world," he said.

He said children face extreme difficulty in travelling to the nearby school, crossing the 6-km stretch of kutcha road. The petition has attracted widespread support with 500 people signing it. "Year after year, only a small portion of the road is constructed and then the work stops. Due to poor quality, it soon gets damaged, causing severe problems for villagers," added Pagare.

13:14   'Mischievous' AAP attempting to boost its chances through 'Udta Punjab': Swamy
Questioning the release timing of Shahid Kapoor-starrer 'Udta Punjab', BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Thursday alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party was making mischievous attempts to boost its chances in next year's state assembly polls courtesy the drug abuse highlighted in the flick. Swamy's remark came a day after Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) chief Pahlaj Nihalani alleged that the movie's co-producer Anurag Kashyap has taken money from Arvind Kejriwal-led party to show Punjab in bad light.

Swamy told ANI the timing of this movie is wrong because it really makes out that the Punjab Government is responsible for drug abuse in the state. "Nobody has doubts that drug is a big problem. Who says it started with Akalis? It started with the Congress. This appears to be a mischievous attempt to further the cause of the AAP. And with the AAP defending itself, that only confirms itself," Swamy said.

The BJP's Rajya Sabha MP further said there is nothing wrong if the movie is released after the Punjab elections are over. Asserting that the 2017 Punjab elections would be fought on the grounds of the rampant drug abuse in the state, the AAP had yesterday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of having the CBFC chief in his pocket and using him as a pawn to further his chances in the polls by playing politics over 'Udta Punjab'.

13:06   'India's Nuclear Liability Act undermined'
The Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace has issued a statement condemning the joint declaration issued by India and the United States during the Prime Minister's visit. It said it finds the statement shocking as it effectively celebrates the undermining of India's sovereign Nuclear Liability Act, passed by the parliament in 2010 to ensure justice to the victims in case of an accident.

"The joint statement holds India's signing of the Convention on Supplementary Compensation (CSC) as "strong foundation' for building US-imported nuclear power plants in India. The CSC is a template promoted by international nuclear lobbies, channeling the entire liability to the operator of plants and exempting the supplier companies. In case of a future nuclear accident in India, this would create a situation worse than Bhopal, whose victims continue to struggle for justice. The joint statement also reaffirms the intention to expedite the construction of six reactors to be built by Westinghouse corporation.

"The two governments, however, have not made the actual agreement between the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited and Westinghouse public as it would expose the absence of liability provisions and the exorbitant cost of this project."

The statement is signed by five people, including Lalita Ramdas, who is married to former navy chief Admiral Ramdas.

12:59   Maneka slams Javdekar over ministry's 'lust for killing animals'
Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi on Thursday lashed out at the Environment Ministry headed by Prakash Javadekar and said that she could not understand its 'lust for killing' animals.

Maneka, who is also an animal rights activist, said that the ministry was "writing letters to every state and allowing the killing of animals like elephants, wild boar and monkeys".  Her comments came after 200 nilgai were shot in Bihar in the last six days.

Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has responded saying if the state asks the ministry, it permits the culling of animals to protect crops. He said the permit to shoot the blue bulls is valid till November in 31 in Bihar's 39 districts.

Earlier, on June 1, in a social media interaction, Maneka had also called for a nationwide online protest to ban cow-slaughter. She also voiced her protest against zoos and said that "they are no longer a place of amusement for children and should be banned'.

11:52   Meet the man tasked with monitoring Indo-Pak ceasefire line
A high-ranking Swedish military official will be the new head of the United Nations mission tasked with monitoring the ceasefire line between India and Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir.

Major General Per Gustaf Lodin, 59, also a logistics expert, was appointed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as the Chief Military Observer and Head of Mission for the United Nations Military Observer Group (UNMOGIP) in India and Pakistan, the UN said.

Maj Gen Lodin succeeds Major General Delali Johnson Sakyi of Ghana, who completes his two-year assignment as Chief Military Observer and Head of Mission for the UNMOGIP on July 2.

India has maintained that UNMOGIP has outlived its utility and is irrelevant after the Simla Agreement and the consequent establishment of the Line of Control (LoC).

With a military career in the Swedish Army beginning in 1978, Major General Lodin most recently held the position of Director of Procurement and Logistics for the Swedish Armed Forces.

Previous to this, he was the Deputy Director of the National Armaments for Sweden and Deputy Chief of Staff at the Swedish Armed Forces. According to the Security Council mandate given in Resolution 307 of 1971, UNMOGIP observes and reports on ceasefire violations along and across the Line of Control and the working boundary between the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as reports developments that could lead to ceasefire violations.

His family has continued trying to get justice from the government, and to highlight the war crimes that were committed against their son and other Indian soldiers, with no success.

Their fight continues, to this day, 17 years on.

09:38   Mexican President drives Modi to dinner
In a very special gesture, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto personally drove Prime Minister Modi to Quintonil in Mexico city for a vegetarian fare.

Located in the well-heeled and leafy district of Polanco, this unprepossessing restaurant focuses on fresh seasonal ingredients, forgotten herbs and grains, and indigenous produce. Though meat is a feature on the tasting menu, Vallejo aims to highlight the value of fruit and vegetables, as much for their flavour as for their nutritional value.

08:54   India plans expanded missile export drive, with China on its mind
India has stepped up efforts to sell an advanced cruise missile system to Vietnam and has at least 15 more markets in its sights, a push experts say reflects concerns in New Delhi about China's growing military assertiveness.

Selling the supersonic BrahMos missile, made by an Indo-Russian joint venture, would mark a shift for the world's biggest arms importer, as India seeks to send weapons the other way in order to shore up partners' defences and boost revenues.

The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ordered BrahMos Aerospace, which produces the missiles, to accelerate sales to a list of five countries topped by Vietnam, according to a government note viewed by Reuters and previously unreported.

The others are Indonesia, South Africa, Chile and Brazil.

A Special Investigation Team court is likely to pronounce the quantum of sentence on Thursday for the 24 convicted in the Gulberg Society massacre in which 69 persons including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri were killed during the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The prosecution had sought nothing less than death sentence or jail term till death for all the convicts while the defence lawyers had contested it saying that the incident was spontaneous and there were enough provocations for it.

Judge PB Desai had earlier on June 2 convicted 11 persons of offences including murder, while 13 others were charged with lesser offences. The court had acquitted 36 others.
