Hillary Clinton has claimed victory in the Puerto Rico Democratic presidential primary, putting her closer to securing the number of delegates needed to win her party's White House nomination.

The candidate later tweeted that she had beaten her rival Bernie Sanders to the territory's collection of delegates. "We just won Puerto Rico! Gracias a la Isla del Encanto por esta victoria!" tweeted Clinton.

She is now less than 30 delegates short of the 2,383 needed to win the Democratic nomination for president and could reach the target when polls close in the New Jersey primary. California also votes in what is expected to be a decisive day for the former secretary of state.
