Writer Mahasweta Devi passes away

Veteran social activist and writer Mahasweta Devi passed away in Kolkata on Thursday. She was 90.

"Grandmom breathed her last at 3.16 pm today. I thank all of you for your concern and support," the writers grandson Tathagata Bhattacharya posted on Facebook.

The eminent litterateur had been in critical condition at the Belle Vue Clinic hospital in Kolkata. 

The writer-activist, who was known for her dedicated service for the welfare of tribals in different parts of India, had been suffering from kidney and lung ailments, besides blood and urinary tract infections.

The Jnanpith, Padma Vibhushan and Magsaysay awardee had been admitted in the hospital for around two months. 

Her notable works include Hajar Chaurashir Maa, Breast Stories, and Tin Korir Sadh, among many others. Several of her works have been adapted in films over the years.
