The main suspect in the Dallas police shootout, identified as 25-year-old Micah Johnson, was killed a blast caused by a robot-controlled explosive device. This may be the first of its kind killing of an attacker in US law enforcement history.

The shooting began near one of the busiest parts of the citys downtown, filled with hotels and restaurants.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown's description of what happened Thursday night was terse:

"We saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on its extension for it to detonate where the suspect was. Other options would have exposed our officers to grave danger," Brown said. "The suspect is deceased as a result of the detonating of the bomb."

The first "bomb robot" was developed in the early 1970s to deal with car bombs in Northern Ireland, cobbled together by retired British Army Lieutenant-Colonel 'Peter' Miller using a motorized wheelbarrow.
