Stay silent or get shot at El Chapo's birthplace

It's the kind of place where everybody abides by a code of silence. If you say too much in Badiraguato, you may lose your life. Your family may be shot and killed.

This much is clear: If you stay silent, don't ask too many questions and mind your own business, you should be OK.

It's the birthplace of drug lord Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman, so perhaps it's no surprise that the 3,700 people of this town in the mountains of the northern state of Sinaloa have kept their lips tight.

Mexican media reported 15 homicides in and around Badiraguato last month. An additional seven people were killed in November. Five men were ambushed, shot and killed in June.
