IAF officer death: Bail pleas of two accused rejected

The bail pleas of Sonu and Johnny, two accused in the hit-and-run case which claimed the life of a young Air Force officer in Kolkata, were rejected today by a city court which sent them to police custody till January 30.

Dismissing their bail petition, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Bankshal Court, Sanjay Ranjan Pal remanded them to police custody for 12 days.

The police remand of prime accused Sambia Sohrab, who was allegedly at the wheels of the brand new white Audi that mowed down Corporal Abhimanyu Goud on January 13, is also till the same date. Sonu alias Shanawaz Khan was arrested yesterday by Kolkata Police with support from Delhi Police from his maternal uncle's house in Delhi's Ajmeri Gate area. He was brought to the city on transit remand last night.

Johnny, who was not traceable since the incident, was arrested this morning from a house in Ekbalpore area by city police sleuths. Sambia, a son of former RJD MLA Mohammed Sohrab, has been booked under IPC sections 120(B) (criminal conspiracy), 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence), 212 (harbouring offender) and 427 (mischief causing damage).

He was produced at the court on January 17. 21-year-old Gaud was mowed down by the car which broke through gaurd rails on Red Road in the morning of January 13 during rehearsals of the Republic Day parade.
