22:10   India should hold talks with Pak after JeM chief's arrest: Sena
Shiv Sena today said that India should hold talks with Pakistan only after the arrest and handing over of Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Maulana Masood Azhar by Islamabad to New Delhi for his terror acts.

Party leader Sanjay Raut said that it has been the 'consistent' position of the Sena that Masood Azhar should be first handed over to India to make the atmosphere conducive for talks between the two countries.

"It is the usual game being played by Pakistan of detaining some people, arresting them and then releasing them and later letting them off. It had also happened after the 26/11 Mumbai terror strikes," he said.

20:15   Odd-even succeeded as people found it appealing, says Delhi HC
The Delhi high court today said the odd-even scheme of the Aam Aadmi Party government was a success to some extent as the idea had appealed to the people and not because of the Rs 2,000 fine imposed for violations.

A bench of justices Badar Durrez Ahmed and Sanjeev Sachdeva said that while the decrease in pollution levels due to the scheme might have been marginal, but it had some 'good side-effects' like reduction in congestion on roads and people's participation.

It made the observation in response to the submission of Delhi Traffic Police that the scheme was successful mainly due to the fine payable for violation.

The traffic police made the submission while defending itself against the court's assertion that its officers do not take action against violators, especially those who jump carriageways and move into oncoming lanes to get ahead during jams. Such conduct makes the traffic situation worse, the bench said.

Justice Ahmed also said he and his family missed out on a movie after they were stuck in a jam and reached the theatre three hours after leaving home when usually the journey would have taken them only 40 minutes.

DCP Romil Baaniya (Traffic HQ) said small fines of Rs 100 are not a deterrent so despite the large number of challans it has issued against violators, such violations continue.

He said there was a need to re-work the fines that can be imposed for traffic violations and sought directions from the court to the Centre in this regard.

The bench, however, refused to pass any such order.

19:58   Court allows CBI to question Indrani, others afresh
A local court in Mumbai on Thursday allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation to question afresh Indrani Mukerjea and two other arrested accused in the Sheena Bora murder case.

"We want to question Indrani, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and her driver Shyam Rai in jail," said a CBI official.

Judge H S Mahajan of the special court for the CBI cases granted the agency's plea.

The Esplanade magistrate's court, however, directed the CBI to produce the order of the sessions court (special CBI court) for obtaining a similar order for Peter Mukerjea, Indrani's husband, who was arrested later in the case.

The CBI in its plea said the facts disclosed by Indrani and two others needed to be 'checked and verified' with Peter.

"The magistrate's court reserved its order (on questioning Peter) till tomorrow," said Peter's lawyer Kushal Mor.

The CBI has not yet filedcharge sheet against Peter, so his case has not been transferred to the special CBI court.

18:40   Worst isn't over yet. Sensex may bottom out
Stating that the economy is losing momentum, brokerage firm Ambit Capital today said the benchmark Sensex is yet to bottom out and can fall to 22,000 level in the "foreseeable future".

Weak corporate earnings as well as low investments by foreign investors into India-focused funds could bring down the Sensex in the near term, its Chief Executive for Institutional Equities Saurabh Mukherjea said.

"There is a high probability that we will see the Sensex at 22,000 level in the foreseeable future," he said. The Sensex, which began the year at 26,160.90 level, has shed nearly 1,400 points or over 5 per cent following renewed worries over the health of Chinese economy, which forced both the World Bank and IMF to lower their global growth outlooks.

The market has fallen even below the levels when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was sworn in on May 26, 2014 and closed 2015 with a 5 per cent loss, a first in the past four years.

18:17   British actor Alan Rickman, who played Snape, passes away at 69
Alan Rickman, one of the best-loved and most warmly admired British actors of the past 30 years, has died in London aged 69. His death was confirmed on Thursday by his family.

Rickman had been suffering from cancer, reports the Guardian.

A star whose arch features and languid diction were recognisable across the generations, Rickman found a fresh legion of fans with his role as Professor Snape in the Harry Potter films.

But the actor had been a big-screen staple since first shooting to global acclaim in 1988, when he starred as Hans Gruber, Bruce Willis's sardonic, dastardly adversary in Die Hard -- a part he was offered two days after arriving in Los Angeles, aged 41.

16:37   Pak court rejects plea to examine boat used by 26/11 attackers
While the MEA holds a briefing saying India is upbeat about Pakistan sending a SIT to probe the Pathankot attack, the Pakistani anti-terrorism court hearing the 2008 Mumbai attack case has rejected the prosecutions plea to form a commission to examine the boat used by the 10 LeT terrorists to reach the Indian coast.

The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Islamabad which held the hearing at the Adiala Jail Rawalpindi yesterday dismissed the plea of the prosecution seeking formation of a commission to examine the boat Al-Fauz used by alleged terrorists of Mumbai attacks, a court official said.

On its last hearing on January 6, the court had reserved the verdict after hearing the arguments of the prosecution and defence lawyers over the matter.

The court also summoned four witnesses for next hearing on January 20, the official said. The prosecution had filed the application seeking formation of a commission to examine the boat Al-Fauz used by alleged terrorists of Mumbai attacks so that the vessel could be made case property.

Al-Fauz is in the custody of the Pakistani authorities in the port city of Karachi, from where the 10 militants, armed with AK-47 assault rifles and hand grenades, had left for India to carry out the Mumbai attack in 2008. According to the Federal Investigation Agency, the alleged attackers used three boats including Al Fauz to reach Mumbai from Karachi.

14:00   David Bowie cremated quietly in New York
British music legend David Bowie has reportedly been secretly cremated in New York without any of his family or friends present. The musician, who died at the age of 69 after losing his 18 month battle with cancer, had apparently told his family that he wanted to "go without any fuss" and they honoured his wish, reported the Daily Mirror quoting a source.

The singer had also kept his fight with cancer a secret from fans and had told his family to not have a funeral or public memorial.

"There is no public or private service or a public memorial. There is nothing," the source added.

There has been an outpouring of tributes from fans since Bowie's death on Sunday which came as a shock to many as the singer had just released his music album 'Blackstar' on his birthday, just two days before his death.

However, it seems unlikely that there would be a funeral as his body was quietly cremated shortly after he died.

12:52   Does India need a new Parliament building?
Like many of my fellow citizens, I am alarmed at the proposal of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha for building a new Parliament House. This is an idea that had been raised earlier. In 2008, the then Speaker of the Lok Sabha, had mooted a similar proposal but, thankfully, it did not find many takers and faded away. The danger, this time, is that even though major political parties have differences about important national issues, there seems to be a silent consensus among these parties regarding the need for a new Parliament building, with some notable exceptions.

The suicide attacker who detonated a bomb that killed 10 German tourists in the heart of Istanbul's historic district had registered as a refugee just
a week earlier, Turkish officials have said Wednesday, raising questions over whether extremists are posing as asylum-seekers to inflame anti-immigrant sentiment in Europe.

Turkish authorities identified the assailant in Tuesday's attack as a Syrian man who was born in 1988, and said he was affiliated with the Islamic State group. Turkish media, including some close to the government, identified him as Nabil Fadli and said he was Saudi-born. The extremist group has not so far claimed the attack.

03:58   Shipwreck from 1800s found during search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370
For nearly two years, boats dragging high-tech detection devices across the Indian Ocean have failed to solve the mystery of the whereabouts of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.

But in December one boat raked up a different one -- a shipwreck some 200 years old at the bottom of the sea.

"An anomalous sonar contact was identified in the course of the underwater search, with analysis suggesting the object was likely to be man-made, probably a shipwreck," said the Joint Agency Coordination Centre, the Australian agency directing the search for MH370, the Boeing 777 that mysteriously disappeared in March 2014 en route from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing.

03:27   Teen charged in France over Jewish teacher attack
A French judge has handed preliminary charges of "attempted assassination linked to a terrorist organisation" to a machete-wielding teen who attacked a Jewish teacher.
The anti-terrorism section of the prosecutor's office in the French capital announced the charges yesterday evening, two days after the attack in Marseille that shocked the country.
A leading Jewish authority in the southern French city asked fellow Jews on Tuesday to refrain from wearing their traditional skull cap to stay safe after the incident.

France is still reeling from a series of attacks in Paris on November 13 that killed 130 people and just marked the anniversary of attacks on the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and a kosher grocery store which killed 17 people. In each case, the Islamic State group claimed responsibility.

01:42   3 students into custody in connection to Pathankot attack
Three students were today taken into custody in Pakistan in connection with the Pathankot attack after India provided cell phone numbers of the suspects, bringing the total number of the arrests in the case to 31.

"The agencies have picked up Usman Sarwar, a Lahore University of Management Sciences student, a Sahiwal district institution student Saad Mughal and Kashif Jan of Karachi University," Pakistani media reported today.

The intelligence agencies reportedly picked up the three students on the cell phone numbers provided by the Indian authorities.
Earlier, the Pakistani authorities had dismissed that the cell phone numbers from whom the calls were allegedly made from Pakistan were "unregistered".

"The agencies are investigating the alleged links of the three students with Jaish-e-Muhammad," an official said.

US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone today, discussing crises in Ukraine and Syria, the White House said.

"They spent a significant portion of their time discussing the need for the Russians to live up to the commitments that they made in Minsk -- to end their support for separatists that are destabilizing Ukraine right now," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest.

Ukraine and pro-Russian rebels agreed a new truce deal Wednesday that goes into immediate effect and replaces one broken just hours after its signature at the end of last month.

00:29   Sikh bus driver in Los Angeles assaulted, branded terrorist
A Sikh bus driver in Los Angeles was brutally assaulted and called a terrorist and a suicide bomber, the victim's representatives said today over two months after the incident was reported to the police.

The Sikh Coalition group, is representing the victim Balwinder Jit Singh, who worked as a bus driver for 17 years.

While he was being beaten by a passenger on November 6, Singh kept his foot on the brake of his bus to ensure the safety of the pedestrians and passengers.

The assault left Singh in the hospital with a black eye, swollen and bruised face and jaw, and infection in his eye.

"Two months later, he continues to suffer from blurred vision and pain," the Sikh Coalition said.

Singh, who is on the board of a recently-vandalised Gurdwara in Buena Park, has retained the Sikh Coalition to represent him in this ongoing criminal investigation.

Although he immediately reported the incident to the police, he delayed going public because he didn't know how to do so until he contacted the Sikh Coalition.
