An explosion rocked a central square in Istanbul on Tuesday, Turkey's semi-official Anadolu news agency reported.

The Independent says there were reports of a number of people injured in Sultanahmet Square, close to the major tourist attractions of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud blast and video footage on the CNN Turk channel showed police and ambulances at the scene.

Casualties were reported, but no further details were immediately available. News reports showed Turkish security forces clearing the area.

The picture tweeted by Haidar Sumeri @IraqiSecurity shows people, probably injured, lying on the road.
