Rajnath tasked to oversee quake-hit north-east

A powerful earthquake struck the north-east before dawn today, killing at least five people and injuring nearly 40, though the toll was expected to rise, with rescue efforts hampered by severed power supplies and telecommunication links.

The US Geological Survey said the quake of magnitude 6.8 was 57 kilometres (35 miles) deep and struck 29 kilometres (18 miles) west of Imphal, the capital of Manipur on the border with Myanmar.

The PM has asked the home minister, who is in Assam, to oversee the situation.
